We describe the case of a 19-year-old woman with no significant medical history who developed progressive right-sided neck pain and palpitations one month following a pregnancy complicated by preeclampsia. Family history was significant for unprovoked deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) in her father at age 44. Systemic examination revealed mild swelling of the right upper extremity with pain on palpation. Computed tomography (CT) of the thorax with contrast demonstrated extensive occlusion of right upper extremity veins and collateralization of chest wall veins. Pulmonary e

Background: The causative agent of the new coronavirus infection SARS-CoV-2 has unique properties causing hyperinflammatory syndrome and cytokine storm, as well as widespread endotheliitis and thrombotic microangiopathy, initially detected in the lungs of adult patients who died from a severe form of the disease. Venous and arterial thrombosis in adults were identified as common causes of severe complications and deaths in new coronavirus infections. There are very few reports of thrombotic events in children with COVID-19 in the literature. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of th

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to share our experience with the arm-only combined transarterial and transvenous access approach for neurointerventional procedures and evaluate its efficacy and safety.
METHODS: The arm-only combined transarterial and transvenous access approach was performed using the right/bilateral proximal radial arteries and the right forearm superficial vein system, guided by ultrasonic guidance. Arterial access closure was achieved using a transradial band radial compression device, while manual compression was utilized for venous approach closure.
RESULTS: Thirteen procedu

Fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) is an arteriopathy of medium-sized vessels causing pathological arterial wall fragility. However, only minimal data exist on evaluating the risk of transradial access (TRA) in these patients. We describe the case of a woman in her 70s who underwent left middle meningeal artery embolisation for an acute-on-chronic subdural haematoma via right TRA. Radial angiography demonstrated significant FMD throughout the entire right upper extremity. To prevent radial spasm, a 23 cm sheath was placed without difficulty. However, follow-up angiography demonstrated the presence

Thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) is a condition that results from the compression of neurovascular structures as they exit the thorax. Arterial ischemic stroke can occur in TOS due to retrograde embolism from the subclavian artery. We describe a 15-year-old girl who presented with left hemiplegia after 2 weeks of right arm numbness and tingling. Imaging showed an acute ischemic stroke due to a right middle cerebral artery occlusion. She was treated with intravenous tissue plasminogen activator at 1.3 h and mechanical thrombectomy at 2.4 h with successful recanalization. Review of her neck comput

BACKGROUND: Acute upper limb ischemia in a patient with thoracic outlet syndrome is a rare but serious clinical disorder. If the disease is not treated promptly due to underdiagnosis, it could lead to distal artery embolization and limb-threatening ischemia. Revascularizing upper extremity arteries in a timely manner could rescue ischemic limbs and improve the patient's quality of life. We reported here a case of a patient who presented with bilateral upper limb ischemia caused by arterial thoracic outlet syndrome.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 63-year-old woman who presented with sudden bilateral upp

Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) is a hyperinflammatory response observed in children several weeks to months after acute infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2). On review of all published cases of thromboembolism (TE) as a complication of MIS-C, 33 cases of TE were found with incidence ranging from 1.4 to 6.5%. TE occurred mostly in children aged 12 years and above. One-third of the cases were cerebral infarcts and the remaining cases included intracardiac and radial arterial thromboses, upper and lower extremity deep vein thrombosis,

INTRODUCTION: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a serious postoperative complication with potentially fatal outcome. However, asymptomatic VTE is difficult to diagnose and is often discovered by chance. We report a case of suspected VTE diagnosed based on prolonged fever after surgery and discuss the literature.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 48-year-old man was referred to us with a diagnosis of gastric cancer. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed a neoplastic lesion from the anterior wall of the mid-gastric mass to the upper part of the gastric body, and biopsy revealed adenocarcinoma. Contrast

BACKGROUND: Several coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19)-associated complications are being increasingly reported, including arterial and venous thrombo-embolic events that may lead to amputation of the affected limbs. So far, acute upper limb ischaemia (ULI) has been reported only in critically ill patients.
CASE SUMMARY: Herein, we aimed to present a case of a 29-year-old, otherwise healthy male volleyball player, with acute ischaemic signs in the upper extremity who was diagnosed with COVID-19 1 month before the ischaemic event. It has been shown that volleyball players experience repetitive

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 was initially identified as an acute respiratory disease, but it was quickly recognized that multiple organ systems could be affected. Venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism have been well reported. However, there is a paucity of data on COVID-19-related arterial thrombosis. We examined the incidence, characteristics, treatment, and outcome in patients with acute COVID-19-related arterial thrombosis in a large health maintenance organization (HMO).
METHODS: A retrospective multicenter case review was performed from March 2020 to March 2021. Cases were identified through

Venous thromboembolism includes deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism and is the most common cardiovascular disease after coronary artery disease and stroke. Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is an autoimmune disorder that is characterized by venous or arterial thrombosis with laboratory evidence of antiphospholipid antibodies. Long-term anticoagulation therapy is required to prevent recurrent DVTs, embolisms, and thrombosis-related complications. Treatment options include vitamin K antagonists, subcutaneous low-molecular-weight heparin, unfractionated heparin, or direct oral antic

COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by SARS-CoV-2. This enveloped RNA coronavirus primarily has tropism for the respiratory tract. However, it has also been shown to have various extrapulmonary manifestations such as pulmonary embolism, ischemic strokes, deep venous thrombosis, or arterial thrombosis. We present a case of a 34-year-old woman who had severe COVID-19 infection with no respiratory symptoms and developed strokes in multiple vascular territories and digital ischemia due to thrombosis formation in the brachial circulation of her arm despite receiving therapeutic anticoagulation

Upper extremity digital ischaemia (UEDI) is a rare heterogeneous condition whose frequency is 40 times less than that of toe ischaemia. Using a large cohort, the aim of this study was to evaluate aetiologies, prognosis and midterm clinical outcomes of UEDI.All patients with UEDI with or without cutaneous necrosis in a university hospital setting between January 2000 to December 2016 were included. Aetiologies, recurrence of UEDI, digital amputation and survival were analyzed retrospectively.Three hundred twenty three patients were included. UEDI due to cardio-embolic disease (DICE) was the hig

BACKGROUND A left atrial septal pouch (LASP) was first described in 2010 as a new anatomical entity with potential for embolic events. The prevalences of left, right, and double septal pouches are 40.8%, 5.1%, and 3.7%, respectively. There is a concern about the risk of embolic events due to formation of thrombi in a LASP (especially stroke). CASE REPORT A 60-year-old man presented with sudden onset of right arm pain associated with sweating and neck pain radiating to his left upper extremity. On physical examination, his right arm was cyanotic and he had pain, paresthesia, and no radial pulse

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine the safety, efficacy, and applicability of percutaneous axillary artery (pAxA) access in patients requiring upper extremity large sheath access during complex aortic, cardiac, and peripheral endovascular procedures. We also take this opportunity to address the potential cost-benefits offered by pAxA access compared to open upper extremity access.
METHODS: A total of 26 consecutive patients, between June 2018 and October 2020, underwent endovascular intervention, requiring upper extremity access (UEA). Ultrasound-guided, percutaneous access of

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Fibrocartilaginous embolism is a rare cause of ischemic myelopathy. Authors report a case of a 39-year-old woman with progressive tetraparesis and severe autonomic dysfunction. Despite of the detailed examinations, the definite diagnosis was verified by autopsy.
METHODS: The patient was admitted because of progressive pain and numbness of the upper extremities and tetraparesis. Hypotonic muscles of the lower extremities with mild tetraparesis were observed. Magnetic resonance imaging showed an intramedullary lesion at the level of the cervical V-VII vertebral. Patient'

We report the case of a 41-year-old female who presented with left upper limb embolization due to primary thoracic aortic mural thrombus; this latter represented an uncommon condition with difficult diagnosis and a high rate of life-threatening complications. Upper extremities embolization is extremely rare because it usually occurs in the lower limbs. Management strategy is still controversial, and no clear guidelines indicate superiority of either conservative or invasive treatment approach to date. Our report illustrates how endovascular exclusion of thoracic aortic mural thrombus has the a

Most cases of Clostridium difficile infection are hospital acquired; but in recent times, the incidence of community-acquired infections has increased. Patients with Clostridium difficile infections are at an increased risk for thrombosis. We report a case of an 82-year-old female who was admitted to the intensive care unit for acute hypoxic respiratory failure and septic shock. She was found to have Clostridium difficile infection at presentation. During the hospitalization, we discovered bilateral lower extremity venous thromboembolism, bilateral pulmonary embolism, multifocal thromboembolic
