Iliac vein stent migration with extensive cardiac damage in a patient with May-Thurner syndrome.

In May-Thurner syndrome, or iliac vein compression syndrome, the left common iliac vein is compressed between the right common iliac artery and corresponding vertebral body, increasing patient risk for deep vein thrombosis. Iliac vein stenting for patients with symptomatic May-Thurner syndrome has become standard practice in many centers. This article describes a patient whose stent embolized completely to the right ventricle, destroying most structures in its path.

Orbital atherectomy for treating calcified iliac artery disease to enable large bore device delivery: A case series report.

The current standard of care for the treatment of flow-limiting calcific iliac artery disease is balloon angioplasty and subsequent stent placement. However, the presence of calcified lesions may prevent adequate stent expansion or impede the delivery of large bore devices, such as those for transcatheter aortic valve replacement or endovascular aneurysm repair implants. Plaque modification through vessel preparation with orbital atherectomy may enable stent expansion and subsequent proper large device delivery with low rates of procedural complications. A retrospective, single center, case se

Acute aortoiliac occlusion in a patient with novel coronavirus disease-2019.

The severe acute respiratory syndrome novel coronavirus-2 pandemic is affecting almost every country in the world. Even if the major symptoms of coronavirus disease-2019 are respiratory, different symptoms at presentation are now recognized. Venous thromboembolism has been reported in infected patients and few but increasing cases of arterial thrombosis have been described. We report a case of acute aortoiliac and lower limb artery occlusions in a patient presenting with severe coronavirus disease-2019 infection. The mechanism of the occlusion seemed to be distal embolization from a floating t

A Case of May-Thurner Syndrome.

May-Thurner syndrome, which is also known as iliac vein compression syndrome, is caused when an anatomical variant of the left common iliac vein with a lateral or anterior spur is compressed by the right iliac artery, resulting in thrombosis of the vein. It can present as left deep vein thrombosis which can lead to pulmonary embolism or chronic changes of venous insufficiency in the left lower limb. We report a 27-year-old female with pain abdomen, who was diagnosed to have May-Thurner syndrome.

Extraspinal Vascular Malformation with Retrograde Drainage through a Radicular Vein: Treatment with Percutaneous Transgluteal Embolization.

BACKGROUND: Spinal arteriovenous fistulas have abnormal connections between spinal arteries and veins. Early diagnosis and management are essential for preventing permanent neurologic deficits. Although symptoms of myelopathy are commonly related to established types of spinal arteriovenous fistulas within the spine, extraspinal arteriovenous anomalies may also result in similar pathology and pose challenges to conventional endovascular treatment. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 61-year-old man presented with progressive weakness and decreasing sensation in the lower extremities. He had a remote history

Assessing potential for aortoiliac vascular injury from venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation cannulae: An in vitro particle image velocimetry study.

Limb ischemia is a major complication associated with peripheral venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO). The high velocity jet from arterial cannulae can cause "sandblasting" injuries to the arterial endothelium, with the potential risk of distal embolization and end organ damage. The aim of this study was to identify, for a range of clinically relevant VA-ECMO cannulae and flow rates, any regions of peak flow velocity on the aortic wall which may predispose to vascular injury, and any regions of low-velocity flow which may predispose to thrombus formation. A silicone model

Delayed manifestation of COVID-19 presenting as lower extremity multilevel arterial thrombosis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Venous thrombo-embolic events have been described in hospitalized patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), suggesting the presence of coagulopathy induced by the viral infection. To date, only rare cases of arterial thrombosis related to COVID-19 have been reported. CASE SUMMARY: A 54-year-old patient with an influenza-like illness 15 days earlier, which resolved, and no known cardiovascular risk factor presented with acute right lower limb ischaemia. A computed tomography angiogram of the abdominal aorta and lower extremities showed, in the absence of vascular disease,

An Enigmatic Case of an Uncommon Syndrome: The Hughes-Stovin Syndrome.

Hughes-Stovin syndrome is a disorder characterized by deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary artery aneurysms with potentially life-threatening complications. The case of a 22-year-old Moroccan male patient, presenting with signs of sepsis of unclear etiology, is presented here. Computed tomography (CT) scan revealed thrombosis of the inferior vena cava up to the hepatic veins, thrombosis of both common iliac veins and a thrombus in the right atrium. Primarily suspecting septic thrombosis, surgical thrombectomy was performed. The patient recovered uneventfully and was discharged with oral anticoag

May-Thurner syndrome - Are we aware enough?

Iliac vein compression syndrome (May-Thurner syndrome - MTS) is an anatomically variable clinical condition in which the left common iliac vein is compressed between the right common iliac artery and the underlying spine. This anatomic variant results in an increased incidence of left iliac or iliofemoral vein thrombosis. It predominantly affects young women in the second or third decades of life with preponderance during pregnancy or oral contraceptive use. Although MTS is rare, its true prevalence is underestimated but it can be a life-threatening condition due to development of pulmonary em

A case of Hughes-Stovin syndrome (incomplete Behçet's disease) with extensive arterial involvement : Unmasking the true face of a rare syndrome.

Hughes-Stovin syndrome (HSS), characterized by the combination of multiple pulmonary artery aneurysms and deep vein thrombosis, is a rare and an under-recognized clinical entity with less than 40 published cases in English medical literature. Vascular venous thrombotic events, as occurring in the course of Behçet's disease (BD), are also described in HSS, e. g., vena cava, intra-cardiac, jugular vein, iliac vein, femoral vein, and dural sinus thrombosis. We describe a 35-year-old man with HSS showing classical features of the syndrome in the form of recurrent thrombophlebitis of the lower limb
