Single-Session Curative Transarterial Onyx Embolization of a Convexity Dural AVF with a Concomitant Pial AVF Sharing the Vein of Labbé: A Case Report and Literature Review.

OBJECTIVE: Pial arteriovenous fistula (PAVF) is a relatively rare and most commonly congenital intracranial arteriovenous shunt. We describe a presumed acquired PAVF coexisting with a convexity dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF) that shares a common draining vein and discuss the potential pathophysiological mechanisms with reference to the literature. CASE PRESENTATION: A 68-year-old man presented with slowed thought. Imaging demonstrated a convexity DAVF supplied by branches of the right external carotid artery and draining into the dorsal segment of the right vein of Labbé, as well as a PAV

Photon-Counting Detector vs Energy-Integrating Detector CT Myelography for Detecting CSF-Venous Fistulas in Spontaneous Intracranial Hypotension: Substantially Lower Radiation Dose.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Photon-counting detector CT (PCD-CT) offers improved spatial resolution compared with conventional energy-integrating detector CT (EID-CT), but session-level dose comparisons in multiacquisition CT myelography (CTM) are limited. We compared radiation dose between PCD-CTM and EID-CTM for detecting CSF-venous fistulas (CVFs) in patients with spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective, single-center cohort study included 603 CTM examinations (EID-CTM, n=470; PCD-CTM, n=133) performed for SIH evaluation between 2020 and 2025. The

Efficacy of four exercise modalities on body composition in overweight and obese university students: a network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: The rising prevalence of overweight and obesity among university students constitutes a pressing public health concern; however, the differential effectiveness of various exercise interventions on body composition remains insufficiently characterized. METHODS: This network meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effects of four exercise modalities-high-intensity interval training (HIIT), resistance exercise (RE), aerobic exercise (AE), and combined aerobic-resistance exercise (AE+RE)-on adiposity-related outcomes in overweight and obese university students. The primary outcomes assess

Resolution of a femoral arteriovenous fistula secondary to chronic Iliac vein occlusion after stenting: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Acquired femoral arteriovenous fistula (FAVF) secondary to chronic iliac vein occlusion is rare and often underdiagnosed. The optimal management remains controversial. CASE PRESENTATION: An 80-year-old woman presented with progressive left lower extremity swelling for two months. Imaging revealed chronic left iliac vein occlusion and an incidental femoral arteriovenous fistula, presumed to be secondary to venous hypertension. The patient underwent endovascular recanalization via the contralateral femoral artery and ipsilateral popliteal vein access, with placement of two self-expan

Large renal arteriovenous fistula treated by embolization: 2 case reports.

Renal arteriovenous fistula (RAVF) is an infrequent vascular anomaly characterized by an aberrant connection between the renal artery and vein, potentially leading to significant clinical consequences. This condition may be congenital, acquired, or idiopathic and can manifest with symptoms such as hypertension, cardiac strain, renal impairment, or hematuria. Diagnostic imaging, including digital subtraction angiography (DSA) as the definitive standard, alongside noninvasive modalities like Doppler ultrasound and computed tomography (CT), plays a critical role in identifying and planning treatm

Nonlinear Microscopy of ECM Remodeling in Renal and Vascular Tissues: A Systematic Review Integrating Human AVF Imaging.

Background and Objectives: Extracellular matrix (ECM) and collagen remodeling contribute to chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression and vascular access dysfunction. Conventional histological techniques rely on staining and provide limited sensitivity for detecting early or subtle ECM alterations. Nonlinear optical imaging modalities, including second-harmonic generation (SHG), third-harmonic generation (THG), and multiphoton fluorescence (MPF) microscopy, enable label-free, high-resolution visualization of fibrillar collagen and may offer additional structural information. This study aimed to

Acquired Uterine Arteriovenous Fistulas After First-Trimester Pregnancy Loss: A Narrative Review with Case-Based Insights into Minimally Invasive Management.

Background and Objectives: Uterine arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) and arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are rare but potentially life-threatening vascular anomalies that most commonly develop after pregnancy-related uterine trauma, such as curettage or surgical evacuation. The widespread use of color Doppler ultrasonography has led to increased recognition of these lesions and a shift from hysterectomy toward fertility-preserving, minimally invasive management. This narrative review summarizes current evidence on acquired uterine AVF/AVM after early pregnancy loss, with particular emphasis on

Multimodality image fusion guidance in the microcatheter navigation to cerebrospinal arteriovenous fistula: Report of the two cases.

BACKGROUND: Neuroendovascular treatments, particularly transvenous embolization, require precise visualization of the approach route during microcatheter navigation. However, conventional roadmaps often face limitations, such as contrast medium dilution and slow venous flow. The multimodal image fusion guidance system integrates pre-acquired imaging datasets, such as computed tomography venography, with real-time fluoroscopy to enhance the visualization of the vascular anatomy and procedural accuracy. This report highlights the efficacy of this system in navigating microcatheters to complex ar

Attenuation of Ascites Following Surgical Ligation of a Congenital Caudal Mesenteric Arteriovenous Fistula in a Dog.

A 1-year-and-9-month-old intact female Pembroke Welsh Corgi (10.5 kg) was referred for abdominal distension, intermittent diarrhea, and ascites. Abdominocentesis yielded 1200 mL of transudate (specific gravity, 1.008). Serum biochemistry showed hyperammonemia (NH3, 163 μg/dL), increased bile acids, and mild hypoalbuminemia. Abdominal ultrasonography suggested a vascular anomaly, and contrast-enhanced computed tomographic angiography confirmed an arteriovenous communication between the caudal mesenteric artery and vein with marked venous dilation and multiple acquired portosystemic shunts, cons

Balloon Anchor Technique to Aid Closure of Coronary Fistula Using Vascular Plug.

Coronary arteriovenous fistulas (CAFs) are abnormal communications between coronary arteries and cardiac chambers or great vessels.1 They are usually congenital but may be acquired after trauma, surgery, or percutaneous procedures. Although often incidental in childhood, hemodynamically significant CAFs in adults can cause myocardial ischemia, arrhythmia, heart failure, or endarteritis.2 Evidence to guide management is limited, and multidisciplinary evaluation at centers experienced in both percutaneous and surgical approaches is recommended.3 A 60-year-old man with hypertension and prior left

Severe Anemia as a Rare Complication of Traumatic Scalp Arteriovenous Fistula: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Acquired arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) of the scalp are uncommon, usually asymptomatic, and often of cosmetic concern. In rare cases, they can lead to severe anemia due to recurrent and chronic blood loss from fragile, malformed vessels in high-flow arterial and venous connections. This report describes the case of a 38-year-old woman with a traumatic AVF of the scalp presenting with severe chronic anemia. CASE REPORT A 38-year-old woman with a history of domestic violence was admitted to the Emergency Department (ED) with severe anemia (hemoglobin 3.7 g/dL; reference range 12-16 g/

Enhanced myometrial vascularity: what, where and when to treat.

Enhanced myometrial vascularity (EMV) is defined as focal myometrial hypervascularity at the former placental implantation site identified after a recent pregnancy. Spectral Doppler imaging shows characteristic high velocity, low resistance flow. Proposed mechanisms underlying prolonged EMV include delayed involution of remodeled uterine arteries and persistent trophoblastic activity with associated neoangiogenesis. EMV may reflect normal involution or subinvolution of the placental site or may be associated with retained products of conception. While often self-limited in asymptomatic patient

Comparison of Resistive Index and Volume Flow in Ultrasound of Arteriovenous Fistula for Dialysis Access.

INTRODUCTION: Despite extensive investigation, the optimal method of assessing arteriovenous fistula (AV fistula) function remains elusive. Ultrasound is an important tool in the assessment of AV fistula, with a wide range of protocols and flow criteria used across the literature. However, the operator dependency of ultrasound has the potential to impact the quality of the acquired measurements, particularly volume flow, and has been poorly reported. Therefore, incorporating other measurements such as resistive indices may increase the robustness of the ultrasound findings. METHODS: This retr

Restoration of hepatopetal portal flow in a cat with left hepatic arteriovenous malformation following left hepatic division resection and staged attenuation of acquired portosystemic shunts.

A 5-month-old Munchkin cat was referred for hematuria. Computed tomographic angiography revealed hepatic arteriovenous malformation (HAVM) within the left lateral liver lobe and multiple acquired portosystemic shunts (APSSs), in addition to a bladder calculus. Following medical management, the cat underwent attenuation of arterioportal communications. Because ligation of the left hepatic artery did not normalize portal pressure, the left hepatic division was resected. Surgical ligation of a subset of the APSSs was performed 1 month later. Postoperatively, clinical signs improved, hepatopetal p

Endovascular Treatment of an Iatrogenic Inferior Mesenteric Arteriovenous Fistula Presenting as Massive Lower Gastrointestinal Hemorrhage: A Case Report.

Inferior mesenteric artery arteriovenous fistulae are rare, acquired connections between arterial and venous systems associated with a range of symptoms, from abdominal pain to life-threatening lower gastrointestinal hemorrhage. We report an iatrogenic inferior mesenteric artery arteriovenous fistula in a 30-year-old female, presenting with massive hematochezia 1 month after a left hemicolectomy. Angiography demonstrated a high-flow vascular connection between the inferior mesenteric artery and rectal veins, which was treated with n-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate mixed with ethiodized oil for arteriove

Blunt Splenic Injury in Hemophilia A: Embolic Agent Selection When Hemostasis Cannot be Assumed.

Blunt splenic injury in a patient with hemophilia A presents a dilemma that has traditionally been settled by splenectomy. Removing the spleen leaves a patient already prone to bleeding without its immune function, and the factor VIII (FVIII) exposure that open surgery requires is itself a recognized trigger for inhibitor formation. In the general trauma population, nonoperative management is now the standard for hemodynamically stable patients: observation suffices in most, and splenic artery embolization is reserved for higher-risk injuries. Patients with inherited coagulopathy, however, sit

Kienböck's disease on forearm DXA in a hemodialysis patient with a stented arteriovenous fistula: A case report.

Forearm dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is frequently employed for fracture risk assessment in patients with certain chronic conditions such as end-stage renal disease (ESRD), in whom the lumbar spine and hip measurements may be confounded. We report a case of a 72-year-old postmenopausal woman with ESRD maintained on hemodialysis through a stented left forearm arteriovenous fistula (AVF) and type 2 diabetes mellitus, referred for forearm DXA. Bone mineral density measurement of the access-bearing left forearm yielded a T-score of -4.8, consistent with osteoporosis. The acquired image i
