Vascular malformations of the spinal cord are a rare and complex clinical entity and can lead to severe morbidity with progressive spinal cord symptoms if not treated properly. In early stages the disease is characterized by slowly progressive, nonspecific symptoms, such as gait disturbance, paresthesia, diffuse sensory symptoms and radicular pain. In the late stages, bowel and bladder incontinence, erectile dysfunction, and urinary retention may develop. In recent decades the understanding and treatment of spinal vascular malformations have improved with the evolution of diagnostic tools and

This study describes the design and validation of an experimental setup for testing photoplethysmographic (PPG) devices intended for the non-invasive monitoring of vascular accesses in hemodialysis patients. Continuous assessment of arteriovenous fistulas is essential to detect pathological conditions such as stenosis, which can compromise patient safety and dialysis efficacy. While PPG-based sensors are capable of detecting such anomalies, their clinical applicability must be supported by controlled in vitro validation. The developed system replicates the anatomical, mechanical, optical, and

Dural arteriovenous fistulas (dAVFs) are a heterogeneous group of intracranial vascular anomalies characterized by abnormal arteriovenous shunting within the dura mater. While they are often considered acquired lesions-associated with trauma, surgery, venous sinus stenosis, or thrombosis-their precise etiology remains unclear in many cases. The clinical presentation of dAVFs varies widely depending on location and venous drainage patterns. Benign forms may manifest as pulsatile tinnitus or headache, whereas lesions with retrograde venous drainage and cortical venous reflux are considered aggre

OBJECTIVE: Mature arteriovenous fistulae (AVF) are the gold standard vascular access allowing hemodialysis for patients with end-stage kidney disease. The rate of AVF failure remains high, reflecting an incomplete understanding of the biology of AVF maturation and failure. Sox17 is a transcription factor indispensable for the acquisition and maintenance of endothelial arterial identity. Because endothelial cells (EC) acquire dual arteriovenous identity after AVF creation, we determined whether Sox17 mediates venous remodeling in AVF.
METHODS: Human preaccess vein, failed AVF, and mature AVF f

Hemodialysis patients have an increased risk of bleeding related to platelet dysfunction and uremia leading to acquired defects in primary hemostasis. Frequently, these patients have multiple medical comorbidities requiring treatment with antiplatelet agents and anticoagulants, further increasing their bleeding risk. This presents added challenges when they present to the emergency department (ED) with arteriovenous fistula or arteriovenous graft (AVF/AVG) bleeding. This retrospective cohort study aims to characterize patient characteristics, mortality outcomes, hemorrhage outcomes, infectious

Inferior mesenteric arteriovenous fistula (IMAV AVF) is a rare condition involving the inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) and inferior mesenteric vein (IMV), characterized by direct arteriovenous communication. There have been no more than 50 reported cases in the literature. The condition is categorized as congenital or acquired, with unclear pathogenesis for congenital IMAV AVF and a strong association with abdominal injuries for acquired IMAV AVF. Symptoms typically include abdominal pain, gastrointestinal bleeding, and abdominal masses. Digital subtraction angiography is considered the "gold

Orbital arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are rare entities, either congenital or acquired, that can significantly impair ocular function and aesthetics. Diagnostic evaluation requires multimodal imaging, and treatment is extremely complex, not only due to the limited information available in the literature, but also because of the high recurrence rate of the lesion, therefore requiring a multidisciplinary approach. Treatment involves a multimodal approach, often requiring AVM embolization followed by surgical excision. Endovascular embolization with agents such as ethylene-vinyl alcohol (Ony

An acquired arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is an abnormal connection between the arterial and venous systems, with delayed clinical presentation being rare. We present a 79-year-old male patient who was incidentally found to have a right iliac arteriovenous fistula (AVF) during imaging workup concerning for appendicitis, which would have been a rare diagnosis for a patient in this age group. He denied symptoms suggestive of a fistula and had a normal physical exam, making this an unusual asymptomatic presentation discovered 58 years after a combat blast injury. Endovascular repair required throug

Renal vascular lesions are rare and often asymptomatic. They can be congenital or acquired. Congenital lesions include aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), and arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs). Acquired lesions are usually secondary to trauma or iatrogenic injury and include pseudoaneurysms, AVFs, and vessel transection. Management of renal vascular lesions depends on the location and type of the lesion. AVMs are managed by endovascular embolization of the nidus. It can be done by transarterial route when a single or a few arterial feeders are present. The transvenous route is preferred

Spinal dural arteriovenous fistulas account for the majority of spinal vascular malformations. They are typically located in the thoracolumbar region and are diagnosed in the middle-aged and elderly populations. Although spinal dural arteriovenous fistulas have been postulated to be acquired, their exact development remains uncertain. Typically, the arteriovenous shunt is situated close to the spinal nerve root, inside the dura mater, where the blood from the radiculomeningeal artery and radicular vein intermix. Throughout history, there have been multiple classification systems of spinal arte

Acquired arteriovenous fistula (AVF) in the hand can occur after trauma, fracture, or surgery. It is a rare condition, and only a few cases have been reported in the literature. Clinically they appear as palpable or painful lesions that persist long after the local hematoma has resolved. We report a case of a young patient presenting with long-standing and invalidating pain of the hand caused by a post-traumatic AVF, treated with percutaneous endovascular laser ablation.

A splenic arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is an uncommon splenic vascular disease which can be congenital or acquired. A 40yr old woman, without any history of chronic liver disease, presented with non-specific pain abdomen, underwent contrast-enhanced CT and was diagnosed to have a splenic AVF with multiple intervening venous aneurysms and early filling of the portal vein. The vascular abnormality was successfully treated with a combined percutaneous glue embolisation and endovascular balloon-assisted coil embolisation. Neither recurrence nor other complications were observed in the patient durin

BACKGROUND: Dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVFs) involving superior petrosal sinus (SPS) and superior petrosal vein (SPV) are extremely rare. The pathogenesis of these fistulas remains unclear. We are illustrating 2 cases of DAVFs involving the superior petrosal sinus and veins associated with venous sinus thrombosis with a literature review.
METHODS: We reviewed the literature using the PRISMA (preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses) guidelines focusing on DAVFs involving the SPS and/or SPV. Additionally, we searched for additional articles through the reference l

Coronary artery fistula (CAF) is characterized as a congenital or acquired abnormal communication between a coronary artery and any of the four chambers of the heart (coronary-cameral fistula) or great vessels (coronary arteriovenous fistula) bypassing the capillaries within myocardium. CAF is a rare disease, challenging to diagnose and treat depending on the anatomical location and type of the fistula and accompanying diseases. This study aims to report a case with multiple coronary artery to coronary sinus (CS) fistulas with giant left circumflex artery and multivalvular infective endocardit

BACKGROUND: Three-dimensional time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography (TOF-MRA) is a largely adopted non-invasive technique for assessing cerebrovascular diseases. We aimed to optimize the 7-T TOF-MRA acquisition protocol, confirm that it outperforms conventional 3-T TOF-MRA, and compare 7-T TOF-MRA with digital subtraction angiography (DSA) in patients with different vascular pathologies.
METHODS: Seven-tesla TOF-MRA sequences with different spatial resolutions acquired in four healthy subjects were compared with 3-T TOF-MRA for signal-to-noise and contrast-to-noise ratios as well as u

(1) Background: The surgical procedure to create an arteriovenous fistula (AVF) can be performed in either an ambulatory or in-patient hospital setting, depending on the case's complexity, the anesthesia type used, and the patient's comorbidities. The main scope of this study is to assess the cost-effectiveness and clinical implications of surgically creating an AVF in both ambulatory and in-hospital settings. (2) Methods: We conducted a retrospective observational study, in which we initially enrolled all patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) admitted to the Vascular Surgery Departmen

Coronary arteriovenous fistulas (CAVFs) are congenital or acquired communications between the coronary arteries and coronary venous system, and they can also include other cardiac structures or vasculature. We discuss a case of a large fistula between the left main coronary artery and the right atrium in a geriatric patient with a history of gastrointestinal arteriovenous malformations (AVM). The occurrence of CAVFs, an uncommon cardiac irregularity, is particularly infrequent among older adults. Typically, it is discovered by chance when investigating symptoms such as shortness of breath or c

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain has been implemented to evaluate multiple intracranial pathologies. Non-contrast T2-weighted images are a routinely acquired sequence in almost all neuroimaging protocols. It is not uncommon to encounter various cerebrovascular lesions incidentally on brain imaging. Neuroradiologists should evaluate the routine T2-weighted images for incidental cerebrovascular lesions, irrespective of the primary indication of the study. Vascular structures typically demonstrate a low signal flow-void on the T2-weighted images. In our experience, large cerebrovascu
