Renal arteriovenous anomalies are uncommon. They are characterized by an abnormal vascular connection that usually bypasses the capillary bed. Most are acquired arteriovenous fistulas (AVF) while the rest are congenital or idiopathic arteriovenous malformations (AVM). AVF are usually caused by renal interventions, trauma, or neoplastic processes. They can lead to hypertension, heart failure, hematuria, and renal insufficiency. A 69-year-old woman presented with arrhythmia, tachycardia, mild ankle edema, and increasing fatigue. Right kidney color Doppler ultrasound confirmed the presence of a h

Convexity dural arteriovenous fistula (dAVF) is associated with high-grade dAVF and is usually presented with aggressive clinical presentation. Precise diagnosis and understanding the pathogenesis are important to achieving successful treatment without complications. We report a case of dAVF with Sylvian-Labbé collateral pattern, concerning embryological development that was thought to be involved in the vascular architecture and pathogenesis of dural AVF. Thus, a 60-year-old man was presented with sudden onset of seizure with no history of trauma. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) showed corti

Spinal arteriovenous fistulas (SAVFs) are the most common type of vascular malformation of the spine in adult patients. They can lead to acute or progressive myelopathy due to venous congestion of the medullary veins. While most SAVFs are acquired, their pathophysiology remains unclear. The natural history of the disease and its clinical presentation are highly influenced by the location of the fistula and various factors may trigger sudden neurological decline. We present a case of a patient who developed a complete spinal cord injury after a lumbar nerve root block, likely due to an undiagno

High-grade dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVFs) are known to demonstrate classical dural supply and can demonstrate pre-existing dural supply and 'pure' arterial supply from pial branches. The latter two are examples of congenital versus acquired pial to dural shunting, respectively. We describe the recognition of dural to pial supply during combined transarterial and transvenous embolization of a high-grade DAVF with holocephalic venous reflux, stressing the importance of careful assessment of this condition with micro catheter injections.

Vein of Galen malformations are the most common congenital neurovascular malformation and are a type of choroidal arteriovenous fistula involving the midline primitive choroidal venous circulation. The arteriovenous shunt zone of a VOGM may directly involve the embryonic precursor of the vein of Galen and/or its tributaries within the 3rd ventricle tela choroidea. Dural sinus malformations are characterized by dilated intracranial dural venous sinuses, some of which acquire multifocal arteriovenous shunts within the dural walls of these overgrown venous sinuses.Pial arteriovenous fistulae are

PURPOSE: Arteriovenous fistula (AVF), the preferred vascular access for hemodialysis, is associated with high failure rate. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential of AVF sound auscultation in providing quantitative information on AVF hemodynamic conditions.
METHODS: This single-center prospective study involved six patients with native radio-cephalic AVFs who underwent multiple follow-up visits. Doppler Ultrasound blood flow volume (BFV) assessment and electronic stethoscope-based sound recordings were performed during each visit, whereas MRIs were acquired 3 days, 3 weeks and

A woman in her mid-50s who had undergone a subtotal resection of a peritorcular meningioma 3 years earlier presented with symptoms suggestive of increased intracranial pressure. A delayed diagnosis of a torcular dural arteriovenous fistula (dAVF) diagnosis was made on MRI. Digital subtraction angiography confirmed a torcular dAVF (Borden type II). Staged 3 rounds of transarterial (TA) embolisation were performed using n-butyl cyanoacrylate, ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer and coils of the complex torcular dAVF, which significantly reduced the flow and corresponded with improved symptoms of pu

INTRODUCTION: Vascular access (VA) is essential for patients with hemodialysis, and its dysfunction is a major complication that can reduce quality of life or even threaten life. VA patency is not only difficult to predict on an individual basis, but also challenging to predict in real-time. To overcome this challenge, this study aimed to develop a machine learning approach to predict 6-month primary patency (PP) using photoplethysmography (PPG) signals acquired from the tips of both index fingers.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: PPG signals were obtained from hemodialysis patients who received an art

Traumatic direct type carotid cavernous fistula (CCF) is an acquired arteriovenous shunt between the carotid artery and the cavernous sinus post severe craniofacial trauma or iatrogenic injury. We reported a 46-year-old woman who had developed a traumatic direct type CCF after severe head trauma with a skull base fracture and brain contusion hemorrhage. The clinical manifestations of the patient included pulsatile exophthalmos, proptosis, bruits, chemosis, and a decline in consciousness. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed engorgement of the right superior ophthalmic vein (SOV), perifoca

BACKGROUND: Early integration of palliative care into oncology care has shown positive effects on patient symptoms and quality of life. It may also reduce health care costs. However given the heterogeneity of settings and interventions and the lack of information on the minimally effective dose for influencing care utilisation and costs, it remains uncertain whether early palliative care reduces costs.
OBJECTIVES: We sought to determine whether an early palliative care intervention integrated in usual oncology care in a Swiss hospital setting reduced utilisation and costs of health care in th

INTRODUCTION: Renal-caval Arterio-venous fistulas are rare entity which can be acquired, idiopathic or congenital. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy complicated by arteriovenous fistula formation is extremely rare and often go unnoticed. High output heart failure can occur as a consequence of such high flow fistulas. Repair can be done through open or endovascular approach with the latter being effective and less invasive. Repair can result in resolution of symptoms and improvement of heart function.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 43-year old female who developed an iatrogenic renal-caval fistula

Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) is uncommon. Risk factors include inherited and acquired factors. Rapid diagnosis and treatment is essential and can help prevent complications, which can include seizures and visual disturbance. A 25-year-old woman with a background history of CVST and intermittent warfarin use presented to the hospital in 2021 with a 3-month history of progressive eye swelling and headache. Her headache was located in the right frontal region and worsened with movement. Her workup was consistent with recurrent CVST and dural arteriovenous fistula. IR-guided embolizatio

INTRODUCTION: Developmental venous anomalies (DVAs) have traditionally been defined as non-pathological congenital lesions. Compared to isolated DVAs, the association of DVAs with arteriovenous shunts seems to have a more adverse clinical connotation. In this review, we describe the association between DVA and dAVF and discuss the hemorrhagic risk. We also advance a hypothesis about the potential de novo formation of a DVA and challenge the dogma about their "developmental" or "congenital" nature.
METHODS: A systematic review of the literature on the association of DVA and dAVF was performed

The approach to imaging a patient with kidney failure continues to evolve. Overstatement of the risk of iodinated contrast material-induced (ie, contrast-induced) acute kidney injury and new guidelines for administration of gadolinium-based contrast media affect screening and the choice of contrast material. Treatment of kidney failure requires dialysis or a kidney transplant. Pretransplant imaging includes assessment for the feasibility of performing a transplant and evaluation for underlying malignancy and peripheral vascular disease. Patients with kidney failure are at high risk for renal c

Dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF) is considered an acquired change in blood flow related to factors such as craniotomy, trauma, and infection. However, several factors related to its development remain unknown. Here, we present a case of a 48-year-old man with Down syndrome and Eisenmenger syndrome. He had a history of craniotomy for multiple brain abscesses, followed by the occurrence of a de novo straight sinus (StS) DAVF within the last 2 years. The patient presented with right putamen hemorrhage due to venous congestion by a StS DAVF. The shunt flow was occluded by transarterial embolizat

Traumatic cervical arteriovenous fistulas are rare, accounting for only 4% of all arteriovenous fistulas. They can be caused by penetrating, or rarely, blunt trauma, resulting in high-pressure arterial blood draining directly into a vein, decreasing distal perfusion. They are seldom reported as a complication of a carotid paraganglioma surgical resection. Historically, arteriovenous fistulas were treated initially conservatively, after that, surgically; nowadays, endovascular treatment, when feasible, is the preferred method as it offers advantages over surgery. This case report describes a ra

BACKGROUND: According to Tonnessen BH (2011),1 iatrogenic arteriovenous (AV) fistulas in adults most commonly occur due to endovascular access and procedures. Rarely, AV fistulas have been reported in low birth weight neonates following repeating venipuncture. This complication is extremely uncommon in adults, but has been reported after routine venipuncture for blood transfusion.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of an elderly female patient who presented to the office for evaluation of left upper extremity swelling, ecchymosis, and dilated vessels after routine venipuncture at an outpat
