Risk factors for adverse events following rabies vaccination: a multivariate analysis of real-world data.

PURPOSE: To investigate independent risk and protective factors associated with adverse reactions following rabies vaccination in a Chinese population; to develop and validate a predictive nomogram for clinical utility; to support risk stratification management in clinical practice. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on data from 806 patients who visited the Animal Bite Outpatient Clinic of Ningbo Ninth Hospital between September 2023 and August 2025. Variables were screened using LASSO regression, and a multivariate logistic regression-based nomogram model was constructed. The m

Geospatial surveillance of the rabies virus in cattle in Brazil.

In Brazil, bovine rabies causes significant economic losses and poses a risk to both human and veterinary public health. Its persistence is associated with agricultural expansion, environmental factors, and the presence of reservoirs that favor viral circulation. In this context, spatiotemporal analyses are essential to identify high-risk areas and guide effective surveillance strategies. This study aimed to analyze the spatiotemporal, and temporal trends of bovine rabies in Brazil between 2015 and 2024. An ecological study was conducted using data from the National Animal Health Information S

Rabies Post Exposure Vaccine Effectiveness: A Retrospective Case-Control Study in Amhara Region, Ethiopia.

Rabies can be prevented by vaccination of dogs and provision of post exposure vaccine (PEV) for exposed subjects. There are many post exposure rabies vaccines in the market with their efficacy extending to 100%; however, there are complaints on the effectiveness of the vaccine in the field level. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess PEV effectiveness and identify factors associated with rabies cases. A retrospective case-control study was conducted in the Amhara regional state of Ethiopia from December 2020 to June 2021. Data were collected from a total of 138 subjects (92 controls a

Enhancing rabies epidemic modeling with neural networks and fractional calculus.

Rabies remains a major public health concern, particularly in regions where dog-mediated transmission sustains human infection risk. Classical rabies models often rely on integer-order dynamics and overlook the long incubation periods and delayed behavioral responses that characterize the disease. Moreover, neural-network-based surrogate frameworks have rarely been developed for multi-host rabies systems incorporating biologically realistic incidence mechanisms and fractional memory effects. In this study, we propose an eight-compartment human–dog rabies transmission model governed by the Atang

Rabies and Pinnipeds Reviewed: Premonitions, Perturbations, and Projections?

Rabies is an acute, progressive, viral encephalitis. Warm-blooded vertebrates are susceptible. Major reservoirs reside in the Chiroptera and Carnivora. Among the latter, representatives include dogs, ferret badgers, foxes, jackals, mongooses, raccoons, and skunks. Within the Carnivora, pinnipeds represent a diverse group of >30 extant species. These marine mammals range from the Arctic to Antarctica, but there is no review about rabies in this group. Apparently, only a single 1980 case of rabies occurred from Svalbard in a ringed seal (Phoca hispida). However, in 2024, incidental cases appeare

A Nationwide Cross-Sectional Survey of Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices on Rabies in Saudi Arabia.

Rabies remains a fatal yet preventable zoonotic disease, and understanding population-level knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) is essential to guide national elimination strategies. This nationwide cross-sectional study assessed rabies-related KAP among 2116 residents across all major regions of Saudi Arabia. An online validated questionnaire measured sociodemographic characteristics and KAP indicators. Descriptive and inferential statistics, including logistic regression, were used to identify predictors of good KAP outcomes. Overall, more than half of participants demonstrated poor kn

Advances in Adjuvanted Rabies Vaccines.

Rabies is an acute and fatal zoonotic disease caused by the rabies virus, responsible for approximately 59,000 deaths worldwide each year. Once clinical symptoms manifest, the case fatality rate approaches 100%. Vaccination remains the only effective strategy for prevention and control. Currently, human rabies vaccines approved by regulatory authorities such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the China National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) are all inactivated, adjuvant-free formulations. These vaccines are associated with several limitations, including weak immunogen

Oral Bait Immunization of Eurasian Wild Boar (Sus scrofa) Against African Swine Fever with "ASFV-G-ΔI177L": Bait Performance, Immunogenicity, and Environmental Monitoring.

Background/Objectives: African swine fever is currently the most devastating viral disease affecting domestic and wild suids, causing major economic losses and severe impacts on natural populations. Oral immunization could become an important tool to control the panzootic and support wild pig conservation. However, this requires safe and effective vaccines, baits accepted by target species, and vaccine reservoirs that reliably release the vaccine during bait intake while maintaining vaccine integrity. Methods: We evaluated different bait types and vaccine containers in four wild Suiformes spec

Workshop report: Improving standardisation of rabies serology methods and procedures.

Rabies is a viral disease transmitted primarily through bites or contact with saliva from infected mammals and annually causes approximately 70,000 human deaths worldwide. Rabies vaccines stimulate the production of rabies virus neutralising antibodies (RVNAs), and several assays are used to quantify their concentration. An RVNA threshold of 0.5 IU/mL, set in 1977, is used to determine protection in both humans and animals. In June 2024, an expert workshop was convened after the observation of declining RVNA geometric mean titres in response to 3 different human rabies vaccines, irrespective o

An Open-Source Restraint System for Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Awake Rats.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a critical tool for translational neuroscience, but preclinical studies frequently rely on anesthesia, which alters neural activity and limits comparison with human studies. Awake rodent functional MRI (fMRI) enables investigation of brain function under physiologically relevant conditions; however, its implementation is constrained by the need for anesthesia during restraint setup. We developed and evaluated a restraint system and habituation protocol for awake rat fMRI. Ten rats were studied: an awake group and an anesthetized group (three males and two fe

First Detection of Trichinella pseudospiralis in the Genus Martes Within a Croatian Mustelid Survey.

The prevention of trichinellosis is one of the most important tasks of the public veterinary services. In most EU countries, mandatory testing for parasites of the genus Trichinella includes domestic pigs as well as game species such as wild boar and bears. In Croatia, hunters occasionally also submit badger (Meles meles) meat for Trichinella testing. In addition to the samples from the genus Meles, samples from two other genera within the same family, Martes and Mustela, were analysed. These specimens were most frequently delivered to the laboratory, as roadkill, within a passive surveillance

Combined Glycoprotein Mutations in Rabies Virus Promote Astrocyte Tropism and Protective CNS Immunity in Mice.

Rabies virus (RABV) causes fatal encephalitis once it invades the central nervous system (CNS), and treatment options are extremely limited at this stage. We investigated the recombinant RABV variants SPBN, SPBNGA (glycoprotein substitution R333E), SPBNGAK (R333E plus N194K), SPBNGAS (R333E plus N194S), and TriGAS (three copies of the R333E/N194S glycoprotein). We evaluated their cellular tropism and immune activation in an intracerebral mouse infection model using immunohistochemistry and confocal immunofluorescence. SPBNGAK (R333E/N194K) resulted in mixed neuronal and astrocytic infection an

New treatments to rabies virus infections.

Rabies disease is the deadliest of all virus infections. Till now, vaccination is the most effective and reliable treatment for controlling rabies. However, despite the high efficiency of inactivated vaccines, multiple-dose vaccinations and the high costs of post exposure prophylaxis cause a large economic burden, especially in tropical regions with limited storages of vaccines. New platforms of Rabies virus vaccines (lyophilized vaccines, mRNA vaccines, DNA vaccines, and especially the single-dose vaccines), rabies monoclonal antibodies (especially the antibodies avoiding immune escape) and n

Combined vaccination with anti-GnRH and rabies vaccines in owner-owned male domestic cats: One-year safety, immunogenicity, and reproductive effects.

Domestic cat overpopulation is a global concern, affecting animal welfare, biodiversity, and public health. Surgical castration remains the standard method for controlling tom reproduction, but has notable drawbacks. Gonacon, an anti-GnRH vaccine, offers a potential non-surgical alternative; however, evidence in pet toms in their natural habitats, alongside rabies vaccination, is scarce. Our objective was to evaluate the one-year safety, immunogenicity, and reproductive effects of combined Gonacon and rabies vaccination in owner-owned toms, and to compare responses between indoor and outdoor c

Molecularly Engineered Phenoxazinone-Skeleton Cascade-Activated NIR Probes for Monitoring Fe2+/Viscosity in Ferroptosis-Mediated Parkinson's Disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease, in which ferroptosis may be the crucial event leading to dopaminergic neuron death. Accumulated ferrous ions (Fe2+) and increased intracellular viscosity promote of ferroptosis. Precisely monitoring Fe2+/Viscosity, especially in ferroptosis, is crucial for PD theranostic. However, a feasible strategy is lacking. In this study, series of Fe2+/Viscosity cascade-activated near-infrared fluorescence probes (NP1-5) are synthesized. Through optical characterization and theoretical calculations, NP3 is selected as the optim

Selective genetic targeting of the mouse efferent vestibular nucleus identifies monosynaptic inputs and indicates function as multimodal integrator.

The vestibular system is a critical sensory modality required for coordinated movement, balance, and our ability to interact with the surrounding environment. Vestibular sensory neurons provide the nervous system with information about head rotation and acceleration. However, the nervous system can also modify the activity of sensory neurons and hair cells via the actions of the efferent vestibular system (EVS). The function of the EVS has remained unknown partly because of an inability to target efferent vestibular neurons in a selective manner to understand their synaptic inputs and function
