Preferential crosstalk between perifollicular capillary vessels and dermal papilla cells during hair cycling homeostasis.

The tissue-specific capillary system supports the unique function of each organ and dynamically remodels in response to local requirements. In this study, we found that perifollicular vascularization flexibly adjusts to accommodate physiological changes. Notably, not all capillary vessels responded and migrated equally. However, those around the dermal papilla (DP) exhibited preferential mobilization. Treatment with minoxidil, a hair growth agent, significantly increased perifollicular vessel mobilization around the DP, whereas it was inhibited in experimental models of tissue aging, such as t

Enhanced Scar Reduction Using Topical Application of Captopril-containing Silicone Gel in a Rabbit Model of Hypertrophic Scars.

Antihypertensive medications, including angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and calcium channel blockers, have been explored for their potential in treating pathological scars. We compared the scar-reducing effects of topical silicone and captopril (an ACE inhibitor) gel used alone and in combination. Eight New Zealand White rabbits with a total of 80 wounds on both ears were used. The animals were assigned to the control, vehicle, silicone, and captopril 50 mg/g and 50 mg/g captopril-containing silicone groups (n = 16 per group). Treatment began on day 28 post-scarring. The scar el

Central Serous Chorioretinopathy in Parallel With Onset and Relapses of Minimal Change Nephrotic Syndrome: A 28-Year Case Follow-Up.

Central serous chorioretinopathy is an idiopathic disease that manifests as one or several localized, small, dome-shaped serous retinal detachments on fundus examination. The pathophysiology involves fluid leakage from the choroidal capillaries, known as the choriocapillaris, into the subretinal space through sites of damage in the retinal pigment epithelium. This case report discusses the underlying causes of central serous chorioretinopathy-like findings in minimal change nephrotic syndrome. The patient was a 33-year-old woman who developed nephrotic syndrome that was confirmed to be minimal

Characterisation of a patient-derived iPSC-based model for studying the blood-brain barrier in Alzheimer's disease.

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) comprised of the brain capillary endothelial cells (BCECs), with its tight junctions (TJ), transporters and receptors, regulates the passage of solutes, such as nutrients, metabolites, and xenobiotics, including drugs. In Alzheimer's disease (AD), characterised by the accumulation of amyloid-β peptide (Aβ) and the formation of hyperphosphorylated tau aggregates, a compromised BBB integrity was reported. There is a lack of knowledge about the effects of tau pathology on BBB function in AD. Advances in developing BBB models using human induced pluripotent stem cell

Nailfold capillaroscopy in idiopathic inflammatory myopathies.

Nailfold videocapillaroscopy (NVC) is a non-invasive technique that enables the evaluation of peripheral microcirculation by visualising nailfold capillaries. Although traditionally used in systemic sclerosis, NVC may also be useful in other systemic autoimmune rheumatic diseases, and particularly idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs). This review aims to summarise the current evidence on the prevalence of NVC findings in IIMs and their correlation with clinical and serological characteristics, as well as diagnostic, follow-up, and prognostic implications.

Associations between retinal microvasculature and cognition in middle-aged adults with type 1 diabetes without overt neurological symptoms.

AIMS: Type 1 diabetes is a risk factor for retinal microvascular pathology, cerebral small vessel disease (cSVD), and cognitive deficits. In older individuals with type 1 diabetes, decreased vessel densities of superficial (SCP) and deep (DCP) retinal capillary plexuses have been associated with cognitive impairment. We assessed whether these associations are already evident in midlife among individuals without overt neurological symptoms. We also investigated whether cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) and white matter hyperintensities (WMHs), manifestations of cSVD, modify these associations. METHO

Cell-free nucleic acids as a non-invasive biomarker for predicting COVID-19 disease severity and outcome: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need for novel biomarkers to identify patients at risk of developing severe disease. Circulating cell-free nucleic acids (cfNAs) are released from injured host cells or can be derived from pathogens. As cfNA is suggested to be a useful biomarker in oncologic, autoimmune, and other diseases, the aim of our study was to investigate the role of serum cfNA in predicting the course and outcome of COVID-19 disease. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study at Vilnius University Hospital Santaros Klinikos, utilizing serum samples collected u

Chip electrophoresis titration biosensors: Recent developments for biomedical targets.

Chip Electrophoresis Titration (ET) is an alternative distance-based measurement approach for Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) where the idea of acid-base titration is applied in a microchannel to detect chemical and biological targets through a visual signal analysis. ET principle was initially established utilizing large scale capillary-based Equipment's, where bulky devices were used to access an extensive range of targets analytes, which including disease-related metabolites, metal ions, food contaminants, and proteins. However, regardless of the fast development in miniaturization and the gro

Sphingosine-1-Phosphate Promotes FOS Activation in Osteosarcoma Under Tumor Acidosis.

AIM: The tumor microenvironment in solid tumors is characterized by extracellular acidosis, which promotes cancer aggressiveness. In osteosarcoma, the most common primary bone cancer, a highly acidic tumor microenvironment is associated with metastasis and poor prognosis, partly due to metabolic rewiring, including changes in lipid pathways such as those involving sphingosine-1-phosphate, a bioactive sphingolipid. Sphingosine-1-phosphate has been previously implicated in histone deacetylase inhibition and gene activation. Here, we investigated whether acidosis induces nuclear sphingosine-1-pho

Feasibility and stability evaluation of parabens as an alternative preservative for liquid monoclonal antibody formulations.

Preservatives are critical for preventing microbial contamination in multi-dose biologics, yet their compatibility with proteins poses a major challenge. Traditional preservatives such as benzyl alcohol are limited by instability, adsorption, and negative effects on protein stability. This study demonstrates that parabens, including methylparaben and propylparaben, are feasible alternatives in trastuzumab liquid formulations. Differential scanning fluorimetry revealed minimal impact on monoclonal antibody conformational and colloidal stability compared with conventional preservatives. Trastuzu
