Smooth muscle alpha-actin (SMA) is a cytoskeletal protein expressed in vascular smooth muscle cells, pericytes, hair follicle dermal sheaths and myofibroblasts which appear in the process of wound healing and tumor growth. Reflectance spectroscopy, which allows an objective evaluation of the color of surfaces, has recently been proposed as a useful tool to discriminate cutaneous melanoma from other pigmented cutaneous lesions. The AgNOR number (NN) and the AgNOR quotient (NQ) of 228 melanocytic, epidermal and fibrohistiocytic lesions were investigated by image analysis. In melanocytic nevi, dysplastic nevi and Spitz nevi, significantly less AgNORs were seen than in malignant melanomas and melanomas in situ. AIMS: To draw attention to non-neoplastic inclusions in axillary lymph nodes removed from women with primary breast cancer which may be mistaken for metastases.

We investigated the presence of proopiomelanocortin (POMC) products in sections of skin from normal subjects and patients with neoplastic and non-neoplastic cutaneous disorders. A total of 87 human specimens with 10 histological types of primary neoplasm were studied immunohistochemically with monoclonal antibodies specific for beta-hexosaminidase (Hex). High levels of Hex were found in malignant neoplasms of the skin, cervix, colorectum and in benign as well as neoplastic plasma cells, while no activity was detected in normal epidermis, normal colorectal epithelium or benign naevi. Reflectance spectrophotometry from 420 to 780 nm on 31 primary melanoma and 31 benign nevi has been performed by using an external integrating sphere coupled to a spectrophotometer. Ulex europeus (Ulex 1) has been used to study the expression of cell surface alpha-L-fucose on oral epithelial cells of normal human mucosa, white lesions and carcinomas. In normal tissue and in 11 of 12 specimens of non-specific keratoses (leukoplakia), Ulex 1 stained epithelial spinous cells only. Two cases of neurocutaneous melanosis with development of malignant melanoma in the Japanese are presented. The first case was a 4-year-old boy in whom a retroperitoneal melanoma appeared with giant nevi, and cerebral and spinal melanosis.
