A quantitative morphological study, at light microscopical level, of hearts from young diabetics and nondiabetics was performed. The groups were comparable with respect to sex-ratio, age, heart weight and blood pressure. Findings in the hearts were as follows: In arterioles in which the luminal diameter ranged between 15-50 mu, a strongly PAS-positive stained vessel wall occurred at a higher frequency among diabetics than among non-diabetics (75 per cent respectively 33 per cent). In a series of 40 cases of lung cancer, we recorded arterial dilution curves before and after unilateral occlusion of the pulmonary artery (on the pathologic side) following injection of dye into the pulmonary arterial trunk ("arterial curves") and in the capillary wedge position ("capillary curves"). Flat preparations of the retina were prepared by trypsin digestion in ten cases of Coats' disease. All of the patients were young males with advanced disease leading to enucleation. All eyes showed marked abnormalities in the arterioles, venules, and capillaries. The effects of chronic oral vasodilator therapy were studied in a group of patients with refractory congestive heart failure. Fifteen patients were treated acutely with intravenous sodium nitroprusside and sublingual isosorbide dinitrate. The hemodynamic effects of oral hydralazine were investigated in ten patients (nine in NYHA Class IV and one in Class III) with chronic refractory heart failure. With hemodynamic monitoring, adequate oral doses of hydralazine (50 or 75 mg) were determined and then administered every six hours.
