Forty-two cases of surgically treated pericarditis are presented, with comments on the management and pathophysiology of the acute, recurrent, and chronic stages of the disease. The spectrum of aetiological factors has changed within the last few decades in that tuberculosis is now rare, whereas uraemic pericarditis is referred to surgery with increasing frequency. With the advent of haemodialysis and renal transplantation, these cases should be treated vigorously, since they are amenable to surgical cure. Skin and kidney biopsies were performed on 262 patients with various nephropathies. In 45 skin biopsy specimens finely granular deposits of predominantly IgA and late-acting complement factors were detected in the walls of superficial capillaries, sometimes concomitantly with IgM, IgG, C4 or a combination of these proteins. Six patients with mesangiocapillary glomerulonephritis and intramembranous dense "deposits" developed terminal renal failure and were transplanted, three from living and three from cadaver donors. Coagulation studies from capillary blood, consisting of the determination of fibrinogen, factors II and V and proactivator-plasminogen, were done in 104 newborns. In healthy newborns fibrinogen and factor V was found near the adult level, while factor II and proactivator-plasminogen showed a severe deficit. Experimental Rocky Mountain spotted fever was studied in guinea pigs following intraperitoneal inoculation of 10(7) Rickettsia rickettsii. After a 2-day incubation period, animals developed fever, progressive emaciation, and scrotal swelling with necrosis. Vasculitis, with increased small vessel permeability for colloidal carbon, was evident in cremaster muscles as early as 1 day after inoculation. There is a considerable controversy regarding the frequency and significance of vascular lesions in leprosy. Twenty-six cases of leprosy below the age of 40 years, without any local or systemic arterial disease and normal looking hands were subjected to brachial arteriography. During each week of 1974, we surveyed, for illnesses and deaths, a continually changing population of yearling feedlot cattle that, for the year, totaled 407,000 animals. Twelve dogs were fed mutton containing small sarcocysts, and killed 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 10, 15, 16, 17 days after infection (DAI). Beginning 13-15 DAI sporocysts 14.7 times 9.0 mum were passed in the faeces of the dogs killed 15-17 DAI. Histological examination showed that developing stages were most numerous in the subepithelial tissue at the tips of villi in the proximal third of the small intestine. Macrogametes containing tiny PAS + granules, and microgametocytes with peripheral developing microgametes were present 1 DAI. By 4 DAI oocysts, with a small nucleus and vacuolate cytoplasm were seen.

Four theories of atherogenesis are briefly reviewed and criticized: the degenerative, the thrombogenic, the platelet aggregation and the insudative theory. A clinical syndrome of prestenotic enteritis and enterocolitis consisting of abdominal distention and pain, intermittent diarrhea and constipation, failure to thrive, fever and in some patients, extreme prostration and death is described. The pathogenesis of this enteritis and enterocolitis apparently is related to partial mechanical obstruction of the bowel with proximal dilatation, stagnation, and capillary stasis. Acute relief from the enteritis and enterocolitis may be obtained by stomal dilatation and colonic irrigation; however, all patients in our series required surgical intervention.
