Rabies is a fatal zoonotic disease that affects warm-blooded vertebrates and is caused primarily by members of the Lyssavirus genus (family Rhabdoviridae, order Mononegavirales). Three Lyssavirus species, namely Lyssavirus duvenhage and the putative lyssaviruses Lyssavirus matlo and Lyssavirus phyla, were first identified in insectivorous bat species in South Africa through lyssavirus surveillance activities. For the proposed and effective global elimination of dog-mediated human rabies by 2030; it is important to contextualize the pivotal role of wildlife in the maintenance and the likely spi

Rabies remains a fatal zoonotic disease of major public health and veterinary importance in Latin America. Although canine-mediated rabies has markedly declined in Colombia, sylvatic transmission persists in rural regions, and information on equine rabies in Putumayo is scarce. This study aimed to describe the epidemiological, clinical, gross pathological, and surveillance characteristics of laboratory-confirmed equine rabies cases in Putumayo, southern Colombia, during 2024-2025. A retrospective descriptive study was conducted using national surveillance data. Thirteen equids were identified

Cat-related injuries are a frequent reason for antirabies consultation, but long-term data on their epidemiology and management remain limited, particularly in European settings that have transitioned from endemic sylvatic rabies to officially rabies-free status. We retrospectively analysed registry data on all patients examined for cat-related injuries at the Zagreb Antirabies Clinic, the Croatian Reference Centre for Rabies, between 1995 and 2025. Among 24,107 animal-related consultations, 3147 (13.1%) involved cats. Most patients were female (64.8%), and children under 18 years of age accou

Rabies virus (RABV) is a lethal zoonotic pathogen that remains endemic in some parts of the world despite long-standing vaccination efforts. We present a comprehensive genomic and evolutionary analysis of the sylvatic rabies epidemic in Switzerland (1967-97) and propose a molecular epidemiological framework describing RABV dynamics from emergence to elimination, with relevance for countries pursuing wildlife rabies elimination. We generated almost whole-genome sequences from 88 RABV-positive brain samples collected across 17 Swiss cantons and 13 host species over three decades. Using Illumina

Human rabies is an invariably fatal encephalitis caused by Lyssavirus species, with near-100% lethality after symptom onset. In Brazil, canine vaccination has markedly reduced urban transmission. However, human deaths continue to occur and are increasingly linked to sylvatic reservoirs, particularly Desmodus rotundus bats. This study describes the epidemiological profile of human rabies in Brazil from 2010 to 2025, focusing on temporal trends, aggressor species, demographics, geographic distribution, and genetic/antigenic variants. This descriptive time-series study used secondary data from th

The rabies virus (genus Lyssavirus), is a deadly zoonotic agent affecting humans and animals. Although Mexico has been declared free of canine rabies (V1), sylvatic rabies persists. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of the virus in Desmodus rotundus and other non-hematophagous bat species in Oaxaca. The methodology comprised four stages: a literature review, data requests to the Servicio Nacional de Sanidad, Inocuidad y Calidad Agroalimentaria (SENASICA), fieldwork using mist nets across 15 municipalities in Oaxaca, and diagnosis via direct immunofluorescence at the Centro Nacional

The hematophagous bats are usually the main reservoir of sylvatic rabies, being one of the most important viral zoonoses affecting humans and livestock in Latin America. Despite the most countries have already studied spatio-temporal distribution of bovine rabies, however, in Ecuador, little has been reported about the state of rabies in the country. Aiming to this objective, a descriptive observational study was realized from 2007 to 2020 based on the formal reports by WAHI-OIE and surveillance of bovine rabies retrieved from its official website. During the study period in Ecuador, some 895

AIMS: Rabies virus (RV) is endemic in some Arabian countries. However, it is difficult to control RV without understanding the epidemiological evolution of endemic RV isolates. The current study aimed to characterize RV from domestic and wild animal clinical cases in Oman.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Twelve brain samples from domestic (Five camels, three goats and one cattle) and wild animals (Two foxes and one honey badger) were investigated from different locations in Oman between 2017 and 2020. All samples were confirmed by RV nucleoprotein (N) gene-specific primers. Seven out of the 12 amplified

South-East Asia (SEA) and South Asia (SA) are two important geographic regions with the most severe enzootic rabies in the world. In these regions, phylogenetic analysis of rabies virus (RABV) has been conducted only at a country level; the results obtained from different countries are scattered and unequal, with a non-uniform system to name RABV genotypes. Therefore, it is difficult to undertake origin-tracking and compare inter-country RABV evolution and transmission. To avoid the confusion in understanding and to generate a panoramic picture of RABV genetic diversity, distribution, and tran

Rabies is one of the most significant public and veterinary health problems, causing approximately 59,000 human deaths annually in the developing countries of Asia and Africa. The aetiologic agent, a viral species of the Lyssavirus genus, is highly neurotropic and has a wide host range, including terrestrial mammals and several Chiropteran species. The Lyssavirus mokola (MOKV) was first isolated in the late 1960s from organ pools of shrews (Crocidura flavescens manni) in the Mokola forest (Nigeria). To date, at least 30 MOKV isolations have been confirmed, all exclusively from Africa, with 73%

The implementations of coordinated, standardised, and sustained oral rabies vaccination (ORV) campaigns over large areas have led to the almost elimination of sylvatic rabies from the European Union (EU) territory at the approach of 2020. The annual number of rabies cases reported within EU territory indeed dropped from around 13,000 cases in 1990 to less than 10 cases over the 2017-2019 period. Unfortunately, since 2020, the EU territory has faced two major rabies re-emergence events of rabies lyssavirus in non-flying animals. The first sylvatic rabies outbreak, already described, occurred in

Human rabies has been described by various cultures in many countries around the world. Gabriel García Márquez's novel Of love and other demons recounts the story of a girl who, in colonial Colombia in the 18th century, was bitten by a rabid dog. This paper aims to review the general status of the disease in Colombia and interweave it with García Márquez's book. Developed countries have successfully controlled dog-mediated rabies virus transmission, whereas in some countries in Latin America wildlife and canine rabies are still an issue. Our approach suggests that although the measures that ha

Introduction: Rabies is caused by a virus belonging to the genus Lyssavirus and family Rhabdoviridae, which can infect any mammal including humans. Hematophagous, fructivorous, and insectivorous bats have become the main reservoir of sylvatic rabies in Latin America. In the sylvatic cycle, hematophagous bats are usually the main reservoir. In contrast, dogs and cats fulfil this critical role in the urban cycle. However, in rural areas, the most affected animals are bovines. They show clinical signs such as behavioural changes, hypersalivation, muscle tremors, spasms caused by extensive damage

Rabies is a viral zoonosis that causes an estimated 59,000 preventable human fatalities every year. While more than 120 countries remain endemic for dog-mediated rabies, the burden is the highest in Africa and Asia where 99% of human rabies cases are caused by domestic dogs. One such rabies-endemic country is South Africa where an estimated 42 preventable human deaths occur every year. Although canine rabies had been well described for most of the provinces in South Africa, the epidemiology of rabies within the North West Province had not been well defined prior to this investigation. As such,

Sylvatic rabies was present in Slovenia between 1973 and 2013, with the red fox as the main reservoir of the rabies virus. The first oral rabies vaccination (ORV) control program in foxes started in 1988, using the manual distribution of baits. Significant improvement of fox vaccination was achieved with the aerial distribution of baits, starting in 1995 and successfully finished with the final, fifty-ninth vaccination campaign in 2019. Between 1979 and 2019, a total of 86,471 samples were tested, and 10,975 (12.69%) rabies-positive animals were identified. Within the ORV, two different vaccin

Rabies virus is recognized as one of the most fatal zoonotic agents affecting all mammals. Wild boars (Sus scrofa), classified as a large-size exotic invasive species in Brazil with nationwide hunting permitted, may serve as an extra blood source for the common vampire bat (Desmodus rotundus). Our aim was to document wild boar exposure to vampire bats to determine the seroprevalence of rabies virus antibodies in wild boars and to determine the immune status of hunters in southern and central-western Brazilian regions. Serum samples were collected from 80 wild boars and 49 hunters from natural

The objective of this paper is to provide an overview of the current status of rabies in Europe, with special emphasis on Croatia and Southeast and East Europe. Due to the systematic implementation of a rabies eradication program by oral vaccination of wild animals, by the end of the 20th century, most West and Central European countries were rabies-free. The EU goal was to eradicate rabies in wildlife and domestic animals by 2020. No matter how achievable the goal seemed to be, the disease is still present in the eastern part of the EU, as was notified in 2020 by two member states-Poland and

Brazil has been promoting essential improvements in health indicators by implementing free-access health programs, which successfully reduced the prevalence of neglected zoonosis in urban areas, such as rabies. Despite constant efforts from the authorities to monitor and control the disease, sylvatic rabies is a current issue in Amazon's communities. The inequalities among Amazon areas challenge the expansion of high-tech services and limit the implementation of active laboratory surveillance to effectively avoid outbreaks in human and non-human hosts, which also reproduces a panorama of vulne

INTRODUCTION: Rabies is considered one of the most relevant public health problems owing to its high fatality rate and the high number of deaths worldwide.
METHODS: We included patients with human rabies who attended a reference hospital in the state of Ceará during 1976-2019.
RESULTS: Data were available for 63 out of 171 (36.8%) patients. Of these patients, 48 (76.2%) were attacked by dogs. In recent years, wild animals have been the most common aggressor species (marmosets and bats). Only 39 (70%) patients were initially correctly suspected with rabies. Bites were the most frequent exposu

Rabies transmitted by sylvatic populations has become an increasing concern in Brazil. A total of 113 participants with a history of contact with sylvatic populations were interviewed in 27 municipalities of Ceará State in northeast Brazil. Questionnaires included questions on knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) regarding sylvatic rabies. Most of the respondents (92%) knew about rabies and confirmed at least one species that transmitted the disease (79.6%). Of these respondents, 69% mentioned monkeys, and 67.2% mentioned dogs. However, 16% of the respondents listed an incorrect species. I
