[An outbreak of human rabies transmitted by a cat in the town of Santander de Quilichao, Colombia, 2008].

OBJECTIVES: A sylvatic rabies outbreak during March 2008 caused two human deaths in the town of Santander de Quilichao in Cauca, Colombia. This article describes the diagnostic laboratory techniques used, the field investigation and focus control used, as well as this outbreak's epidemiological significance and implications for public health. METHODS: Rabies was diagnosed by direct immunofluorescence, biological tests involving inoculating mice, histopathology and immunohistochemistry and then typed by using monoclonal antibodies. Field investigation focused on searching for human and animal

The rabies elimination programme in Estonia using oral rabies vaccination of wildlife: preliminary results.

The first case of sylvatic rabies in Estonia was recorded in 1968. Rabies is maintained in raccoon dogs and red foxes. The main prophylactic means used in animals up to 2005 consisted of compulsory vaccination of dogs and cats. In October 2005, the first large scale wildlife oral vaccination campaign was carried out in the northern part of the country (25,800 km2) from the western to the eastern border, including islands. In 2006, two campaigns were conducted across the country. Rabies surveillance and the efficacy of oral vaccination were assessed by a follow-up of rabies incidence and bait c

Elimination of rabies in the Czech Republic.

Rabies in foxes was widespread in the territory of the Czech Republic after the Second World War. The first three cases of fox rabies appeared in North and South Bohemia in 1947. In the following year, a considerable increase in rabies incidence was reported and of the 146 cases, 106 (74 %) of the 117 wildlife cases were in foxes. Rabies in foxes and other wild animals was verified in many border Czech and Moravian districts. Sylvatic rabies was established in the Czech Republic and persisted there enzootically for many years as a continuing problem. The red fox (Vulpes vulpes) became the prin

The molecular epidemiology of rabies associated with chiropteran hosts in Mexico.

While large-scale dog vaccination campaigns have significantly reduced urban rabies throughout Mexico, reports of sylvatic rabies, including cases of spill-over of bat strains into livestock and humans, are increasing. To improve knowledge of these epidemiological trends, 64 Mexican rabies virus isolates from various host species, have been characterized. Phylogenetic analysis at the viral P locus identified distinct viral strains associated with terrestrial reservoirs (dog, skunk and fox/bobcat) and a variant associated with the insectivorous bat, T. brasiliensis, consistent with prior report

The efficacy of a new single post-exposure treatment of rabies in mice without vaccination.

Local application of rabies immune serum and isoprinosine, an immunomodulator with antiviral activity was effective in mice infected with a sylvatic rabies virus. In this way, a single medical or veterinary treatment is only required, which is particularly important for developing but also for developed countries. The importance of using a post-exposure potency test to monitor rabies vaccines is emphasized. The same principle could be applied to other emerging viral infections of humans (for example, human immunodeficiency virus infection) and animals, for which no effective vaccines are avail

[10 years' of production and use of human rabies immunoglobulin in Yugoslavia].

Application of the rabies immunoglobuline is a compulsory part of the prophylaxis of rabies in all severe, transdermal lesions caused by rabies infected animals. Sylvatic rabies has spread in the past few years throughout the whole Yugoslavia, and human cases of rabies have also been reported in other East European countries. In order to achieve the highest level of rabies prophylaxis, apart from postinfective rabies vaccination, it is necessary to provide passive immunization using specific antibodies against rabies. After successful immunization of the young, healthy volunteers in 1990, Nati

Epidemiology and control of fox rabies in Europe.

During recent years, most of the research on the control of sylvatic rabies has concentrated on developing methods of oral vaccination of wild rabies vectors. In order to improve both the safety and the stability of the vaccine used, a recombinant vaccinia virus which expresses the immunizing glycoprotein of rabies virus (VRG) has been developed and extensively tested in the laboratory as well as in the field. From 1989 until 1995, several million VRG vaccine doses have been dispersed in western Europe for vaccination of red foxes. In Europe, the use of VRG has lead to the elimination of sylva

Discrimination between epidemiological cycles of rabies in Mexico.

BACKGROUND: The design of efficient rabies control programs within a geographic area requires an appropriate knowledge of the local epidemiological cycles. In Latin America, there is a geographical overlap of the two main epidemiological cycles: (a) the terrestrial cycle, where the dog is the main terrestrial vector and the principal cause of human transmission; and (b) the aerial cycle, in which the vampire bat Desmodus rotundus is representative in Mexico. This bat is the major sylvatic rabies vector transmitting rabies to cattle. The purpose of this study was to distinguish between the epid

[Epizootiologic situation of rabies in 1997. Urbanization of sylvatic rabies in Yugoslavia].

The Federal Republic of Yugoslavia is situated on the border of a great sylvatic rabies epizootics occurring in central and eastern Europe. That is the reason why a relatively small number of rabid animals have been registered. In 1997, 124 rabid animals, mainly red foxes, were identified. In recent years red fox rabies epizootics in Yugoslavia has annually spread 15-20 km to the south. Rabies in domestic animals, especially dogs, was characterized with furious clinical forms and dog-to-dog transmission typical of urban rabies. Sylvatic rabies has been almost completely eradicated in some coun

[Rabies in dogs and efficacy of active immunoprophylaxis in Yugoslavia].

In this study we analyzed 36 cases of dog rabies diagnosed at the Pasteur Institute in Novi Sad during the last 10 years as well as the quality of postvaccination immunity. Most dogs had the paralytic form, more common in sylvatic rabies than furious clinical picture. 11% of dogs were aggressive, whereas 44% had injured humans, including their owners. Postvaccination immunity was examined in a group of dogs vaccinated with three domestic and one vaccine imported from abroad. Vaccination was successful in more than 70% of dogs and it is a sufficient percentage of seroconversion in dog rabies er

Comparison of the susceptibility of the red fox (Vulpes vulpes) to a vaccinia-rabies recombinant virus and to cowpox virus.

Sylvatic rabies can be efficiently controlled by vaccination of foxes with a vaccinia-rabies recombinant virus. However, the risk of recombination between the engineered vaccine virus and other orthopoxviruses endemic in wildlife, such as cowpox virus, still needs to be investigated. In this study, foxes inoculated orally and intradermally with cowpox virus were found to be not very susceptible to cowpox virus, which was isolated from only the oropharynx and tonsils, at low titre and for only five days after inoculation. Thus the risk of recombination between these viruses in foxes is very low

An epidemic of sylvatic rabies in Finland--descriptive epidemiology and results of oral vaccination.

When rabies reappeared in Finland in April 1988, the country had been rabies free since 1959. Soon a picture of sylvatic rabies become evident, its main vector and victim being the raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides). Between 8 April 1988 and 16 February 1989, 66 virologically verified cases were recorded (48 raccoon dogs, 12 red foxes, 2 badgers, 2 cats, 1 dog and 1 dairy bull) in an area estimated at 1700 km2 in south-eastern Finland. The greatest distance between recorded cases was 67 km. A positive reaction with monoclonal antibody p-41 indicated that the virus was an arctic-type strain

Sylvatic rabies in Italy: epidemiology.

Epidemiological data on sylvatic rabies in Italy, during 10 years, from 1977 to 1986 are reported. This rabies epizootic expanded to all the alpine arch from Trieste to Aosta, can be divided in five different outbreaks. The good knowledge of the infected alpine area helped us in the identification of rabies outbreaks and in rabies struggle and prevention. Data from the literature on the relationship: landscape/fox/density/fox hunting/rabies have been confirmed and contributed to disease eradication. In a ten year epizootic, no human cases of rabies have been reported thanks to continuing healt

[Evaluation of the ERA antirabies vaccine against antigenic variants of rabies virus in various post-immunization periods].

Protection levels of an attenuated antirabies vaccine, of ERA origin, prepared in Kidney tissue culture, were evaluated in mice. Two schemes of vaccination were utilized: a single dose and 6 doses on alternate days. Animals of different experimental groups were challenged at 15, 30, 60 and 120 days postimmunization with six antigenic variants of rabies virus: strains of dog origin (S. Paulo, Brazil and Nigeria), vampire origin (DR-19 and Pernambuco, Brazil), fox origin (Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil), and CVS (Challenge Virus Standard). The results showed the effectiveness of the ERA vaccine aga

The rabies situation in The Netherlands.

From time to time the Netherlands are confronted with sylvatic rabies. The last time was in December 1986. The distribution of sylvatic rabies is restricted to certain areas: mainly the northeast and the south. Rabies is considered not to be endemic in the Netherlands. Oral vaccination is at the moment not under discussion. Since August 1986 examination on bat rabies has started. In 1987 81 out of 1150 bats were found to be positive. The epidemiology of this type of rabies is still unclear.

[The Italian experience in the control of rabies. I. Procedural methods].

Oral vaccination of foxes associated with their control has been shown to be a rapid and safe method to extinguish enzootic foci of sylvatic rabies and to prevent the entry and spreading of this zoonosis in free zones of Italy. Domestic animals vaccination with live modified vaccines in zones with sylvatic rabies has proved to be highly effective in limiting the cases, recorded only in non-vaccinated animals.

The authors briefly report the results of laboratory and epidemiological investigations on living modified and inactivated antirabies vaccines, started in 1975 and carried out in collaboration with public health authorities and scientific institutions. The antirabies oral vaccination of foxes, using a live and modified vaccine (SADB19 Tüb.) began in Brescia province (Val Camonica) in 1984 and was extended in 1985 to Bolzano and Trento provinces. Since July 1986 no more cases of rabies have been observed in Italy. The problems related to the distribution in the territory of live and modified an
