Prevalence and Prognostic Role of Lymphedema in Patients with Deep Venous Thrombosis and Thrombophlebitis.

Background: Deep venous thrombosis (DVT) poses a substantial disease burden. Lymphedema may present with similar symptoms making the diagnosis process more difficult. Data on the epidemiology of lymphedema are lacking. Methods: The German nationwide inpatient sample served to analyze all patients hospitalized owing to DVT and/or thrombophlebitis (referred to as DVT) of the legs in Germany between 2005 and 2020. We stratified these patients for additional lymphedema and analyzed the impact of lymphedema on adverse in-hospital events. Results: Overall, 1,136,574 hospitalizations related to DVT w

Incidence and causes of early unplanned readmission after hospitalisation with peripheral arterial disease in Australia and New Zealand.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the characteristics and predictors of unplanned readmission within 30 days of hospitalisation for the treatment of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) in Australia and New Zealand. DESIGN: Analysis of hospitalisations data in the Admitted Patient Collection for each Australian state and territory and the New Zealand National Minimum Dataset (Hospital Events). SETTING: All public and 80% of private hospitals in Australia and New Zealand. PARTICIPANTS: Adults (18 years or older) hospitalised with a primary or conditional secondary diagnosis of PAD during 1 January 2010 -

External Iliac Artery to Tibial Arteries Vein Graft for Inaccessible Femoral Artery.

BACKGROUND: An endovascular-first approach to limb salvage and relief from lifestyle-limiting claudication is widely accepted. Stenosis or short occlusion of common, superficial femoral, and popliteal arteries can be corrected with percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) with stent positioning. Patency rates of these procedures are limited. We report our experience with external iliac artery to the infrapopliteal vessels vein grafts when the endovascular treatment fails. METHODS: Between January 2013 and January 2019, 16 patients (16 limbs) were operated on for limb-threatening ischemia a

2016 AHA/ACC Guideline on the Management of Patients With Lower Extremity Peripheral Artery Disease: Executive Summary: A Report of the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association Task Force on Clinical Practice Guidelines.

UNLABELLED: Since 1980, the American College of Cardiology (ACC) and American Heart Association (AHA) have translated scientific evidence into clinical practice guidelines with recommendations to improve cardiovascular health. These guidelines, based on systematic methods to evaluate and classify evidence, provide a cornerstone of quality cardiovascular care. In response to reports from the Institute of Medicine, and a mandate to evaluate new knowledge and maintain relevance at the point of care, the ACC/AHA Task Force on Clinical Practice Guidelines (Task Force) modified its methodology.– The

International trends in patient selection for elective endovascular aneurysm repair: sicker patients with safer anatomy leading to improved 1-year survival.

BACKGROUND: To review the trends in patient selection and early death rate for patients undergoing elective endovascular repair of infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysms (EVAR) in 3 countries. For this study, audit data from 4,163 patients who had undergone elective infrarenal EVAR were amalgamated. The data originated from Australia, Canada (Ontario), and England (London, Cambridge, and Leicester). METHODS: Statistical analyses were undertaken to determine whether patient characteristics and early death rate varied between and within study groups and over time. The study design was retrospect

How much are we spending? The estimation of research expenditures on cardiovascular disease in Canada.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading cause of death in Canada and is a priority area for medical research. The research funding landscape in Canada has changed quite a bit over the last few decades, as have funding levels. Our objective was to estimate the magnitude of expenditures on CVD research for the public and charitable (not-for profit) sectors in Canada between 1975 and 2005. METHODS: To estimate research expenditures for the public and charitable sectors, we compiled a complete list of granting agencies in Canada, contacted each agency and the Canadian Institutes of

Variability in case mix and peritoneal dialysis selection in fifty-nine French districts.

In France, the use of peritoneal dialysis (PD) as the first-choice treatment varies greatly between districts, as it is already known to do between countries. Baseline clinical factors associated with choice of first modality were analyzed in 10 815 new end-stage renal disease patients in 59 districts. To describe practices at the district level, we used an agglomerative hierarchical classification, with proximity defined by a likelihood-ratio test that compared multivariate logistic regressions of the following factors: age, gender, diabetes, congestive heart failure, severe behavioral disord

New classification system-based visual outcome in Eales' disease.

PURPOSE: A retrospective tertiary care center-based study was undertaken to evaluate the visual outcome in Eales' disease, based on a new classification system, for the first time. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and fifty-nine consecutive cases of Eales' disease were included. All the eyes were staged according to the new classification: Stage 1: periphlebitis of small (1a) and large (1b) caliber vessels with superficial retinal hemorrhages; Stage 2a: capillary non-perfusion, 2b: neovascularization elsewhere/of the disc; Stage 3a: fibrovascular proliferation, 3b: vitreous hemorrhage; Stag

A new staging system for idiopathic retinal periphlebitis.

PURPOSE: To develop and standardize a universally acceptable new staging system for idiopathic retinal periphlebitis (Eales disease). METHODS: A new staging system was established and standardized based on standard terminology and features. Idiopathic retinal periphlebitis was classified as peripheral and central types. Peripheral disease consisted of four stages. Stage 1 is periphlebitis of small (1a) and large (1b) caliber vessels with superficial retinal hemorrhages. Stage 2a denotes capillary nonperfusion and 2b neovascularization elsewhere/of the disc. Stage 3a is classified as fibrovasc

Fifteen years of experience in treating 2177 episodes of foot and leg lesions with the circulator boot. Results of treatments with the circulator boot.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the clinical effectiveness of the end-diastolic pneumatic compression boot and of local antibiotics in treating limb lesions associated with diabetes and peripheral arterial, venous, and neuropathic disease. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Office and hospital data were kept over 15 years on 2177 episodes of leg problems classified by the Wagner method for 1514 legs of 1035 patients largely referred because of failure of standard therapies. The fate of the untreated legs served as a controls when possible. RESULTS: Healing or improvement of treated legs was seen above tha

The diagnostic value of clinical signs and symptoms in patients with Raynaud's phenomenon. A cross-sectional study.

Patients presenting with Raynaud's phenomenon pose differential diagnostic problems. The question is whether the discolorations are a symptom of the benign primary type or a symptom of an underlying disease, mostly a connective tissue disease or an atherosclerotic occlusive disease, both having major prognostic implications. To evaluate whether Raynaud patients can be classified properly in the above-mentioned categories on clinical grounds we evaluated 225 patients using a checklist dealing with signs and symptoms supposed to be specific for primary Raynaud's phenomenon or the two major types
