OBJECTIVE: To describe a complication of placement of an inferior vena cava (IVC) filter in a man with paraplegia.
DESIGN: Case report.
PARTICIPANTS/METHODS: A 48-year-old man with T11 paraplegia secondary to an L1 burst fracture underwent thoracic spinal fusion. The postoperative course was complicated by deep vein thrombosis (DVT) of the right common femoral vein, which was treated with warfarin.
RESULTS: During rehabilitation, the hematocrit declined, and fluctuance was noted along the surgical site. Computed tomographic scan suggested a hematoma in the paraspinal and latissimus dorsi mu

Lower extremity's venous pathology was traditionally investigated by intravenous venography. Nowadays Color Doppler flow imaging is widely accepted as a well established, noninvasive method for the evaluation of deep pelvic and lower extremity's venous system. The vast majority of authors conclude that the method can safely replace diagnostic venography in all patients with venous thrombosis, thrombophlebitis and valve or communicating veins insuffciency. Optimal performance of Color Doppler flow imaging as a diagnostic tool for the whole lower limb veins requires: Proper equipment specificati

Here we describe an 8-year old male child with homozygous sickle cell disease who presented with left parietal skull bone infarction and, during his stay in hospital, developed a right femoral deep vein thrombosis (DVT), both uncommon complications of the disease. He initially presented with severe headache and generalised tenderness of the calvarium, which did not respond to simple analgesics. Scalp swelling in and around the left frontal (including left orbit) and parietal regions developed 24 h after presentation. The differential diagnosis included incipient stroke, acute sickle bone crisi

Candida infection following central venous catheterization (CVC) is a well known complication, most common infection being that caused by Candida albicans. Less common is infection with Candida glabrata. Candida septic thrombophlebitis of the central veins is an uncommon complication after CVC. We report the first case of inferior vena cava filter infection with C. glabrata following septic thrombophlebitis of the femoral veins and discuss management of this rare complication.

UNLABELLED: Thrombophlebitis (TP) of the superficial venous system is associated to a high percentage with deep venous thrombosis (DVT). References in literature vary between 5 and 65 %, pulmonary embolisms (LE) were described in up to 33 %.
PATIENTS: In a retrospective study, 114 patients who had presented themselves with a TP of the superficial venous system between January 1 (st) and December 31 (st) 2004, were analysed in our institution. 50 % (n = 57) exhibited a TP in side branches of the superficial venous system. 19.3 % (n = 22) showed a TP of the great saphenous vein (GSV) of the cal

Endovenous laser treatment (EVLT) has become a valuable and safe option in the treatment of varicose veins. Although long-term results are lacking, most patients seem to benefit in the short-term from EVLT. Reported postoperative complications are limited, consisting usually of pain, ecchymosis, induration, phlebitis, or spot skin burn injuries. The most feared complication is an extension of the saphenous thrombus into the femoral vein, with possible pulmonary embolism. Here we report a septic thrombophlebitis after EVLT resulting in a phlegmonous infection of the whole leg that was treated b

STUDY DESIGN: Resident's case problem.
BACKGROUND: A 21-year-old healthy athletic male military cadet with complaint of worsening diffuse left knee pain was evaluated 4 days after onset. The knee pain began 2 hours after completing a long car trip, worsened over the subsequent 3 days, and became almost unbearable during the return trip. The patient reported constant pain, limited knee motion, and difficulty ambulating. In addition, he was unable to perform physical military training or attend academic classes due to the severe left knee pain. Past medical history revealed a mild left lateral

Mondor's disease is a rare entity characterised by thrombophlebitis of the subcutaneous veins of the anterolateral thoraco-abdominal wall. The condition is usually benign and self-limiting. We report on a case of an inguinal localization of the disease, occurring on a dilated superficial epigastric vein acting as a collateral pathway due to a left ilio-femoral venous obstruction. The patient was referred to our department with a diagnosis of strangulated Spigelian hernia. General physical examination and ultrasonographic studies ruled out a complicated abdominal hernia and the presence of mali

STUDY DESIGN: Case report.
OBJECTIVE: To present a previously undescribed complication of bone cement use during spinal surgery.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Surgical cement reaching the circulation is a frequently described complication. The placement of caval vein filters is a routine measure in specific patients to prevent thrombotic material, usually from deep venous thrombosis in the lower extremities, from reaching the pulmonary circulation. A case of bone cement getting trapped in the caval filter rendering it unremovable has not been published.
METHODS: A 66-year-old patient underwen

A young woman was admitted to hospital with suspected pyelonephritis. Due to prolonged fever, further investigations were done and showed a thrombosis in her femoral vein; X-ray and lung scintigraphy revealed a pulmonary embolism. Blood tests showed lymphocytosis, and a primary cytamegalovirus (CMV) infection was confirmed by serology and PCR. The patient was a smoker and obese and was taking oral contraceptives; a factor V Leiden mutation was also found. Deep-vein thrombosis is a rare but severe complication of a primary CMV infection that is also seen in immunocompetent persons.

Thrombocytopenia is a potential complication of heparin therapy. There are two forms of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT). Type-I HIT is characterized by a mild decrease in platelet count that occurs within the first 2-4 days after heparin initiation. The platelet count often returns to normal without stop heparin treatment. The mechanism of thrombocytopenia appears to be due to a direct effect of heparin on platelet activation. The second form (type-II) is an immune-mediated disorder characterized by severe thrombocytopenia, which may include both arterial and venous thrombosis. We prese

This study compares the development of reflux, recanalization, and clinical outcomes of patients with femoral-popliteal and iliofemoral deep venous thrombosis (DVT). Emphasis is placed on the relationship between early lysis of clot through thrombolysis and the development of reflux and post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS) for iliofemoral patients. A retrospective chart review was conducted of 27 femoral-popliteal DVT limbs and 11 iliofemoral DVT limbs with average follow-up of 2.3 and 2.1 years, respectively. Rates of recanalization, development of reflux, and post-thrombotic syndrome were recorded

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the long-term impact of iliofemoral thrombosis (I-FDVT) on walking capacity, venous hemodynamic status, CEAP class, venous clinical severity, and quality of life, and determined the prevalence of venous claudication.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: All patients with prior I-FDVT, assessed at our institution since 1990, were called for follow-up. Those with walking impairment due to arterial disease (ABI < 1.0 postexercise) or unrelated causes and those thrombectomized or thrombolyzed were excluded; 39 patients (22-83 years, median 46 years) were included. Median follow-up was 5

Prophylactic measures carried out in 32,400 patients permitted to decrease significantly the rate of thrombosis of lower extremities deep veins (to 2.2%). Use of standard and low-molecular heparin led to a similar rate of thrombus formation (2.4 and 2.0%), but the number of hemorrhagic complications in use of the later decreased (3.8 and 0.6%, respectively). Among 902 inpatients with thrombosis, lesion of distal segment of the lower extremities venous bed was revealed in 25.5%, femoral-popliteal - in 43.3%, ileofemoral - in 31.2% patients. Floppy emboli-dangerous thromboses were diagnosed in 1
