Study on the Analysis of Gender Trends Among the First Authors of Publications on Budd-Chiari Syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) is primarily a disease of hepatic vein blockage, which involves a backflow of blood to the liver. Although there have been many causes linked to this disease, most commonly, it occurs due to hypercoagulable states and blood disorders. In recent times, there has been a fast spread of knowledge regarding early diagnosis and various treatment modalities, which has enabled the prevention of mortality in most cases. This has primarily spread through research articles published in various journals. Thus, the article aims to compare the gender trend ratios to

A 27-Year-Old Female With JAK2 Mutation: A Case of Budd-Chiari Syndrome Secondary to Prolonged Oral Contraceptive Pill Use.

Individuals with Philadelphia chromosome-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) such as polycythemia vera and essential thrombocythemia (ET) demonstrate an increased thrombotic risk associated with JAK2 mutations. Physicians must take heed when treating these patients, to mitigate this pro-thrombotic state as much as possible. Failure to do so, or exacerbating the state, can lead to dire consequences. We present the case of a 27-year-old female with a history of ulcerative colitis (UC) and ET, currently taking estrogen-containing oral contraceptive pills (OCPs). She presented to the emer

Budd-Chiari Syndrome Associated With Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia, Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura, and Lupus Nephritis: A Case Report.

Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) is a scarce but severe condition characterized by the obstruction of the hepatic veins, liver congestion, and consequent damage. This series brings up one unusual presentation of BCS associated with autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA), immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), and lupus nephritis (LN), which collectively complicate the clinical scenario. This is a 19-year-old woman who was admitted for abdominal pain, hepatomegaly, ascites, and jaundice. Her history included the diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus. Laboratory findings revealed hemolytic anemia, thr

Effect of TIPS insertion on waitlist mortality and access to liver transplantation in Budd-Chiari syndrome.

The impact of TIPS on waitlist mortality and liver transplantation (LT) urgency in patients with Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) remains unclear. We analyzed patients with BCS listed for LT in the UNOS database (2002-2024) to assess TIPS's impact on waitlist mortality and LT access through competing-risk analysis. We compared trends across 2 phases: phase 1 (2002-2011) and phase 2 (2012-2024). Of 815 patients with BCS, 263 (32.3%) received TIPS at listing. TIPS group had lower MELD-Na scores (20 vs. 22, p < 0.01), milder ascites ( p = 0.01), and fewer Status 1 patients (those at risk of imminent de

Imaging findings of Budd-Chiari syndrome caused by intravenous leiomyomatosis: a case report.

Intravenous leiomyomatosis (IVL) is a rare gynecological-related tumor. It can invade and extend in the blood vessel and eventually involve the cardiac cavity or even the pulmonary artery. IVL generally does not adhere to the vein wall and infrequently leads to the manifestation of Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS). In this case report, the presence of a sizable tumor obstructed the second hepatic portal, impeding the return flow of the hepatic veins, thereby precipitating the development of BCS. The presence of collateral veins and dilation of the accessory hepatic vein were identified through compu

Cardiovascular Manifestations in Behçet's Disease.

Cardiovascular involvement in Behçet's disease (BD) is considerably related to morbidity and mortality. However, the cardiovascular manifestation is sometimes difficult to distinguish from those of other causes. The suspicion of BD and proper treatment is pivotal in the management of BD. Histology demonstrates perivasculitis. Neutrophil seems to play an important role in the inflammation of BD. It is thought that inflammation causes venous thrombosis and arterial aneurysm. Characteristically, BD involves both arteries and veins of variable size in any region. Venous thrombosis needs immunosupp

Hepatocellular carcinoma as a complication of chronic Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) in a child.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is an extremely rare long-term complication of Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) which may occur due to long-term venous congestion causing fibrosis, cirrhosis and subsequent hepatocellular dysplasia or anaplasia. This complication is even rarer in paediatric BCS and warrants early diagnosis for a favourable prognosis. Benign regenerative nodules seen with BCS are difficult to differentiate from malignant nodular lesion of HCC, thereby making serial imaging less sensitive for early diagnosis of HCC in BCS. Surveillance guidelines like adults do not exist in monitoring c

[Budd-Chiari syndrome and JAK2 gene mutation].

Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) is a rare vascular disorder characterized by obstruction of hepatic venous outflow, culminating in elevated hepatic and portal venous pressure. BCS is associated with myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN) in 40% of cases, which is significantly higher than the rate observed in other venous thrombotic conditions, and suggests that MPN may contribute to the etiology of BCS. In particular, the JAK2 V617F mutation has recently attracted substantial attention, given its profound association with thrombogenesis, mechanically implicated through endothelial damage, increased bl

Liver Transplantation for Budd-Chiari Syndrome From Myeloproliferative Neoplasms - Management and Long-Term Results.

Myeloproliferative neoplasms can cause primary Budd-Chiari-Syndrome with acute or chronic liver failure necessitating liver transplantation. However, preventing the recurrence remains challenging and the need for post-transplant anticoagulant and cytoreductive treatment is not sufficiently clear. We analyzed the treatment regimens for all patients who presented to our department with PBCS from MPN between 2004 and 2021. Eight patients underwent liver transplantation - 6 of them due to an acute liver failure. Post-transplant, all patients received anticoagulant and 7 patients cytoreductive medi

Point-of-care ultrasound in the diagnosis and treatment of Budd-Chiari syndrome: A rare case report and literature review.

Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) is a life-threatening disease characterized by the partial or complete obstruction of hepatic venous outflow anywhere from the liver to the heart. In China, secondary BCS is rare. We present a case of secondary BCS caused by compression of the suprahepatic inferior vena cava (IVC), mainly due to local bile accumulation in the caudate lobe of the liver. This case highlights the scarcity of secondary BCS worldwide and the importance of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) in the diagnosis and treatment, especially in critical and comatose patients. Prompt diagnosis and rec

Interventions in Budd-Chiari syndrome: an updated review.

Budd Chiari syndrome is a potentially treatable disease, and imaging is the key to its diagnosis. Clinical presentations may vary, ranging from asymptomatic to fulminant disease. Subacute BCS is the most common type encountered in clinical practice, characterized by ascites, hepatosplenomegaly, dilated abdominal wall veins, and varicosities in the lower limb and scrotum. While hepatic vein thrombosis is the leading cause in the West, membranous and short segmental occlusion are predominant in the Asian populations. These geographical variations have an impact on the treatment algorithm in mana

Systemic Amyloidosis Presenting as Budd-Chiari Syndrome: A Case Report.

Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) is characterized by hepatic venous outflow tract obstruction and is commonly associated with an underlying hypercoagulable state. Systemic amyloidosis is a disorder characterized by systemic deposition of misfolded proteins leading to end organ damage. Amyloidosis is commonly associated with coagulation abnormalities, mainly leading to increased bleeding diathesis. Here, we report a case of amyloid light chain (AL) amyloidosis presenting as BCS. A 40-year-old man presented with abdominal distension along with anorexia and weight loss. On evaluation, he had severe hyp

A machine learning algorithm for the detection of paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria (PNH) in UK primary care electronic health records.

BACKGROUND: Paroxysmal Nocturnal Haemoglobinuria (PNH) is an ultra-rare, acquired disorder that is challenging to diagnose due to varied symptoms, heterogeneous patient presentations, and lack of awareness among healthcare professionals. This leads to frequent misdiagnosis and delays in diagnosis. This study evaluated the feasibility of a machine learning model to identify undiagnosed PNH patients using structured electronic health records. METHODS: The study used data from the Optimum Patient Care Research Database, which contains electronic health records from general practitioner (GP) prac

Revealing an Exceptional Case of Budd-Chiari Syndrome.

Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) is a rare disorder characterized by hepatic venous outflow obstruction, leading to substantial effects, which include liver congestion, ascites, and liver failure. This is an unusual but very important form of secondary BCS caused by extraluminal compression from structures such as abscesses, tumors, or cysts. This case study exemplifies a 46-year-old female with no previous medical history who developed BCS due to the encasement of the IVC and hepatic veins secondary to a hydatid cyst, which is an uncommon presentation. Distension, ascites, and pain in the abdomen a
