Endovascular retrieval of bone cement entrapped in an inferior vena cava filter after percutaneous vertebroplasty: a case report.

Percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) is widely used to treat osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures, however, bone cement leakage may enter the venous system and cause potentially serious embolic complications. Entrapment of migrated bone cement within an inferior vena cava filter (IVCF) is rare and may pose substantial technical challenges during filter retrieval. We report the case of a 67-year-old woman with bilateral deep vein thrombosis who underwent placement of a Denali retrievable IVCF after thrombus progression while receiving a nonstandard initial rivaroxaban regimen selected beca

Non-Contrast MR Pulmonary Angiogram in the diagnosis of Acute Pulmonary Thromboembolism in Chronic Kidney Disease - Preventing Insult to Injury.

Computed tomography pulmonary angiography (CTPA) remains the imaging modality of choice for diagnosing acute pulmonary thrombo-embolism (PTE). However, the evaluation of kidney function should be a mandatory step prior to the administration of any contrast media, as iodinated contrast requires careful risk stratification in patients with pre-existing kidney impairment. We present a 72-year-old male with stage G4 chronic kidney disease (CKD), obesity, diabetes and hypertension with history of acute worsening of dyspnoea. Clinical findings, which included tachycardia, hypoxia and a new diagnosis

Superficial vein thrombosis: A risk-based guide for general practice.

BACKGROUND: Superficial vein thrombosis (SVT) is a common presentation in general practice, often appearing as a tender, cord-like swelling along a superficial vein. Although usually self-limiting, SVT may extend into the deep venous system or embolise, increasing the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism. Given its overlap with venous thromboembolism (VTE), general practitioners must recognise and assess higher-risk cases. OBJECTIVE: This article outlines a practical, risk-based approach to SVT, drawing on contemporary guidelines to guide investigation, anticoagulation and

Complete Resolution of Unprovoked Left Renal Vein Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism Associated With Severe Iron Deficiency Anemia: A Five-Year Follow-Up Case Report and Dual-Energy CT Appraisal.

Combined renal vein thrombosis (RVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) in young adults without nephrotic syndrome, malignancy, or an identified major thrombophilia is uncommon. Severe iron deficiency anemia (IDA) has been associated with increased thrombotic risk, although a causal relationship cannot be established from an individual case. A 21-year-old male patient presented with flank and chest pain. Diagnostic workup confirmed acute left RVT and an acute embolism of the posterior basal segmental artery of the right lower lobe with pulmonary infarction, concurrent with profound microcytic IDA (he

Intravascular ultrasound-guided retrieval of a fish bone embedded in the inferior vena cava: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Intravascular migration of ingested fish bones is an exceptionally rare complication that may result in thrombosis or embolic events. We report a case of inferior vena cava thrombosis caused by fish bone migration successfully managed by IVUS-guided endovascular retrieval. CASE PRESENTATION: A 70-year-old woman with stage IV cholangiocarcinoma presented with night sweats, chills, and abdominal pain. Contrast-enhanced CT demonstrated focal inferior vena cava thrombosis containing a linear hyperdense foreign body extending into a renal vein, associated with inflammatory changes adja

Conspecific proximity alters crabs' attention to novel visual stimuli.

The ability to prioritize relevant stimuli over distracting ones is essential for adaptive behavior, particularly in species with limited sensory systems. In the mudflat crab Neohelice granulata, a moving object on the ground (dummy) can elicit either avoidance or pursuit, indicating that the same stimulus may be interpreted as predator or prey. Previous studies have shown that the probability of these opposite responses depends on both stimulus features (e.g. size, speed) and intrinsic animal attributes (e.g. sex, hunger level). Here, we investigated how social context - a factor independent

Association of Age With Adverse Events After Pelvic Organ Prolapse Surgery.

IMPORTANCE: When treating pelvic organ prolapse (POP) through surgery, age may factor into joint decision making for surgeons and patients. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine if 30-day perioperative outcomes after POP surgery vary by age. STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective cohort study of women who underwent surgery for POP using the 2011-2022 American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database. Composite rates of adverse events were categorized as major complications (deep/organ space surgical site infection [SSI], reintubation, renal

Retrograde Intramedullary Nailing Versus Locked Plating for Periprosthetic Distal Femur Fractures: A Propensity-matched Cohort from TriNetX.

INTRODUCTION: Periprosthetic distal femur fractures (PDFF) after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) are increasing with the growth of arthroplasty volume and longevity of implants; reported incidences for primary TKA range from ~0.3% to 2.5%, underscoring a clinically meaningful burden. Comparative data suggest both retrograde intramedullary nailing (RIMN) and locked plating (LP) achieve acceptable union with broadly similar complication profiles, but uncertainty persists regarding construct-specific trade-offs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective propensity-matched cohort study wi

Early Use and Outcomes of Polydioxanone Mesh in Implant-based Breast Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: As the diagnosis of breast cancer has increased during the past 2 decades, so too has the number of resection procedures, including mastectomies. Of the available reconstructive options postmastectomy, implant-based breast reconstruction (IBBR) predominates. Biologic scaffolds, such as human acellular dermal matrices, are routinely used to support tissue expanders and implants. However, human acellular dermal matrices have several limitations, including high infection rates, high cost, and supply concerns. Synthetic scaffolds address some of these concerns, though they differ signi

Failed Retrieval of an Inferior Vena Cava Filter.

Inferior vena cava (IVC) filters are devices used to lower the risk of critical pulmonary embolisms in patients with current deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or a high risk of developing such. These devices are used especially when there are contraindications to anticoagulants or when conservative therapy has failed. Typically, IVC filters are temporary and can be retrieved upon improvement in the patient's clotting status.  This case presents a 75-year-old female whose IVC filter retrieval failed. Once cleared by both cardiology and orthopedics, the decision was made to retrieve the IVC filter. Fir

Left-Sided Portal Hypertension Induced by Splenic Arteriovenous Malformation: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Left-sided portal hypertension (LSPH) is a rare condition that occurs when the splenic vein pressure elevated, which can lead to gastric varices, without abnormalities of hepatic function or esophageal varices. The main causes of LSPH are splenic vein compression, stenosis, and thrombosis. However, no cases of LSPH resulting from vascular malformation have been reported. In this case report, we describe our experience of a patient with LSPH caused by a splenic vein malformation. CASE REPORT The patient was a 53-year-old man who reported having melena for 2 weeks. Thromboembolic adverse events associated with TPO-RA in ITP treatment: a pharmacovigilance analysis of the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System.

BACKGROUND: Thrombopoietin receptor agonists (TPO-RA) are widely used for immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), but their post-marketing thromboembolic safety profiles and onset patterns remain incompletely characterized. METHODS: FAERS reports from January 2009 to December 2024 were cleaned to remove duplicates and non-suspected roles, yielding 2,092 unique thromboembolic AE cases. TPO-RA exposure was identified by generic and brand names. Disproportionality analyses employed reporting odds ratio (ROR), proportional reporting ratio (PRR), and Bayesian confidence propagation neural network (BCPNN).

Successful Bridging to Rituximab With Plasma Exchange in a Pediatric Patient With Severe Lupus Nephritis.

We report a case of a 14-year-old girl diagnosed with class IV-G (A) lupus nephritis (LN), presenting with severe clinical manifestations, including nephrotic syndrome, acute kidney injury, and life-threatening hyperkalemia. The condition was managed with early initiation of plasma exchange (PE), followed by a combination of immunosuppressive therapies: high-dose corticosteroids, mycophenolate mofetil, rituximab, tacrolimus, and hydroxychloroquine. PE was promptly introduced after methylprednisolone pulse therapy to reduce circulating pathogenic autoantibodies and mitigate renal inflammation.

Association of body mass index and length of stay in patients undergoing minimally invasive surgery for uterine cancer: a National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) study.

OBJECTIVE: Body mass index (BMI) has been associated with length of stay and post-operative complications; however, minimally invasive surgery has been proposed to mitigate this. Using real-world data of patients undergoing minimally invasive surgery for uterine cancer, we investigated the association between BMI and length of stay. Among patients discharged the same day, we explored post-operative complications associated with BMI. METHODS: This was a National Surgical Quality Improvement Program retrospective cohort study including patients who underwent minimally invasive surgery for uteri

Anticoagulant outcomes in managing tumor thrombus: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Tumor thrombus (TT), defined as intravascular extension of malignant tissue, is a distinct manifestation of cancer-associated thrombosis driven by malignant vascular invasion rather than fibrin-rich clot. Despite limited evidence, anticoagulant therapy is frequently prescribed empirically. This systematic review synthesized available data on the effectiveness and safety of anticoagulation in adults with solid tumor-associated TT. METHODS: A PRISMA (2020) compliant systematic review (PROSPERO-registered) was conducted using PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, and CENTRAL through September 2025

Non-Cuffed Hemodialysis Catheter-Related Septic Thrombophlebitis of the Internal Jugular Vein Presenting With Recurrent Bacteremia and Septic Pulmonary Embolism.

BACKGROUND: Central venous catheter is indispensable to urgent start and unplanned hemodialysis. Central venous catheters are prone to infectious complications like catheter related blood stream infection (CRBSI) and malfunction. Catheter-related septic thrombophlebitis is a serious, yet underrecognized complication of CRBSI. It often presents as persistent or recurrent bacteremia and septic pulmonary embolism. CASE REPORT: In this case report, we describe the case of an elderly woman on hemodialysis who presented with recurrent CRBSI and septic pulmonary embolism due to a right internal jugu

Nonextremity thrombosis sequelae in children: screening, diagnosis, and management.

Nonextremity thromboses constitute approximately 40% of pediatric venous thromboembolism and are associated with significant organ-specific morbidity. These events may lead to chronic complications such as postpulmonary embolism syndrome after pulmonary embolism, neurocognitive impairment following cerebral sinus venous thrombosis, portal hypertension after portal vein thrombosis, and hypertension or chronic kidney disease following renal vein thrombosis. Despite their clinical relevance, the epidemiology, natural history, and optimal management of these sequelae remain incompletely defined in

Short-Term Safety and Healthcare Utilization Following Intragastric Balloon Placement in Patients With and Without Diabetes Mellitus: A Propensity-Matched Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Intragastric balloon (IGB) therapy is a minimally invasive endoscopic intervention for weight reduction in patients with Class I-II obesity and in lower BMI patients with obesity-related comorbidities such as diabetes mellitus. Diabetes mellitus is associated with vascular complications, increased susceptibility to infection and delayed gastric emptying, underscoring the need to evaluate procedural safety and device tolerance in this population. However, evidence regarding short-term safety in this higher-risk population remains limited. This study aims to compare 30-day safety out

Development and internal validation of a clinical prediction model for venous thromboembolism in patients with renal insufficiency.

Renal insufficiency (RI) patients have an increased risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE), but validated risk assessment models tailored to this population are scarce. We conducted this study to provide a personalized VTE risk assessment for patients with RI. A total of 698 patients with RI hospitalized at the First Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University from January 2022 to December 2023 were included in the study, including 142 with VTE and 556 without. Multiple imputation techniques and the Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique were used to address the missing data and class i
