Objectives Pelvic vein embolisation is increasing in venous practice for the treatment of conditions associated with pelvic venous reflux. In July 2014, we introduced a local anaesthetic "walk-in walk-out" pelvic vein embolisation service situated in a vein clinic, remote from a hospital. Methods Prospective audit of all patients undergoing pelvic vein embolisation for pelvic venous reflux. All patients had serum urea and electrolytes tested before procedure. Embolisation coils used were interlock embolisation coils (Boston Scientific, USA) as they can be repositioned after deployment and befo

Vulvar varicosities are often asymptomatic, and they may be associated with varicose veins of the lower extremity. Also, they may be a part of pelvic congestion syndrome and usually occur during pregnancy. We present a case of a huge isolated and disfiguring vulvar varicosities in a non-pregnant women managed successfully by combination of surgery and sclerotherapy.

Varicose veins in the vulvar and peri-vulvar area are seen in 4% of women and most commonly seen during pregnancy. It is thought to be as a direct result of the presence of ovarian and pelvic varicosities. Diagnostic modalities used in the investigation of this condition included pelvic ultrasound, computed venography, magnetic resonance venography and catheter-directed venography. The treatment options in the past were hysterectomy and/or ligation of ovarian veins by open or laparoscopic approach. Modern techniques involve embolization of the varicosity via radiological techniques. In this ca

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of coil embolization of the insufficient ovarian vein (IOV) on varices of the lower limb (VLL).
METHOD: From December 2005 until May 2008, we selected all patients with phlebograms that were performed in our hospital to confirm the diagnosis of insufficiency of the ovarian vein. The CEAP (clinical, aetiological, anatomical and pathological elements) classification was used to classify the lower-limb venous disease in each patient. All patients with suspected IOV in combination with VLL underwent a phlebography. If IOV was found, coil embolization of the ovarian

In three women, aged 34, 52 and 30 years, respectively, who suffered from chronic pelvic symptoms such as a heavy feeling and abdominal pain, atypical varicose veins were observed on the medial side of the upper thighs together with varicose veins of the vulva; these are indicators of insufficiency of the pelvic veins. The symptoms were reduced following embolisation of the insufficient pelvic veins. These symptoms are also known as the pelvic congestive syndrome. The exact correlation between insufficiency of the pelvic veins and the complaints mentioned above has not yet been determined, but

Vulval varices and perivulval veins are common though often unrecognised, and pelvic pain is a common complaint, sometimes without an obvious cause, hence treatment is not always successful. An association between these two problems has long been established, and some cases of pelvic pain are clearly associated with venous pathology. Often, these patients present to the vein clinic with recurrent varicose veins, because the standard procedures have failed and the pelvic origin was not recognised. The understanding of the pathology has evolved and will be reviewed. To establish diagnosis, the c

BACKGROUND: The pelvic venous syndromes comprise a group of poorly understood disorders of the pelvic and gonadal venous circulation. The objective of this paper was to review our experience with the pelvic venous syndromes and, in the light of the current literature, make management recommendations.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-seven female patients (age range, 24 to 48 years; mean, 34 years) with symptoms of pelvic pain, dysuria, dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia, and the presence of vulval and pelvic varices were studied. Diagnosis included physical examination, Doppler scan, duplex ultrasound sca

All pregnancy varices should be treated by the "new" sigvaris elastic stockings, available since C. 1960, degressive, and of calculated compression. However, these elastic stockings are not enough in all cases, and they should in no way replace active therapy. Sclerosant injections enable the practitioner to treat varicose recidivism during the pregnancy of women already treated (by sclerotherapy or by surgery). Surgery may also be performed on the saphenous veins during pregnancy, if it is really necessary. This is rare; it should be used only in carefully-selected cases: E. Gr. saphenous thr

Twelve patients referred to a general surgeon with special interest in varicose veins were found to have vulval varices. All the patients were considered to be suffering from the pelvic congestion syndrome. Their radiological investigation by percutaneous vulval phlebography is described. It is suggested that patients with vulval varices should be examined radiologically by percutaneous vulval vein injection of contrast medium. It is postulated that pelvic vein thrombosis may precipitate the pelvic congestion syndrome. Whereas there is no established treatment of this syndrome, the radiologica
