Studies have shown that BIRC7, a new member of inhibitor of the apoptosis protein family, is expressed in fetal tissues and most solid tumors in humans. PURPOSE: The purpose was to determine whether the diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) was able to differentiate necrotic tumor or metastatic lesions from infected necrotic lesions such as abscesses and necrotic lymphadenitis in the neck.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: DWI was performed on 37 consecutive patients with 85 head and neck necrotic and cystic lesions. Histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis, also known as KIKUCHI disease is rare self-limited condition of young adults. Manifestations include enlargements of the cervical lymph nodes, sometimes with fever, and can be associated with other non-specific signs. The aetiologie of this affection is still unclear. This is a case report of a 27 year-old man who presented cervical and sus-clavicular lymphadenopathy diagnosed first as lymph nodes tuberculosis before the diagnostic of KIKUCHI disease was made.

OBJECTIVE: To study the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis (Kikuchi disease, KD).
METHODS: Histologic analysis and immunohistochemical study (EnVision method) was carried out in 46 cases of KD, 5 cases of nonspecific lymphadenitis (NLD), 5 cases of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), 5 cases of Hodgkin's lymphoma (HD), 5 cases of cat-scratch disease (CSD) and 5 cases of tuberculous lymphadenitis (TBL). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the cytologic features of Kikuchi's lymphadenitis (KL). Smears from 10 patients with histologically proven KL were reviewed. In all cases, fine-needle aspiration (FNA) was performed prior to biopsy. OBJECTIVE: To study the accuracy of fine needle aspiration (FNA) diagnosis of Kikuchi lymphadenitis (KL).
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review of all cases of FNA biopsy of lymph nodes in which KL was diagnosed or suggested. False positive cases were studied. Cases of KL diagnosed by histopathology were examined for the false negative rate of FNA diagnosis.
