Over a period of 4 years, 39 children with lymphadenitis were treated surgically; in 31 cases cervical lymph nodes were the main location. In 9 cases the lymphadenitis was caused by mycobacterial infection. Staphylococcus aureus was the most frequent causative organism of unspecific lymphadenitis (11 cases). The therapy of choice appears to be surgical treatment and medical care after operation. Especially in mycobacterial lymphadenitis, complete surgical excision of the lymph node is decisive for definitive healing. The cytologic findings in fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsies obtained from 40 primary and 18 recurrent acinic-cell carcinomas (ACC) were retrospectively analyzed. We report a case of Kikuchi's disease in a young man. It is a rare entity, described for the first time in 1972. It manifests clinically with cervical adenopathy and fever, often associated with other non-specific clinical signs. Laboratory tests are often normal. The diagnosis is established on the basis of histologic of lymph node excisional biopsy. Kikuchi's disease is likely to be misinterpreted as malignant lymphoma or systemic lupus erythematosus. HISTORY AND CLINICAL FINDINGS: Two hard, pressure-sensitive nodules developed in the lower jaw of a 22-year-old woman. After a dental cause had been excluded, she was treated for suspected tonsillitis with Ceftibuten. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate was increased to 18 mm in the first hour. Kikuchi's disease is rare necrotic histiocytosis of the lymph nodes. Since the first description in Japan in 1972 by Kikuchi, several cases have been reported. During the period April 1983 to March 1986, lymphoreticular lesions in cattle were surveyed at an Ontario abattoir. Postmortem examination of 171,157 cattle revealed macroscopic lesions in 696 animals (0.4%). The most frequent finding was abscessation of a single lymph node, a finding that was observed in 353 cases (50.7% of animals with lesions/0.2% of total slaughter).
