BACKGROUND: Podoconiosis is a Neglected Tropical Disease which leads to foot and leg swelling (lymphoedema) and, ultimately, severe disability. People suffering from podoconiosis often cannot continue their economic or social roles for prolonged periods of time and experience stigmatisation. Research points towards women being more affected by podoconiosis and podoconiosis disease management interventions being less effective for women. Women’s participation in a podoconiosis disease management intervention in northern Rwanda was the focus of this study. The benefits women experienced when tak

BACKGROUND: Effective interventions rely on understanding complex contextual aspects of care. We focused on health promotion intervention that increases on podoconiosis awareness to mitigate podoconiosis-related stigma. We applied context and implementation of complex interventions (CICI) framework to evaluate the contextual factors for an existing health promotion intervention aimed to reduce podoconiosis-related stigma in Musanze district, Rwanda. METHODS: We applied an exploratory mixed-methods design to evaluate the contextual domains, which included epidemiological, geographical, politica

Support surfaces can offer a variety of rotational therapies, including continuous lateral rotation therapy (CLRT). In both rotational therapy and manual turning, the patient is rotated along the longitudinal axis; however, with manual turning the patient's posterior surface comes off the support surface. This paper will review the literature and attempt to answer the clinical question, "Does lateral rotation/rotational therapy replace manual turns for pressure injury (PI) prevention?" A literature review was undertaken, commencing with the introduction of CLRT in 1967. English language articl

The consequence of lymphatic disruption during transplantation of solid organs remains unknown. Long-term survival after organ transplantation is limited by chronic rejection, a poorly understood process involving fibrotic remodeling and functional decline of the graft. Here, we found that transplanted human lungs and hearts with chronic rejection exhibited fibrosis distributed along dysmorphic lymphatics in areas densely concentrated with hyaluronan, an interstitial glycosaminoglycan that depends on lymphatic drainage for clearance. We illustrated similar findings in transplanted mouse lungs

BACKGROUND: Revisional surgery for cosmetic breast augmentation involves many factors like ptosis, tissue thinning, and a history of prior surgeries, which can increase the risk of reduced blood flow. There is limited research on breast vascularity in women who have undergone previous breast augmentation. This study reviews current literature on envelope-related complications in patients undergoing revisional aesthetic breast augmentation.
METHODS: Between October and December 2024, a literature review was carried out in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines, using databases such as Cochrane,

Background: Lymphedema is a debilitating condition with high morbidity, yet despite advances in management, diagnostic ambiguity and fragmented referral patterns continue to delay appropriate care. We evaluated predictors of accurate diagnosis, microsurgical reconstruction candidacy, and secondary referrals generated during consultation with a lymphatic microsurgeon to highlight the need for a coordinated model of care. Methods: A retrospective chart review was performed for all outpatient referrals for 'lymphedema' from September 2020 to September 2021. Patient demographics, diagnostics, refe

Lymphovenous anastomosis (LVA) has become an established microsurgical treatment for lymphedema, yet the hemodynamic basis for its efficacy in the lower extremity has not been rigorously examined. Most assessments of anastomotic function are performed in the supine position, where lymphatic pressure exceeds venous pressure, creating a favorable gradient for drainage. However, adults spend 16-18 h daily in upright postures, during which ankle-level venous pressure rises to 80-100 mmHg while lymphatic pressure increases only modestly. This pressure reversal raises questions about whether lower e

Introduction: Implant-based breast reconstruction is associated with an increased risk of ischemic complications, which may result in implant loss, suboptimal aesthetic outcomes, and delays in adjuvant oncological treatment. Additionally, axillary surgery carries a risk of upper-limb lymphedema. Indocyanine green (ICG) angiography enables more accurate real-time assessment of tissue perfusion than clinical evaluation alone, while axillary reverse mapping (ARM) facilitates the preservation of upper-limb lymphatics. The integration of these techniques reduces complications and improves both func

BACKGROUND: Systematic pelvic lymph node dissection (PLND) is the conventional staging procedure for early-stage endometrial cancer but is associated with substantial morbidity, particularly lower-limb lymphedema. Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is a less invasive alternative, yet real-world evidence on complications and patient-reported quality of life (QoL) remains limited.
OBJECTIVE: To compare perioperative outcomes, postoperative complications, and QoL between SLNB and PLND in low- to intermediate-risk endometrial cancer, and to determine whether surgical approach is an independent ris

Dysfunctional lymphangiogenesis is a component of several diseases with hypoxic microenvironments, including secondary lymphedema and solid malignancies. These vessels are ineffective at draining interstitial fluid, resulting in complications such as increased inflammation, slowed wound healing, and, for cancer patients, increased risk of metastasis. Current treatments to normalize vasculature have negative effects on healthy vessels and do not specifically target lymphatic endothelial cells (LECs). As hypoxia is known to change endothelial cell metabolism, exploiting LEC-specific metabolic pa

PURPOSE: This study examined the long-term effects of standard care lymphoedema treatment, delivered by cancer support centres in community-based settings, on quality of life and self-reported symptom severity among individuals with cancer-related lymphoedema (CRL).
METHODS: A single-group pre-post pragmatic study design was adopted. Survivors of cancer referred to community-based cancer support centres were recruited. Participants received a minimum of 3 standard care lymphoedema treatment sessions at the centres with a certified lymphoedema clinician at baseline (T1), 1 month (T2) and 6 mon

BACKGROUND: Surgical outcome of lymphaticovenous anastomosis (LVA) may differ between upper and lower extremity lymphedema. We aimed to compare patient-reported outcomes between upper and lower extremity lymphedema in patients who underwent LVA.
METHODS: Patients who underwent LVA between June 2018 and November 2023 were included. Lymphedema quality of life questionnaire (LYMQOL) assessments were conducted preoperatively and at 3, 6, and 12 months postoperatively. LYMQOL scores were compared between patients with upper and lower extremity lymphedema using univariable and multivariable analyse

BACKGROUND: Lipedema is a chronic condition characterized by abnormal fat accumulation, primarily in the lower extremities, affecting mostly women. Despite improvements in diagnosis and treatment, lipedema is often misdiagnosed as obesity or lymphedema. Patients with obesity and lipedema propose a distinct clinical challenge in treating both diseases. Improved recognition and understanding are necessary to enhance diagnosis and treatment outcomes.
PURPOSE OF THIS REVIEW: Lipedema is thought to be hormonally driven, often manifesting during puberty, pregnancy, or menopause. It presents as disp

BACKGROUND: Cancer-associated secondary lymphedema (CASL) commonly occurs after tumor-related lymph node dissection and radiotherapy. Nevertheless, the mechanisms of CASL remain unclear, and there are no specific molecular markers for its diagnosis and treatment.
METHODS: In this study, RNA sequencing was performed on adipose tissues from 10 normal controls and 40 patients with CASL. Differentially expressed genes were screened using two machine learning algorithms to identify potential molecular markers for CASL. Subsequently, seven machine learning algorithms were employed to develop predic

The lymphatic vessels of the skin, comprising capillaries and collecting vessels, have key roles in waste removal and immune responses, and are essential for maintaining tissue homeostasis. However, the human skin, with its three layers -- epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous fat -- contains a dense extracellular matrix rich in collagen, so that visualizing lymphatic networks in three dimensions is challenging. To address this limitation, this paper introduces three distinct methods, each tailored to specific molecules of interest and experimental objectives, for the three-dimensional visualiza
