Impact of Lymphedema on Women's Lives After Gynaecological Cancer: An Integrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Secondary Lower-Limb Lymphedema (LLL) is a frequent, progressive late effect affecting women after gynaecological cancer treatment, causing swelling due to fluid accumulation in the interstitial spaces in the lower extremities, the lower abdomen, hips and genitals. There is no consensus on how to define and quantify LLL, which makes research on treatment effect difficult. A negative relation between LLL and quality of life has been reported. AIM: To review the literature concerning the identification and impact of LLL on women's lives after gynaecological cancer, including physica

Dysfunctional adipose tissue-lymphatic crosstalk in obesity.

The lymphatic vasculature is recognized for its roles in immunity, lipid transport and fluid homeostasis, but has been ignored, until recently, for its involvement in adipose tissue metabolism, obesity and associated comorbidities. States of overnutrition, such as in obesity, are associated with impairment of lymphatic function, leading to localized lymphoedema, adipogenesis and insulin resistance. Conversely, compromised lymphatic vasculature integrity can induce adiposity and accelerate insulin resistance. Through the use of advanced 'omics' and bioinformatic technologies coupled with functi

[Skin alterations and tissue reactions in lymphedema].

Chronic lymphedema is an inflammatory disease that in addition to a typical volume increase, also leads to changes in the skin and tissues. Cysts and fistulas are a direct consequence of the increased pressure in the lymphatic vessels, while pachydermia and papillomatosis are signs of the inflammatory process in the tissues. This inflammation causes, among other things, the release of various interleukins through the activation of hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) from lymph endothelial cells, macrophages, Th1, Th2 and Th17 cells, leading to fibroadipose tissue transformation and a resulting redu

Dry Liposuction for Upper-Extremity End-Stage Lymphedema: A Step-by-Step Video of Technique.

Lymphedema is a common, debilitating condition that challenges treatment efforts. The primary aim of treatment is to debulk the affected areas, providing relief without further damaging tissues or causing undesirable cosmetic outcomes. Liposuction has become a popular treatment for end-stage extremity lymphedema, yet there is no consensus on the most effective technique. Current practices include a range of methods such as dry, wet, superwet, laser-assisted, water-assisted, and power-assisted liposuction. Dry liposuction has sparked controversy, primarily due to concerns that it might be less

Tailored personas for self-management in home-based rehabilitation for participants with lower limb lymphedema: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Lower limb lymphedema is a chronic condition characterized by lymphatic dysfunction and affects a large, increasingly prevalent patient population. While incurable, the condition can be effectively controlled through evidence-based self-management. Current researchers often emphasize universal management principles, overlooking individual variability and multifaceted patient needs, which constrain the efficacy of intervention measures. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to develop personas-fictional characters representing distinct patient subgroups-for self-management among participants with lo

Percutaneous Lymphatic Contrast-enhanced Ultrasound for Preoperative Localization in Stage 2-3 Lymphedema: A Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Lymphaticovenous anastomosis (LVA) is a crucial surgical method for treating lymphedema by reconstructing lymphatic pathways. The success and efficacy of LVA rely on accurate preoperative localization of functional lymphatic vessels. This study investigated the use of percutaneous lymphatic contrast-enhanced ultrasound (PL-CEUS) to identify and localize these vessels in patients with the International Society of Lymphology stages 2-3 before LVA. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 234 patients with 256 limbs affected by International Society of Lymphology stage 2-3 l

Macrophages recruited by implanted fibrin gels promote regeneration of injured lymphatic vessels.

Secondary lymphedema is a debilitating condition driven by impaired regeneration of lymphatic vasculature following lymphatic injury, surgical removal of lymph nodes in cancer patients, or infection. However, the extent to which collecting lymphatic vessels regenerate following injury remains unclear. Here, we employed a novel mouse model of lymphatic injury in combination with state-of-the-art lymphatic imaging to demonstrate that the implantation of an optimized fibrin gel following lymphatic vessel injury leads to the reconnection of the injured lymphatic vessel network through sprouting ly

[Research progress on the application of ultrasound technology in the diagnosis and treatment of lymphedema].

Lymphedema is a chronic progressive disease caused by abnormal development of the lymphatic system or lymphatic reflux disorder caused by congenital or acquired factors, early diagnosis and treatment of lymphedema are crucial for controlling the patient's condition. Traditional imaging methods (such as lymphoscintigraphy and magnetic resonance lymphography) have problems such as high cost, radiation exposure, or technical limitations in the diagnosis and evaluation of lymphedema. Ultrasound technology has become one of the core tools for diagnosis and treatment of lymphedema due to its advanta

Tissue Sodium Response to Complete Decongestive Therapy in Lower Extremity Lymphedema.

BACKGROUND: Lower extremity lymphedema affects a growing number of cancer survivors. Standard-of-care therapy for lymphedema is complete decongestive therapy (CDT), yet the primary outcome measurement of therapeutic efficacy is limb volume, which is relatively insensitive to both well-managed and severe disease. The primary goal of this study was to examine whether physiological sodium magnetic resonance imaging (23Na-MRI) is sensitive to the effect of CDT on leg lymphedema, and how this effect compares with the measurement reproducibility limits. METHODS AND RESULTS: Participants with lymphe

William Halsted's Radical Mastectomy Patients: A Historical Analysis Through Patient Narratives.

The radical mastectomy-a surgery pioneered by William Stewart Halsted at The Johns Hopkins Hospital-was the gold standard surgical treatment for breast cancer until the late 20th century. The procedure included the removal of the breast and lymph nodes, as well as the pectoral muscles. The medical debate surrounding the radical mastectomy is well documented in medical journals and secondary historical sources. Also well documented are Halsted's life, surgical innovations, and his long-standing struggle with addiction. Yet, the experiences of Halsted's patients who underwent this procedure rema

Sex-specific lymphatic responses to estrogen shape atherosclerosis in high-risk mice.

INTRODUCTION: Atherosclerosis, the cholesterol-driven inflammatory process underlying cardiovascular disease (CVD), remains the leading cause of death in high-income countries despite major advances in risk factor management. This underscores the urgent need for therapies that directly target plaque development and progression. Recent evidence has uncovered an important role for lymphatic vessels in cardiovascular health: by facilitating reverse cholesterol transport, lymphatics help clear excess cholesterol from arterial walls and influence atherosclerosis from its earliest stages to advanced
