Background: This study aimed to investigate the possible relationship between breast cancer-related lymphedema and central obesity, which is known to be effective in metabolic syndrome and chronic inflammation. Methods and Results: Thirty-six patients (18 lymphedemas, 18 control) enrolled in the study. There was no statistically significant difference in demographic data between the two groups except body mass index (BMI) distribution (p = 0.008). Although 50% of the patients in the study group were obese, this rate was 5.6% in the control group. Although there was a significant difference bet

Various complications from a breast cancer treatment, in the pathogenesis of which excessive tissue fibrosis plays a leading role, are a common pathology. In this study, the levels of TGF-β1, VEGFR-2, and TIMP-2 were determined by the immuno-enzyme serum analysis for patients during the long-term period after breast cancer treatment as potential markers of fibrosis. The single-center study enrolled 92 participants, which were divided into two age-matched groups: (1) 67 patients following breast cancer treatment, and (2) 25 healthy female volunteers. The intergroup analysis demonstrated that th

Breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) is a form of secondary lymphedema that is characterized by abnormal swelling of one or both arms due to the accumulation of lymph fluid in the interstitial tissue spaces, resulting from obstruction of the lymphatic vessels due to surgery insults, radiotherapy, or chemotherapy. Due to the multifactorial nature of this condition, the pathogenesis of secondary lymphedema remains unclear and the search for molecular factors associated with the condition is ongoing. This study aimed to identify serum microRNAs and adipokines associated with BCRL. Blood was co

BACKGROUND: Stewart-Treves syndrome (STS) is a lymphatic sarcoma secondary to chronic lymphedema of the extremities. Most STS patients have a history of breast cancer and have undergone radical mastectomy and postoperative radiation and chemotherapy. It usually occurs 11 to 12 years after surgery, and about 0.45% of patients are estimated to have the disease. The characteristics of STS include that it is clinically relatively rare, has a high degree of malignancy, can spread easily in the absence of timely treatment, and has low survival rate. Herein, we report a case of STS which developed 13

Background: High blood insulin levels, insulin resistance (IR), and obesity are components of metabolic syndrome (MetS). The literature has indicated a high risk of breast cancer in patients with MetS. However, no studies have been conducted evaluating the relationship between breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL), one of the most frequently encountered postbreast cancer treatment conditions, and IR. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate whether there is a relationship between BCRL and IR. Methods and Results: A total of 28 patients diagnosed with breast carcinoma were included in

BACKGROUND: Patients who have breast cancer surgery are at risk of axillary web syndrome (AWS), an under-recognized postsurgical complication which can result in shoulder morbidity and functional impairment. Emerging studies have indicated that AWS may persist beyond the first few months after surgery, although few studies have assessed the prevalence and association of AWS beyond a year after diagnosis. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence and associations for AWS in post-operative breast cancer patients up to 3 years after surgery.
METHODS: This cross sectional

BACKGROUND: Post-mastectomy pain syndrome (PMPS) is a known debilitating surgical complication. While research on prevention, risk factors, and treatments have been conducted, there remains no cohesive treatment paradigm. The aim of our study is to synthesize the existing evidence on PMPS treatment, which may facilitate the implementation of standardized, effective management strategies.
METHODS: Using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines, a comprehensive search was developed and translated for MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycIN

Stewart-Treves syndrome (STS) is an angiosarcoma that usually develop in an extremity with longstanding lymphedema. Most affected patients have a history of breast cancer treated with radical mastectomy. Here, we report a case of STS with breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) for a period of seven years. A 56-year-old woman presented with chronic lymphedema of the left arm. Nine years previously she had modified radical mastectomy for grade 2, invasive, ductal breast cancer. Upon physical examination, a tender, purplish lesion on the medial half of the affected arm was observed. The lesion s

Axillary web syndrome (AWS) is defined as a visible and palpable network of cords in the skin of the axillary cavity that are tensed by shoulder abduction following surgery for breast cancer, causing significant functional limits of the ipsilateral upper limb (UL) and pain. The purpose of this narrative review is to discuss rehabilitation approaches for greater efficacy with respect to pain and novel suggestions. AWS is a frequent complication of axillary lymphadenectomy that necessitates a thorough follow-up in the medium to long term. Physiotherapy is effective in the treatment of functional

BACKGROUND: Injuries to the upper extremity lymphatic system from cancer may require measures to prevent secondary lymphedema. Guidelines were established relating to the use of tourniquet and elective hand and upper extremity surgery. However, reports in the setting of hand surgery have indicated that prior guidelines may not be protective to the patient.
METHODS: The study systematically reviewed the current literature evaluating elective hand surgery in breast cancer patients. The authors evaluated the risk of complications, including new or worsening lymphedema and infection.

PURPOSE: Axillary web syndrome (AWS) presents as a common postsurgical complication in individuals with breast cancer. Breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) contributes to the shoulder and arm morbidity common in breast cancer survivors and often associated to cancer treatment. A paucity of literature exists evaluating the risk factors for developing AWS and the association between AWS and BCRL. The purposes of this study were (1) to identify risk factors for AWS in individuals with breast cancer, (2) to examine the association between BCRL and AWS, and (3) to determine if AWS increases the
