A Rare Neonatal Infection: Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) Orbital Cellulitis.

We present a case of orbital cellulitis as a rare cause of late-onset neonatal sepsis in a 4-week-old infant. Although ample literature describes orbital cellulitis in pediatric age groups, community-acquired orbital cellulitis as a cause of late-onset neonatal sepsis has not been well-described. We report one case of late neonatal sepsis in which orbital cellulitis and subsequent methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteremia were found. This case emphasizes the importance of early recognition of orbital cellulitis in neonates and awareness of this unique cause of sepsis.

A survey of the psychosocial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on pregnant women attending a tertiary care centre of Eastern India - a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic presented an unprecedented challenge, and, as during the SARS outbreak in 2002, there was scope of overestimation of risk by pregnant women, leading to increased fear and anxiety. The aim of this study was to assess the psychosocial impact of the pandemic on pregnant women so better-informed decisions can be taken to spread awareness and alleviate their anxieties. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study in a single tertiary care centre of Eastern India including 292 participants. The inclusion criteria were all pregnant women of any gestation

Challenges and Opportunities Associated With Drug Delivery for the Treatment of Solid Tumors.

This study was conducted to investigate overall systemic antibiotic consumption levels and specific patterns using standardized Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical/Defined Daily Dose (ATC/DDD) methodology. National Health Insurance claims data during 2008 and 2009 was used. Antibiotic prescription data was classified using the ATC system and converted into DDD. Consumption figures were presented as the number of DDD per 1,000 inhabitants per day (DID). Detailed information on indications and seasonal variations, age and institutional determinants on antibiotic consumption were also explored. Total

Diagnosis of type 2 diabetes in a patient with acute sinusitis and COVID-19 in Colombia.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, cases of acute sinusitis due to COVID-19 and even co-infections have been reported [1]. We want to discuss a case in Colombia where a patient with detected type 2 diabetes presented sinusitis and COVID-19. A 51-year-old man from Sincelejo, Sucre, consulted on May 23, 2020, with one day presenting general malaise and fever (38 °C), lumbar pain, frequent urination, polydipsia and hyperglycemia (366 mg/dl). He denied cough, travel during the last two weeksan Physical examination revealed a blood pressure of 170/110 mmHg, heart rate of 115 beats/minute, respiratory ra

Treatment of infection and inflammation associated with COVID-19, multi-drug resistant pneumonia and fungal sinusitis by nebulizing a nanosilver solution.

Solutions containing Ag0 nanoclusters, Ag+1, and higher oxidation state silver, generated from nanocrystalline silver dressings, were anti-inflammatory against porcine skin inflammation. The dressings have clinically-demonstrated broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, suggesting application of nanosilver solutions in treating pulmonary infection. Nanosilver solutions were tested for antimicrobial efficacy; against HSV-1 and SARS-CoV-2; and nebulized in rats with acute pneumonia. Patients with pneumonia (ventilated), fungal sinusitis, burns plus COVID-19, and two non-hospitalized patients with

MRI features can help to confirm a diagnosis of progressive myelomalacia, but may not be accurate in dogs lacking characteristic clinical signs at the time of imaging.

Progressive myelomalacia (PMM) is a fatal sequela of acute thoracolumbar intervertebral disc extrusion in dogs, with unpredictable onset in the days after the inciting injury. No single reliable diagnostic test is currently available. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features such as T2-weighted spinal cord hyperintensity and loss of subarachnoid signal in a half-Fourier single-shot turbo spin echo (HASTE) sequence have been associated with PMM, but are sometimes present in other dogs with severe deficits. Magnetic resonance imaging findings in 22 dogs with a clinical or histopathologic diagno

Sagittal sinus thrombosis with subarachnoid haemorrhage in a patient with COVID-19 infection.

A man in his late 50s was admitted with a 10-day history of right frontotemporal headache, left arm and leg weakness, and a sudden decline in visual acuity in the right eye. The patient had recent exposure to COVID-19 infection and tested positive for the same on admission. A CT scan of the head done on arrival demonstrated a subarachnoid haemorrhage in the right central sulcus with an underlying superior sagittal sinus thrombosis. No other known risk factors for central venous sinus thrombosis could be identified. The patient had a normal level of consciousness on admission clinically; howeve

Epidemiological Characteristics, Pathogenesis and Clinical Implications of Sinusitis in the Era of COVID-19: A Narrative Review.

Sinusitis is a common condition with various forms and different etiologies. In the era of COVID-19, a large number of studies covered the association between sinusitis and COVID-19, while others reported the impact of COVID-19 on the development of acute invasive fungal rhinosinusitis (AIFR), together with the most commonly associated predisposing factors. Fungal sinusitis, particularly AIFR, can be life-threatening. It is important to dissect this association and improve current evidence and management. Therefore, we conducted this literature review to highlight the association between COVID

How common are ear, nose and throat disorders in children with Noonan syndrome and other RASopathies?

INTRODUCTION: Noonan syndrome and related conditions (RASopathies) are known to be associated with abnormalities in many organ systems. It is our impression that few otolaryngologists are familiar with the manifestations of these syndromes and we therefore reviewed our hospital's patient cohort to identify the prevalence of ear, nose and throat disorders in these children. METHODS: We cross-referenced various hospital department databases (otolaryngology, audiology, cardiology, haematology and genetics) to try to identify as many children with Noonan and other RASopathies as possible. We then

Surge of mucormycosis during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Patients with respiratory viral infections are more likely to develop co-infections leading to increased fatality. Mucormycosis is an epidemic amidst the COVID-19 pandemic that conveys a 'double threat' to the global health fraternity. Mucormycosis is caused by the Mucorales group of fungi and exhibits acute angioinvasion generally in immunocompromised patients. The most familiar foci of infections are sinuses (39%), lungs (24%), and skin tissues (19%) where the overall dissemination occurs in 23% of cases. The mortality rate in the case of disseminated mucormycosis is found to be 96%. Symptom

Decompressive Craniectomy in the Management of Low Glasgow Coma Score Patients With Extradural Hematoma: A Review of Literature and Guidelines.

An extradural hematoma (EDH), also known as an epidural hematoma, is a collection of blood between the inner skull table and the dura mater. It is restricted by the coronal, lambdoid, and sagittal sutures, as these are dural insertions. EDH most frequently occurs in 10- to 40-year-old patients. EDH is uncommon after age 60, as dura matter adheres firmly to the inner skull table. EDH is more common among men as compared to women. EDH most commonly occurs in the temporo-frontal regions and can also be seen in the parieto-occipital, parasagittal regions, and middle and posterior fossae. An EDH co

Mucormycosis as Post Coronavirus Disease Complication.

Mucormycosis is called as black fungus, which is caused by fungus belonged to Mucorales. If this fungus, effects healthy individuals it won't cause any serious complications, but it may cause life-threatening issues when Mucorales affects individuals who have low immunity. The mortality rate of black fungus is more than 50%, and it may also range till 100% if the individual is having any preexisting or chronic disease. This was the case of a 55-year-old male patient complaint of having generalized pain in the maxillary teeth bilaterally and suffering fullness in the maxillary sinus. To check o

[Chinese experts consensus statement: diagnosis and treatment of cystic fibrosis (2023)].

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is one of the most common autosomal recessive genetic diseases in Caucasians, but CF patients in China are rare, and it was listed as the first batch of rare diseases in China in 2018. In recent years, CF has been gradually recognized in China, and the number of CF patients reported in China in the past 10 years is more than 2.5 times the total number in the previous 30 years, and the total number of CF patients is estimated to be more than 20 000. The research progress of CF gene modification has led to the innovation of CF treatment. However, the sweat test as an importa

Is low dose of liposomal amphotericin B effective in management of acute invasive fungal rhinosinusitis? Our conclusions from Al-Mowassat University Hospital, Syria: a prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Acute invasive fungal rhinosinusitis (AIFRS) is a fatal infection associated with high morbidity and mortality. Although it is a rare disease, upsurge of AIFRS was noticed during the second wave of COVID-19 disease. Early diagnosis and management is the cornerstone for good outcomes. However, management of AIFRS is challengeable especially in developing countries due to limited resources and high prices of antifungal agents. No previous studies have been conducted to evaluate the outcomes of management of AIFRS in Syria. The purpose of this study is to report the results of managem

Case report: Invasive fungal infection in a patient with a rare CVID-causing gene (TNFRSF13B) mutation undergoing AML treatment.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a complex diagnosis that puts patients at a higher risk for developing infections, particularly invasive fungal infections (IFI). Mutations in TNFRSF13B have been shown to cause dysfunction in B-cell homeostasis and differentiation, making it a risk factor for developing immunodeficiency syndromes. In this case, a male patient in his 40s presented to our emergency department (ED) with symptoms leading to a diagnosis of AML with concurrent mucormycosis of the lungs and sinuses. Targeted next generation sequencing (NGS) of the patient's bone marrow showed, among o

Immobilizing Interstitial Cardiac Fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: The alterations in the endomysium and perimysium might cause compaction and gradual mechanical compression of cardiomyocytes resulting in their immobilization. This process finally leads to severe stiffening, so that the newly formed frame around individual cardiomyocytes and their clusters hinders normal diastole, and later systole. This phenomenon is referred to as immobilizing interstitial cardiac fibrosis (IICF). Deciphering the molecular and structural elements of myocardial changes is the key to understanding the pathogenetic foundations of heart failure development. METHODS
