ST-elevation myocardial infarction in a patient with coronary artery ectasia: an enduring challenge for the interventional cardiologist.

BACKGROUND: The efficacy and tolerability of oral telithromycin 800 mg once daily for 5 vs. 10 days were assessed in patients with acute maxillary sinusitis (AMS). METHODS: Adults (n = 341) with confirmed AMS diagnosed on clinical signs and symptoms and sinus X-ray showing total opacity or air-fluid level were randomized to receive oral telithromycin for 5 days (followed by placebo for 5 days; n = 170) or 10 days (n = 171). Causative pathogens were isolated by pretreatment sinus puncture (day 1). Clinical and bacteriologic outcomes, and safety and tolerability endpoints were assessed. RESULT

Surgical management of persistent maxillary sinusitis with subtle residual symptoms following lateral sinus floor elevation: a report of three cases.

Postoperative graft infection and subsequent acute maxillary sinusitis are infrequent complications following sinus floor elevation (SFE). However, inadequate management may result in persistent infection with only subtle residual symptoms. This case study presents three patients who developed persistent subclinical graft-related infection following SFE. Patient 1 underwent staged implant placement (two implants) after lateral SFE, whereas the other two underwent simultaneous implant placement and SFE (four implants in Patient 2, two implants in Patient 3). Between 2 and 3 weeks postoperativel

Towards credible digital twins for basic and preclinical research.

Atomoxetine (Strattera(R)) is a selective norepinephrine (noradrenaline) reuptake inhibitor that is not classified as a stimulant, and is indicated for use in patients with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Atomoxetine is effective and generally well tolerated. It is significantly more effective than placebo and standard current therapy and does not differ significantly from or is noninferior to immediate-release methylphenidate; however, it is significantly less effective than the extended-release methylphenidate formulation OROS(R) methylphenidate (hereafter referred to as osm

Safety of a New Sinus Irrigation Device in Rhinosinusitis: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Puncture and lavage of the paranasal sinuses, previously the primary treatment for unresponsive acute bacterial rhinosinusitis before surgery, has been abandoned due to procedural discomfort and advancements in antibiotic efficacy and endoscopic surgery. The rise in antibiotic-resistant bacteria has renewed the interest in minimally invasive sinus lavage to both avoid aggressive surgical interventions and identify appropriate antibiotic therapy. In this article, we describe the safety and feasibility of a new device in human patients and evaluate its efficacy as a treatment before

"Very High-Grade" Pulsatile Mass of an Aberrant Internal Carotid Artery in the Nasopharyngeal Wall: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

BACKGROUND The prevalence of aberrant internal carotid artery (ICA) is extremely low in the general population. It commonly occurs in the neck. Close proximity of the pulsatile submucosal mass of the aberrant ICA to the nasopharyngeal wall is dangerous. The complications include severe or fatal hemorrhage resulting from a missed diagnosis before intervention in this area, including tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy, eustachian tube dilation, oropharynx biopsy or resection, tracheal intubation, and neck surgery. We report the case of a 66-year-old woman who had a pulsatile mass of the kinked ICA in

Maxillary sinusitis complicated by stroke.

INTRODUCTION: Neurological complications of acute sinusitis are exceptional, but potentially serious. CASE REPORT: The authors report the case of a 6-year-old diabetic girl who presented with middle cerebral artery ischemic stroke secondary to inflammatory arteritis of the left internal carotid artery in a context of bilateral acute maxillary sinusitis. MRI confirmed ischaemic stroke associated with carotid arteritis and complete obstruction of the maxillary sinuses. A favourable outcome was observed after endoscopic drainage of the sinuses associated with broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy.

Management of acute maxillary sinusitis after sinus bone grafting procedures with simultaneous dental implants placement - a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: The sinus lift was first described in 1974 and it has proven to be a predictable procedure ever since. The complications of this surgical procedure are reported in the literature to be low, and can include acute maxillary sinusitis, scattering of the grafting material into the sinus cavity, wound dehiscence and Schneiderian membrane perforations. We aimed to evaluate the rate of acute maxillary sinusitis after sinus lift procedures and the appropriate management strategies. METHODS: Between 2013 and 2015, 245 dental implants were placed in 116 patients (76 males and 40 females) wi

WITHDRAWN: Antibiotics for acute maxillary sinusitis in adults.

Currently, two separate Cochrane reviews, ‘Antibiotics for acute maxillary sinusitis in adults’ and ‘Antibiotics for clinically diagnosed acute rhinosinusitis in adults’ describe the effect of antibiotics for acute rhinosinusitis. Although both Cochrane reviews study the same condition, they look at different populations (patients in which the diagnosis was based on clinical signs and symptoms and patients in which the diagnosis was confirmed by imaging). Because of this, the conclusions are different in these Cochrane reviews. This was confusing for clinicians who needed to read both Cochrane
