Acute rhinosinusitis (ARS). Diagnosis and treatment of adults in general practice.

The idea behind this thesis is to present how ARS and especially acute maxillary sinusitis in adults is diagnosed and treated in general practice. The study extends over many years, beginning with the first survey in 1991. Based on doctors' answers, we then investigated the diagnostic values of the symptoms, signs and examinations which the doctors reported using. All patients over 18 years suspected of acute maxillary sinusitis were included consecutively and only once and, after a clinical examination with the GP, they were offered the opportunity to enter into the prospective study referr

Antibiotics for acute maxillary sinusitis in adults.

BACKGROUND: Sinusitis is one of the most common diagnoses among adults in ambulatory care, accounting for 15% to 21% of all adult outpatient antibiotic prescriptions. However, the role of antibiotics for sinusitis is controversial. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of antibiotics in adults with acute maxillary sinusitis by comparing antibiotics with placebo, antibiotics from different classes and the side effects of different treatments. SEARCH METHODS: We searched CENTRAL 2013, Issue 2, MEDLINE (1946 to March week 3, 2013), EMBASE (1974 to March 2013), SIGLE (OpenSIGLE, later OpenGrey (acce

Chloramphenicol eye drops in the treatment of conditions indicative of maxillary sinusitis.

BACKGROUND: Our own clinical experience of general practice over the last 15 years has indicated that chloramphenicol eye drops may have a favourable effect on many patients troubled by symptoms indicative of acute maxillary sinusitis. We wanted to conduct a pilot study to test whether this observation could be verified. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Treatment with chloramphenicol eye drops or systemic peroral antibiotics was tested on patients with symptoms indicative of acute maxillary sinusitis. The patients were randomised to two groups, one of which received systemic peroral antibiotics, the othe

Composite three-layer closure of oral antral communication with 10 months follow-up-a case study.

PURPOSE: We propose a 3-layer composite closure technique for an oral antral communication (OAC) while avoiding secondary donor site morbidity. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A patient had developed a 1-cm OAC after extraction of right maxillary first molar. The patient subsequently developed acute maxillary sinusitis. The patient was taken to the operating room, and a Caldwell-Luc procedure was performed. The bony window from the Caldwell-Luc was "press fit" over the bony OAC defect. Soft tissue closure was then achieved with a buccal fat pad flap and a buccal mucosal advancement flap. The patient wa

Paratesticular malignant mesothelioma - a rare case presentation.

UNLABELLED: Diabetes is a long-lasting condition of glucose metabolism caused by abnormalities in insulin secretion and effectiveness. Type 2 diabetes with persistent hyperglycemia, managed with various hypoglycemic medications, has severe adverse effects and can harm vital organs. Anti-diabetic medication from Indian traditional medicinal plants has shown no such side effects. The current study aimed to explore and assess the antidiabetic potential of terpenoid phytocompounds from two types of Gymnema sylvestre extracts. The current study utilized various analytical methods to validate anti-d

[The rationale for the efficacious puncture therapy of acute suppurative sinusitis in the children].

The objective of the present study was to estimate the clinical efficacy of local antibacterial therapy in the children presenting with sinusitis. The study included a total of 104 patients allocated to 2 groups. In one of them, the patients underwent therapeutic and diagnostic punctures of the maxillary sinuses to obtain the material for subsequent microbiological analysis and to administer antibiotics into the sinuses. The results of the study give evidence that local application of antibacterial agents in combination with mucolytic drugs is at least as efficient for the treatment of acute m

A case of massive maxillary sinus bleeding after dental implant.

In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of dental implants, and many complications may arise during implantation. In cases where an artificial tooth is implanted in the maxilla, complications such as acute maxillary sinusitis, oroantral fistula, and displacement of the dental implant to the maxillary sinus may occur due to the anatomical characteristics of the maxilla and the inexperience of providers. The authors report a case of massive maxillary sinus bleeding during dental implant that was controlled successfully by emergency surgery.
