Randomized controlled trial of 3 vs 10 days of trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole for acute maxillary sinusitis.

OBJECTIVE: To compare 14-day outcomes and relapse and recurrence rates among patients with acute maxillary sinusitis randomized to 3-day (3D) vs 10-day (10D) treatment with trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (TMP/SMX). SETTING: University-affiliated Veterans Affairs general medical and acute care clinics. PATIENTS: Consecutive patients with sinus symptoms and radiographic evidence of maxillary sinusitis (complete opacity, air-fluid level, or > or = 6 mm of mucosal thickening). Patients were excluded for antibiotic use within the past week, TMP/SMX allergy, symptoms for more than 30 days, or previ

Comparison of natural ostiotomy and antibiotic therapy in the treatment of acute maxillary sinusitis in rabbits.

The goal of this study was to compare natural ostiotomy and the administration of a systemic antibiotic in the treatment of acute maxillary sinusitis. Maxillary sinusitis was induced in 28 rabbits by blocking the natural ostium with a bone chip and by introducing 0.2 ml of a suspension of Streptococcus pneumoniae (2 x 10(9) cells/ml). The animals were divided into natural ostiotomy and antibiotic therapy groups: the natural ostiotomy group comprised 14 rabbits, in which the bone chip that blocked the natural ostium was removed; and the antibiotic therapy group comprised 14 rabbits treated with

Application of polylactic acid polymer in the treatment of acute maxillary sinusitis in rabbits.

To evaluate the therapeutic effects of topical antibiotic delivered by polylactic acid (PLA) polymer on paranasal sinusitis, we induced maxillary sinusitis in 32 New Zealand white rabbits by obstructing the maxillary sinus ostium and inoculating the sinus cavity with Streptococcus pneumoniae. The rabbits were divided into three groups: a control group (group 1) treated only by reopening the ostium, a group (group 2) treated by both reopening the ostium and injecting ampicillin (40 mg/kg/day), and a group (group 3) in which ampicillin in the PLA carrier (0.326 mg) was placed within the sinus af

[Clinical and biochemical aspects in the treatment of acute maxillary sinusitis with antioxidants].

A trial has been made of traditional versus antioxidant treatment of acute maxillary sinusitides. The patients were injected a mixture consisting of 4 ml emulsion of 10% dibunol liniment and 2 ml of 5% ascorbic acid made by dilution of 10 g dibunol in 30 ml sterile 0.5% novocaine solution. The mixture was introduced into the sinuses 2 times a day, in one of the study groups it was combined with 500,000 U of ampicillin in cases of purulent sinusitis. In catarrhal form the mixture was injected once a day without the antibiotic. Control groups received 4 ml dioxidine in a single dose after the si

The efficacy of oxymetazoline administered with a nasal bellows container and combined with oral phenoxymethyl-penicillin in the treatment of acute maxillary sinusitis.

The efficacy of a new administration form of oxymetazoline, a nasal bellows container, was investigated in two separate studies by means of a combined treatment with phenoxymethyl-penicillin for acute maxillary sinusitis. In the first study (study 1), oxymetazoline administered with a bellows (OXBE) was compared both with a placebo belows (PLBE) as well as with oxymetazoline and placebo administered with a conventional nasal spray (OXSP respective PLSP) in 73 patients. In the second study (study 2), OXBE was compared only with PLBE in 48 patients. Objective evaluation was made by comparing the

Acute maxillary sinusitis in general practice: a decision problem.

OBJECTIVE: This paper describes a qualitative analysis of a decision problem of acute maxillary sinusitis in general practice. The criteria and expected outcomes on which general practitioners (GPs) base their choice of a management strategy are presented. DESIGN: Structured open-ended interviews, all done by the first author, were transcribed, and summarized for each management strategy. These summaries were sent back to the experts for verification. PARTICIPANTS: Eight expert GPs from The Netherlands participated; all had been practising for at least three years, and had conducted postgrad

Sensitivity and specificity of diagnostic tests in acute maxillary sinusitis determined by maximum likelihood in the absence of an external standard.

This study shows how to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of test sensitivities and specificities in case of lack of an external standard, using the Expectation Maximisation (EM) algorithm. This method is used to compare four diagnostic tests in patients suspected of acute maxillary sinusitis. Data were analyzed from published studies. Antral aspiration is the test with the highest diagnostic value. The diagnostic value of a positive clinical examination (according to explicit criteria) and of a positive radiograph or ultrasound are comparable. A negative radiograph is of more diagnostic val

[The quantitative and qualitative analysis fro submandibular gland of human being.].

UNLABELLED: Clarithromycin is an orally active, advanced-generation macrolide that has been reformulated as an extended-release tablet (Biaxin) XL Filmtab allowing convenient once-daily administration. The reformulation is intended to improve patient compliance and the tolerability of the drug. Although maximum plasma clarithromycin concentrations are lower and reached later with the extended-release tablets than with the immediate-release tablets, the two formulations are bioequivalent with respect to the area under the plasma concentration-time curve. Bioequivalence is also achieved between

Loracarbef versus doxycycline in the treatment of acute bacterial maxillary sinusitis. Scandinavian Study Group.

In a double-blind, multicentre study, 662 patients with acute maxillary sinusitis were randomly assigned to receive either loracarbef 400 mg bd (332 patients) or doxycycline, 200 mg for the first dose followed by 100 mg od, (330 patients) for ten days. One hundred and sixty-eight patients in the loracarbef group and 164 in the doxycycline group were evaluable for efficacy. Streptococcus pneumoniae and/or Haemophilus influenzae were isolated from approximately 75% of patients. The clinical response rate (cure or improvement) was significantly higher for patients receiving loracarbef (98.2%) tha

[The impact of Haemophilus influenzae infections on Mexican children].

A review of Haemophilus influenzae (Hi) infections in Mexico over the past 32 years was conducted. The proportion of Hi isolates in relation to positive cultures for distinct diseases was distributed as follows for meningitis (9-69%) and for pneumonia with empyema (6-28%). There was no difference in the proportion of Hi isolation between under developed countries and the United States. In other diseases such as septic arthritis, epiglottitis, acute otitis media, acute maxillary sinusitis and in the nasopharyngeal carrier state, the information was too limited. The incidence of Hib invasive dis
