Of those patients diagnosed with generalized pustular psoriasis (GPP) in Japan, approximately 30% have a prior psoriasis vulgaris (PsV) diagnosis. Therefore, understanding factors associated with a GPP diagnosis is essential for early diagnosis of GPP in patients with PsV. This retrospective cohort study was conducted to identify associated factors for GPP diagnosis in patients with PsV. Eligible patients with two confirmed diagnoses of PsV with/without a confirmed GPP diagnosis (International Classification of Disease 10th revision codes L40.0 and L40.1, respectively) were identified from the

Allergic rhinitis is characterized by an acute or chronic inflammation of the nasal mucosa, being frequently associated with other airway conditions such as sinusitis, serous otitis media, nasal polyposis, sleep disorders and asthma in particular. Among the comorbidities of allergic rhinitis it counts asthma, being a risk factor for this disorder, in which, more than 75% of patients develop asthma (either allergic or nonallergic), whereas the patients with allergic rhinitis can be affected up to 40% by asthma. The classic symptoms for allergic rhinitis involves sneezing, nasal mucosal swelling

Maxillary sinus augmentation with a lateral approach is known to present more postoperative complications than other atrophic posterior maxilla treatment modalities because it is more invasive. These complications include infections that occur in the form of chronic or acute sinusitis. According to the literature, the frequency of these complications ranges from 3% to 5%. They can result from an inadequate management of intraoperative complications or from a poor evaluation of maxillary sinus particularities and pathology before the surgery. Therefore, the prevention of postoperative complicat

PURPOSE: Radiation treatment of sinonasal malignancies is a challenging task due to proximity to critical structures of the head and neck and skull base. Local tumor control is highly dose-dependent, but dose application is limited due to accompanying toxicity and dose constraints. To evaluate the toxicity and efficacy of combined radiation treatment with intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and carbon ion boost, we conducted a prospective phase 2 IMRT-Heidelberg Ion-Beam Therapy Sinonasal Tumors (HIT-SNT) trial.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Between 2011 and 2019, we treated 35 patients wit

BACKGROUND: Acute sinusitis is a frequent reason for primary care visits. Most patients recover within two weeks without antibiotic treatment. Despite this, about 50% of patients with acute sinusitis in Norwegian general practice are still prescribed antibiotics. We do not know the reason behind this discrepancy.
AIM: To explore the clinical decision-making process and reasons for treatment with antibiotics for acute sinusitis among Norwegian general practitioners (GPs).
METHODS: Five focus group interviews were conducted (N = 25) in different parts of Norway, including GPs of various age, g

Objective: Individuals with Pediatric Acute Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS) experience neuropsychiatric symptoms following an infection or other trigger. Although PANS is typically described as relapsing-remitting, a large community-based 2017 study revealed a range of courses. The present study examined clinical predictors of symptom persistence, measured as % days symptom-free, in this same sample. Methods: A 146-question online survey gathered histories (infections and other triggers, medical and developmental comorbidities), symptomatology, interventions, and outcomes (including sch

BACKGROUND: There is considerable variation among physicians in inappropriate antibiotic prescribing, which is hypothesized to be attributable to diagnostic uncertainty and ineffective communication. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether clinical and communication skills are associated with antibiotic prescribing for upper respiratory infections and sinusitis.
METHODS: A cohort study of 2,526 international medical graduates and 48,394 U.S. Medicare patients diagnosed by study physicians with an upper respiratory infection or sinusitis between July 2014 and November 2015 was cond

INTRODUCTION: An epidemic of opportunistic fungal infections during the second wave of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic badly affected India in 2021. Several unknown, unique factors played a role in its causation and survival outcomes, including the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. The purpose of this study was to analyse the probable underlying risk factors and to know immediate and late outcomes of opportunistic fungal infections in the unique setting of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.
METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, clinical reco

INTRODUCTION: Comorbidities, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), are common in patients with rhinosinusitis (RS). However, the link between RS and GERD has not been fully understood. This study aimed to investigate the causal relationship between GERD and acute (ARS) or chronic RS (CRS), providing references for the pathogenesis and management of RS.
METHODS: The data were obtained from the Integrative Epidemiology Unit Open GWAS project and FinnGen. A total of 972,838 individuals were included. The inverse variance-weighted (IVW) method was applied to obtain the primary results o

INTRODUCTION: Increasing evidence suggests that autoimmune disorders and their immunomodulating medications may increase the risk of rhinosinusitis compared to rhinitis.
GOAL: To investigate the association between autoimmune disorders and rhinosinusitis.
METHODS: We performed a case-control study of patients referred to West Virginia University from August 2020 to October 2022 for rhinologic complaints. Rhinosinusitis patients were diagnosed with either chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) or recurrent acute rhinosinusitis (RARS). These patients were compared to non-rhinosinusitis patients. Patient

BACKGROUND: Unlike acute rhinosinusitis (ARS) which is mostly viral in etiology, the role of viruses in chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) remains unclear. Viruses may play a role in initiation, exacerbations or perpetuate chronic inflammatory responses in the sinonasal mucosa. Research needs to characterize whether viruses are part of the normal sinonasal microbiome, colonizers or pathogenic.
METHODS: Systematic review of the English literature was conducted. Following databases were searched with an initial search conducted in November 2021 and then updated through June 2023: Ovid Medline (1946 t

The present study focused on examining the association between the SARS-CoV-2 virus, responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic, and cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT), a specific form of stroke that affects the brain's vessels and sinuses. While COVID-19 is primarily recognized for its respiratory impact, it may also affect other organs, including the brain. One notable aspect of COVID-19 is its association with coagulopathy, an abnormal condition of blood clotting. Coagulopathy may result in various complications, including neurological ones such as stroke. The study analyzed data obtained from pat

Invasive fungal infections remain a devastating and potentially deadly complication in the setting of immunocompromised patients, such as in the setting of cancer, transplants, and other immune deficiencies. Infection with dematiaceous molds remains a less common but clear and present etiology. We present here a patient with relapsed acute myeloid leukemia who was neutropenic for a prolonged period. Symptoms worsened during the hospital course, including left-sided sinus swelling, which was also noted on imaging. ENT performed a bedside endoscopy and biopsied an eschar forming in the left nasa

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Acute sinusitis can cause intraorbital complications. Although subperiosteal abscesses generally do not cause severe vision loss, rare cases of decreased vision due to central artery or vein occlusion have been reported since 2003. Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) is an eye emergency that can cause sudden loss of vision. This condition is commonly found in elderly individuals with other metabolic diseases. The authors report a case of a type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patient with CRAO due to suspected rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis (ROCM).

BACKGROUND: Orbital infections in children are commonly secondary to acute bacterial rhinosinusitis (ABRS). It is unclear whether seasonal variations can predispose to these complications mirroring acute rhinosinusitis incidence.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the incidence of ABRS as a cause of orbital infections and whether seasonality is a risk factor.
METHODS: A retrospective review of all children who presented to West Virginia University children's hospital between 2012 and 2022 were reviewed. All children with CT evidence of orbital infection were included. Date of occurrence, age, gender, a

OBJECTIVE: The present study revisited three classification systems of orbital complications of acute rhinosinusitis (ARS) (Chandler, Mortimore & Wormald, and Velasco e Cruz & Anselmo-Lima) and observed which of them presented the best clinical applicability.
METHODS: Clinical data and CT scan findings of patients with orbital infection were retrospectively collected. To compare the three classification systems, we revised and graded all CT images accordingly, and divided the patients into four groups: Eyelid cellulitis (EC), orbital cellulitis (OC), subperiosteal abscess (SA), and orbital ab
