The hidden seasonality of pharyngitis and tonsillitis: a recurring early-summer wave of unclear aetiology.

Limited studies on the seasonality of pharyngitis and tonsillitis suggest subtle but unexplained fluctuations in case numbers that deviate from patterns seen in other respiratory diagnoses. Data on weekly acute respiratory infection diagnoses from 2010-2022, provided by the Polish National Healthcare Fund, included a total of 360 million visits. Daily mean temperature and relative humidity were sourced from the Copernicus Climate Data Store. Seasonal pattern was estimated using the STL model, while the impact of temperature was calculated with SARIMAX. A recurring early-summer wave of an unspe

Pediatric Non-Cystic Fibrosis Pulmonary Nontuberculous Mycobacterium Infections: A Global Population Based Study.

BACKGROUND: Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are Mycobacterial pathogens that cause pulmonary infections among children, particularly those with underlying lung conditions or immunosuppression. Clinical presentations include chronic cough, weight loss, and fatigue. Diagnosis involves clinical assessment, radiographic imaging, and microbiological confirmation, while treatment often requires prolonged, multidrug antibiotic regimens. This study aimed to analyze the epidemiology and clinical outcomes of pulmonary NTM infections in a non-cystic fibrosis pediatric population from four distinct age

Association between gut microbiota and acute upper respiratory tract infection: a Mendelian randomization study.

Targeting specific gut microbiota (GM) species to prevent and treat acute upper respiratory tract infection (AURTI) has attracted researchers' attention, but the relationship between the two is unclear. Based on the summary data from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) on GM and five types of AURTIs (acute nasopharyngitis (common cold), acute pharyngitis, acute sinusitis, acute upper respiratory infections, and acute upper respiratory infections of multiple and unspecified sites), we performed two-sample bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) to assess the causal relationship. Through i

Obesity and risk for respiratory diseases: a Mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: No existing comprehensive Mendelian randomization studies have focused on how obesity affects respiratory diseases. METHODS: BMI and waist circumference, mainly from the UK Biobank, and 35 respiratory diseases from the FinnGen Biobank were subjected to Mendelian randomization analyses. In this study, the inverse variance weighting method was used as the predominant analysis method and was complemented by MR-Egger and weighted median methods. Horizontal pleiotropy and potential outliers were detected by employing the MR-PRESSO method. RESULTS: This study indicated that obesity ris

Treatment outcomes of acute streptococcal tonsillitis according to antibiotic treatment. A retrospective analysis of 242,366 cases treated in the community.

BACKGROUND: Acute upper respiratory infections are the most common reason for primary physician visits in the community. This study investigated whether the type of antibiotic used to treat streptococcal tonsillitis can reduce the burden by affecting the number of additional visits. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effect of different antibiotic treatments for tonsillitis on the number of additional primary physician visits and the development of infectious or inflammatory sequels. METHODS: This retrospective study included first cases of culture-confirmed streptococcal tonsillitis (n = 242,366, 55

Antibiotic Prescriptions for Respiratory Tract Viral Infections in the Colombian Population.

Antimicrobials are frequently inappropriately prescribed for the management of upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs); therefore, the frequency of antibiotic prescriptions for patients with viral URTIs was assessed in this study. A cross-sectional study, including ambulatory patients diagnosed with viral URTI, was conducted, and records of antimicrobial prescriptions were obtained. Sociodemographic, clinical (diagnostic), and pharmacological (antimicrobial) variables were assessed. Through multivariate analysis, variables associated with the use of antibiotics for viral infections were ide

Prescribing systemic steroids for acute respiratory tract infections in United States outpatient settings: A nationwide population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Evidence and guidelines do not support use of systemic steroids for acute respiratory tract infections (ARTIs), but such practice appears common. We aim to quantify such use and determine its predictors. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We conducted a cohort study based on a large United States national commercial claims database, the IBM MarketScan, to identify patients aged 18-64 years with an ARTI diagnosis (acute bronchitis, sinusitis, pharyngitis, otitis media, allergic rhinitis, influenza, pneumonia, and unspecified upper respiratory infections) recorded in ambulatory visits from 2007

Intraday effects of outdoor air pollution on acute upper and lower respiratory infections in Australian children.

Children's respiratory health are particularly vulnerable to outdoor air pollution, but evidence is lacking on the very acute effects of air pollution on the risk of acute upper respiratory infections (AURI) and acute lower respiratory infections (ALRI) in children. This study aimed to evaluate the risk of cause-specific AURI and ALRI, in children within 24 h of exposure to air pollution. We obtained data on emergency cases, including 11,091 AURI cases (acute pharyngitis, acute tonsillitis, acute obstructive laryngitis and epiglottitis, and unspecified acute upper respiratory infections) and 1

Antibiotic utilization for acute respiratory tract infections in U.S. emergency departments.

Inappropriate use of antibiotics for acute respiratory tract infections (ARTIs) has decreased in many outpatient settings. For patients presenting to U.S. emergency departments (EDs) with ARTIs, antibiotic utilization patterns are unclear. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of ED patients from 2001 to 2010 using data from the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NHAMCS). We identified patients presenting to U.S. EDs with ARTIs and calculated rates of antibiotic utilization. Diagnoses were classified as antibiotic appropriate (otitis media, sinusitis, pharyngitis, tonsilliti
