The objective of the study was the evaluation of the frequency of occurrence of acute respiratory infections among rural population from the Lublin Region, and verification of the appropriateness of the use of antibiotics in empirical first-line therapy of these diseases. The analysis covered medical records concerning 1,839 patients selected from 27 rural health centres within the period of one year (1 September 2005-31 August 2006). As many as 656 patient visits were recorded, the reasons for which were qualified by physicians as infections of the upper and lower airways. These disorders wer

PFAPA is non-hereditary syndrome characterized by periodic episodes of high fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis and cervical adenitis. It manifests usually in early childhood, especially before 5 years of age, and last for several years. Its etiology is unknown, but some recent reports suggest a dysregulation of the immune response with continuous pro-inflammatory cytokine activation and a reduced anti-inflammatory response both during and between febrile attacks. The diagnosis is clinical and it is important to exclude other entities of similar presentation with periodic fever and orofaci

BACKGROUND: With use of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and a centrifugation-enhanced viral culture method, we characterized the viruses causing acute respiratory infection in adults during an influenza season.
METHODS: During January-March 2002, nasopharyngeal wash specimens from previously healthy adults presenting with respiratory symptoms were evaluated for viral pathogens with centrifugation-enhanced viral culture and PCR.
RESULTS: The diagnoses in 266 cases included unspecified upper respiratory infection (in 142 [54%] of the cases), acute bronchitis (42 [16%]), sinusitis (23 [9%]), ph

The aim of our study was to describe the pattern of antibiotic prescribing for respiratory tract infections. Forty-four family physicians from Białystok (north-eastern Poland) filled in questionnaires regarding 1315 patients with respiratory tract infections. Antibiotics were prescribed in 803 cases (61.1%). The four principle diagnoses associated with prescribing an antibiotic were: bacterial pharyngitis/tonsillitis, acute bronchitis, unspecified bacterial superinfection and acute sinusitis for which a total of 572 antibiotic treatments were given (71.2% of all antibiotic prescriptions). BACKGROUND: Judicious use of antibiotics can slow the spread of antimicrobial resistance. However, overall patterns of antibiotic use among ambulatory patients are not well understood.
OBJECTIVE: To study patterns of outpatient antibiotic use in the United States, focusing on broad-spectrum antibiotics.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey in three 2-year periods (1991-1992, 1994-1995, and 1998-1999).
SETTING: The National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey, a nationally representative sample of community-based outpatient visits.
PATIENTS: Patients visiting community-based outpatient clinics.
