The effect of dexamethasone on reducing the frequency of endotracheal intubation and mechanical ventilation required in children with acute laryngitis and laryngeal obstruction.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric acute laryngitis and laryngeal obstruction can be severe enough to require tubes inserted into the airway and assist with breathing. Dexamethasone is commonly used to treat pediatric acute laryngitis and laryngeal obstruction, but the factors determining the need for intubation despite corticosteroid therapy remain unclear. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to determine the rate of intubation and mechanical ventilation required, identify risk factors for these needs and examine the outcomes in pediatric patients who still require intubation despite dexamethasone treatment. METHODS:

Association between early childhood infections and adolescent chronic diseases: a nationwide cohort analysis.

BACKGROUND: Early childhood infections remain major contributors to the global disease burden in children under five years of age. Beyond their acute effects, such infections may influence susceptibility to non-communicable diseases later in life. It was hypothesized that common early childhood infections are associated with an increased risk of chronic diseases during adolescence. METHODS: A 18-year, nationwide, population-based cohort study was conducted using the Korean National Health Information Database (2002-2019), including 3,942,947 children aged 0-4 years (2002-2006) at baseline who

Effective treatment with sirolimus in a 6-year-old boy with tracheal vascular malformation initially misdiagnosed as acute laryngitis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Tracheal vascular malformations are rare congenital lesions that often mimic pediatric acute laryngitis, causing misdiagnosis and delayed care-with greater challenges when caregivers decline angiography and evidence for such scenarios is scarce. Though sirolimus works for vascular malformations, its use in misdiagnosed pediatric tracheal cases is underreported, making this case novel for addressing angiography refusal and showing sirolimus-induced rapid symptom resolution to guide complex pediatric airway care. CASE PRESENTATION: A 6-year-old Han Chinese boy had 6 days of cough, w

Antibiotic Usage for Treatment of Acute Upper Respiratory Tract Infections in Children in Lithuania from 2018 to 2022.

Background/Objectives: Acute upper respiratory tract infections (URIs) are defined as inflammatory diseases of the nose, sinuses, pharynx, larynx, or trachea. They are common in children. The prescription of antibiotics for the treatment of URIs became a relevant theme in the scientific literature in recent decades. One of the most important ways to deal with increasing antimicrobial resistance is rational antibiotic therapy. This study aimed to evaluate the tendencies of antibiotic prescribing practices for Lithuanian children with URIs from 2018 to 2022. We describe how many children with UR

Comparative pathogenicity of wild-type and E3-deleted canine adenovirus type 2 in experimental canine infections.

Canine adenovirus type 2 (CAdV-2) is a major etiological agent of canine infectious respiratory disease (CIRD), responsible for acute laryngotracheitis and bronchopneumonia. In this study, we isolated and characterized three CAdV-2 strains from clinical cases in Guangxi, China. Among these, we identified a novel E3 gene variant (designated GXNN01) featuring a 9-nucleotide deletion, resulting in a 3-amino acid truncation. To access the pathogenicity of these strains, we conducted experimental infections in a canine model. All infected dogs developed transient fever (39.2-39.8 °C) and exhibited

Clinical Study of Vitamin D Levels in Hospitalized Children with Acute Respiratory Infections.

The aim of our research was to evaluate and analyze serum 25(OH) vitamin D and parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels to investigate whether vitamin D deficiency serves as a risk factor for an increased incidence of acute respiratory infections (ARI) in children. Serum PTH levels were used as an indicator of vitamin D sufficiency, as normal PTH levels require an optimal concentration of 25(OH) vitamin D. The study included 129 children, divided into five subgroups: children with acute bronchopneumonia (n = 42), acute laryngotracheitis (n = 7), acute bronchiolitis (n = 32), acute bronchitis (n = 18),

Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Supraglottis Presenting as Hoarseness.

Hoarseness is a well-known condition in primary care offices, with over 1% of primary care visits secondary to this ailment.1 The most common causes are acute laryngitis (40%), functional dysphonia (30%), benign and malignant tumors (2.2 to 30%), neurogenic factors such as vocal cord paralysis (8%), physiological aging (2%), and psychogenic factors (2.2%). Most of these cases are secondary to viral infections and do not require antibiotics on most occasions. These viral infections subside after 1 to 2 weeks, and in the case of persistent hoarseness (above 4 weeks) the American Academy of Otola

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic was characterized by mild-to-moderate disease in children and adolescents, with low incidences of severe cases and mortality. Most of the information on drug therapy in COVID-19-positive children was derived from research in adult patients. Remdesivir, an inhibitor of viral RNA polymerase, was shown to be effective in COVID-19 patients with moderate-to-severe disease. In this study, we present our experience of the use of remdesivir in pediatric patients hospitalized with COVID-19. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study was based on the early use of

Elaboration of selected respiratory system diseases in children in the pediatric hospital Bielsko-Biala In years 2015-2022.

INTRODUCTION: Respiratory tract infections in children are an interdisciplinary problem that pediatricians, allergists, laryngologists and immunologists encounter on a daily basis. In the youngest children, these diseases are caused by the structure of the respiratory tract, which is shorter and narrower than in an adult, as well as the immaturity of the immune system. Among all children under 5 years of age hospitalized due to respiratory diseases, 20% of cases are acute respiratory infections. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study is to discuss selected respiratory diseases in children aged 0-18

[Implications of total laryngectomy].

This clinical lesson describes three patients with problems after a total laryngectomy. Patient A suffered from acute tracheitis and narrowing of the tracheostoma. Patient B experienced acute dyspnea due to thick mucus plugs. Patient C had progressive symptoms of deteriorating speech and dysphagia, which resolved after dilatation of a pharyngeal stenosis. A total laryngectomy leads to definitive changes in anatomy and physiology. In case of respiratory symptoms, it is important to recognize the tracheostoma is the only entrance to the airway. Speech is generally well rehabilitated with a speec
