Fine and coarse particulate air pollution and hospital admissions for a wide range of respiratory diseases: a nationwide case-crossover study.

BACKGROUND: The associations between fine and coarse particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM2.5-10) air pollution and hospital admissions for full-spectrum respiratory diseases were rarely investigated, especially for age-specific associations. We aim to estimate the age-specific associations of short-term exposures to PM2.5 and PM2.5-10 with hospital admissions for full-spectrum respiratory diseases in China. METHODS: We conducted an individual-level case-crossover study based on a nationwide hospital-based registry including 153 hospitals across 20 provincial regions in China in 2013-20. We applie

Idiopathic Ulcerative Laryngitis (IUL): An Indian Perspective.

Idiopathic ulcerative laryngitis (IUL) is characterized by bilateral ulceration of vocal cords which is followed by a protracted course of healing. It is rarely diagnosed, with a paucity of published data in English literature. There is no published data on this topic in the Indian population. Twenty-one patients from 3 centres were prospectively evaluated for clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up. All patients underwent fibreoptic laryngoscopic evaluation and stroboscopic assessment. They were treated with supportive care and stringent follow-up. 21 patients with a median

Obesity and risk for respiratory diseases: a Mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: No existing comprehensive Mendelian randomization studies have focused on how obesity affects respiratory diseases. METHODS: BMI and waist circumference, mainly from the UK Biobank, and 35 respiratory diseases from the FinnGen Biobank were subjected to Mendelian randomization analyses. In this study, the inverse variance weighting method was used as the predominant analysis method and was complemented by MR-Egger and weighted median methods. Horizontal pleiotropy and potential outliers were detected by employing the MR-PRESSO method. RESULTS: This study indicated that obesity ris

The risk of respiratory incidents in response to the increase of ozone concentration in the ambient air, in the Silesian Voivodeship, in 2016-2017.

INTRODUCTION: Due to the high level of urbanization and industrialization, Silesian Voivodeship remains a region with the poorest quality ambient air, especially in the winter season in which alarm levels are constantly being exceeded. However, in the summertime, there are observed short-term episodes of high ozone concentrations for which their impact on the population health is poorly documented. The aim of the study was to assess the risk of daily respiratory health problems related to an increased pollutants concentration typical for photochemical smog. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In the ecolog

[Results of a prospective observational study of the effectiveness of the complex drug Homeovox in adult patients with various types of dysphonia].

UNLABELLED: The voice as the most important means of communication is of great importance in a person's life. Every year the number of specialties for which voice and speech are a key tool of professional activity increases. Diseases of the vocal apparatus reduce the ability to work, and for some people pose a threat of professional unfitness. The relevance of the study is determined not only by the significant prevalence of dysphonia, but also by the insufficient effectiveness of existing methods of treating voice disorders. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of the use

Severe spontaneous pneumomediastinum, pneumothorax and subcutaneous emphysema precipitated by pepper spray-induced acute laryngitis: a case report.

We report a patient with severe spontaneous pneumomediastinum (SPM), pneumothorax and widespread subcutaneous emphysema with acute epiglottitis after inhaling pepper spray. The effects of pepper spray, which is a lachrymatory agent, on the respiratory system have not been reported. Upper airway obstruction is not a well-described cause of SPM, with which subcutaneous emphysema and pneumothorax might coexist; thus, mechanical ventilation might be detrimental.
