Otolaryngeal and Oropharyngeal Conditions: Dysphonia.

Dysphonia is any alteration of voice quality or vocal effort that impairs communication and affects quality of life. In patients with dysphonia, voice qualities often are described as tremulous, hoarse, strained, or raspy, with altered pitch, breathiness, or vocal fatigue. Dysphonia is a sign of an underlying disease process. Up to one-third of individuals will experience dysphonia in their lifetime. The evaluation includes a history, physical examination, and, in some cases, laryngoscopy. The most common cause of dysphonia is acute laryngitis, with the majority of cases lasting fewer than 3 w

The role of imaging in the evaluation of hoarseness: A review.

Hoarseness is a common symptom indicating an abnormal change in the quality of voice and has a lifetime prevalence of around 30%. There are multiple causes of hoarseness, ranging from acute laryngitis, chronic laryngitis, laryngopharyngeal reflux, functional dysphonia due to vocal overuse or abuse, vocal cord paralysis (VCP), to various pathologies and masses in the larynx. A detailed history and thorough physical examination, and in many cases, laryngoscopy by a clinician are the initial steps in its management. Laryngoscopy should be considered if hoarseness persists for more than 2 weeks wi

Fewer non-COVID-19 respiratory tract infections and gastrointestinal infections during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For preventing the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, measures like wearing masks, social distancing, and hand hygiene played crucial roles. These measures may also have affected the expansion of other infectious diseases like respiratory tract infections (RTI) and gastro-intestinal infections (GII). Therefore, we aimed to investigate non-COVID-19 related RTI and GII during the COVID-19 pandemic. Patients with a diagnosis of an acute RTI (different locations) or acute GII documented anonymously in 994 general practitioner (GP) or 192 pediatrician practices in Germany w

COVID-19 presenting as acute epiglottitis: A case report and literature review.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) occasionally causes acute laryngitis, requiring emergency treatment. Understanding the characteristic laryngeal findings can help diagnose COVID-19 earlier, prevent worsening infection, and properly manage airway obstruction. Herein, we report the case of a 44-year-old male with acute epiglottitis likely caused by COVID-19. On presentation, chest computed tomography (CT) showed no signs of pneumonia. However, the larynx had extensive necrotic-like erosive lesions resembling those of tuberculous laryngitis. COVID-19 was diagnosed by reverse-transcription poly

Seasonal Variations in Public Inquiries into Laryngitis: An Infodemiology Study.

OBJECTIVES: Acute laryngitis is a common disease with self-limiting nature. Since the leading cause is attributed to viral infections and thus self-limiting, many affected individuals do not seek professional medical help. However, because the major symptom of hoarseness imposes a substantial burden in everyday life, it might be speculated that web-based search interest on this condition follows incidence rates, with highest peaks during winter months. The aim of this study was to evaluate global public health-information seeking behaviour on laryngitis-related search terms. METHODS: We utili

[Acute and chronic laryngitis in the subjects engaged in the voice and speech professions].

Laryngitis is one of the commonest causes of dysphonia in the subjects engaged in the voice and speech professions. This condition can be either associated with the professional activities or related to voice fatigue. It is a common practice to distinguish between acute and chronic forms of occupational laryngitis. The main factors responsible for development of both conditions include the non-observance of directions concerning the protection and hygiene of the speaking and singing voice. The present study included 478 (100%) subjects engaged in the voice and speech professions presenting wit
