Comparative pathogenicity of wild-type and E3-deleted canine adenovirus type 2 in experimental canine infections.

Canine adenovirus type 2 (CAdV-2) is a major etiological agent of canine infectious respiratory disease (CIRD), responsible for acute laryngotracheitis and bronchopneumonia. In this study, we isolated and characterized three CAdV-2 strains from clinical cases in Guangxi, China. Among these, we identified a novel E3 gene variant (designated GXNN01) featuring a 9-nucleotide deletion, resulting in a 3-amino acid truncation. To access the pathogenicity of these strains, we conducted experimental infections in a canine model. All infected dogs developed transient fever (39.2-39.8 °C) and exhibited

Clinical Study of Vitamin D Levels in Hospitalized Children with Acute Respiratory Infections.

The aim of our research was to evaluate and analyze serum 25(OH) vitamin D and parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels to investigate whether vitamin D deficiency serves as a risk factor for an increased incidence of acute respiratory infections (ARI) in children. Serum PTH levels were used as an indicator of vitamin D sufficiency, as normal PTH levels require an optimal concentration of 25(OH) vitamin D. The study included 129 children, divided into five subgroups: children with acute bronchopneumonia (n = 42), acute laryngotracheitis (n = 7), acute bronchiolitis (n = 32), acute bronchitis (n = 18),

Elaboration of selected respiratory system diseases in children in the pediatric hospital Bielsko-Biala In years 2015-2022.

INTRODUCTION: Respiratory tract infections in children are an interdisciplinary problem that pediatricians, allergists, laryngologists and immunologists encounter on a daily basis. In the youngest children, these diseases are caused by the structure of the respiratory tract, which is shorter and narrower than in an adult, as well as the immaturity of the immune system. Among all children under 5 years of age hospitalized due to respiratory diseases, 20% of cases are acute respiratory infections. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study is to discuss selected respiratory diseases in children aged 0-18

The risk of respiratory incidents in response to the increase of ozone concentration in the ambient air, in the Silesian Voivodeship, in 2016-2017.

INTRODUCTION: Due to the high level of urbanization and industrialization, Silesian Voivodeship remains a region with the poorest quality ambient air, especially in the winter season in which alarm levels are constantly being exceeded. However, in the summertime, there are observed short-term episodes of high ozone concentrations for which their impact on the population health is poorly documented. The aim of the study was to assess the risk of daily respiratory health problems related to an increased pollutants concentration typical for photochemical smog. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In the ecolog

Safety and utility of direct laryngoscopy and bronchoscopy in patients hospitalized with croup.

Acute croup is a common admitting diagnosis for pediatric patients. If a patient is not responding to medical management for presumed croup, the otolaryngology team is occasionally consulted for direct laryngoscopy and bronchoscopy (DLB) to rule out tracheitis or another airway pathology. We conducted a study to determine if inpatient DLB in acute croup is safe and efficacious and to correlate preoperative vital signs with intraoperative findings. We reviewed the charts of 521 patients with an admitting diagnosis of acute tracheitis, acute laryngotracheitis, or croup. Of this group, 18 patient

Laryngotracheal stenosis requiring emergency tracheostomy as the first manifestation of childhood-relapsing polychondritis.

Relapsing polychondritis is a rare childhood disorder of unknown etiology, characterized by inflammatory, recurrent and destructive cartilage lesions. The chondritis could be widespread and involves generally laryngeal and auricular hyaline cartilages. We described a 9 years and 4 months old girl, who presented recurrent acute laryngotracheitis and laryngotracheal stenosis, which were the first manifestations of relapsing polychondritis, and was submitted to emergency tracheostomy. She also had ear condritis and arthritis, being treated with prednisolone and methotrexate. In conclusion, we rep

Serial intralesional steroid injection combined with balloon dilation as an alternative to open repair of subglottic stenosis.

This article will describe successful use of serial balloon dilations and steroid injections to help a child with acute SGS avoid tracheotomy or major reconstructive procedures. An 11-month infant presented with subglottic ulcerations that developed after intubation for acute laryngotracheitis. Over the next 4 months, the child developed SGS, requiring three balloon dilations consisting of triamcinalone injection into the scar tissue followed by outpatient balloon dilation without intraoperative intubation. Twelve months after initial presentation and 8 months follow-up from the third and fina

Dendritic cell influx differs between the subglottic and glottic mucosae during acute laryngotracheitis induced by a broad spectrum of stimuli.

Clinically, the subglottic and glottic mucosae may react differently, eg, during acute laryngotracheitis. In healthy rats, we showed previously that the composition of the mucosal immune system of the larynx also differs between these areas. Neutrophils, lymphocytes, and dendritic cells (DCs) are part of this mucosal immune system. In particular, DCs occupy a key function. They migrate into inflamed mucosae during the early phase of the immune response, which is normally characterized by an influx of neutrophils. Thus, they help to overcome the time lag between the innate and the adaptive immu

Acute laryngotracheitis in the rat induced by Sendai virus: the influx of six different types of immunocompetent cells into the laryngeal mucosa differs strongly between the subglottic and the glottic compartment.

OBJECTIVES: Acute laryngotracheitis is a disease in which mainly the subglottic area is infected, whereas adjacent parts of the larynx, especially the narrow glottic fold, remain unaffected. The reason for the difference between these two directly adjacent regions is unknown. Therefore, in the present study the influx of dendritic cells, neutrophils, T and B lymphocytes, natural killer cells, and macrophages into the mucosa of different laryngeal compartments was investigated after Sendai virus infection in the rat. The aims were to study both the influx of immunocompetent cells and the adhesi
