Differences in influenza and pneumococcal vaccination coverage according to chronic respiratory diseases during the COVID-19 pandemic in France: a nationwide cohort study using the French national health data system.

BACKGROUND: Chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs) are major contributors to morbidity and mortality globally. Exacerbations, often triggered by pathogens including Streptococcus pneumoniae and influenza virus, significantly worsen outcomes. French and international guidelines recommend vaccination against pneumococcal disease and influenza for at-risk adults. Previous studies found low pneumococcal vaccine uptake in France and other countries. The COVARISQ-2 study reassessed pneumococcal and influenza vaccination coverage during the 2013-2020 period and the 2020-2021 season, respectively, aamong

Wastewater surveillance for SARS-CoV-2 and influenza A: A complementary tool for monitoring community transmission and variant dynamics.

Clinical surveillance for respiratory viruses such as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and influenza A underestimates community transmission due to limited detection of asymptomatic infections and high resource requirements. Wastewater-based surveillance (WWS) provides a cost-effective, noninvasive approach for population-level monitoring. This study evaluated the concordance between wastewater and clinical surveillance for detection and genetic characterization of SARS-CoV-2 and influenza A. Fortnightly wastewater samples (n = 649) were collected from March 2022 to

Clinical Features and Outcomes of Acute Myocarditis in Patients with Swab-Confirmed Respiratory Viral Pathogens.

BACKGROUND: Acute myocarditis (AM) is an inflammatory cardiac condition with heterogeneous clinical manifestations that often overlap with other acute cardiac syndromes, making diagnosis challenging. OBJECTIVES: To characterize the prevalence, clinical profile, and outcomes of AM patients with respiratory viral pathogen detection on nasopharyngeal swabs at admission. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed all patients admitted to the Sheba Medical Center with confirmed AM between January 2005 and December 2020. Diagnosis was based on compatible presentation, elevated cardiac biomarkers, and su

Respiratory syncytial virus as an independent driver of a subsequent influenza epidemic in Berlin before and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

OBJECTIVES: Following the withdrawal of non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPI) implemented during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the resurgence of respiratory viral infections in children deviated from established pre-pandemic seasonal patterns. We aimed to use the disruption in the seasonality of respiratory viral infections caused by NPI measures to identify key drivers of seasonality before and since the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: We applied a Bayesian model to crossover-predict the incidence of infections with human metapneumovirus, influenza viruses, and respiratory s

Risk and Protective Factors for Infection, Severe Disease, and Mortality in Epidemic Respiratory Viruses.

The post-COVID pandemic era has witnessed a concerning resurgence of respiratory viruses, driving a global increase in acute respiratory infections. This trend may stem from relaxed non-pharmaceutical interventions, waning herd immunity, immunological imprinting limiting heterosubtypic protection, or viral antigenic evolution. This review aims to identify and characterize risk and protective factors associated with infection, hospitalization, severe illness, and mortality, while elucidating the drivers of the rising incidence of respiratory virus infections post-pandemic. Evidence on SARS-CoV-

Long-Term Dynamics of Pediatric Respiratory Pathogens Before, During, and After the COVID-19 Pandemic: Evidence From Nine Years of Surveillance in the Netherlands (2015-2023).

Respiratory tract infections (RTIs) are common in children and are caused by viral and bacterial pathogens. However, seasonal variability and limited age-specific data obscure a clear understanding of their epidemiology and clinical outcomes. The annual incidence of respiratory pathogens, co-infections, and disease burden was retrospectively investigated. Clinical data and respiratory swabs were collected from children < 18 years who presented with respiratory symptoms at a Dutch Emergency Room between 2015 and 2023. Swabs were tested for 20 common pathogens using MLPA technology. In total, 35

Epidemiological indicators of accidental laboratory-origin outbreaks.

Accidental escapes of pathogens from laboratories continue to cause outbreaks in the community today, posing significant risks to the general public, animal communities and the environment. These incidents, as well as the uncertainties surrounding the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic, highlight the need to consider unnatural origins as part of emerging outbreak surveillance and detection. Identifying recurring patterns and distinctive factors of laboratory-associated disease outbreaks can aid in successfully preventing and mitigating these occurrences. Seventy incidents of laboratory-associate
