During the winter seasons of 2003 and 2004, a total of 282 nasopharyngeal aspirates (NPAs) were obtained from infants and young children admitted to the Buraidah Maternity and Pediatric Hospital, Al-Qassim, Saudi Arabia, and clinically diagnosed as suffering from acute lower respiratory tract infections. NPAs were screened for the presence of respiratory viruses and further confirmed for the presence of influenza, parainfluenza, and adenovirus using direct fluorescein-labeled monoclonal antibody assay. Of all the 282 specimens, 44 (15.6 per cent) were found positive for influenza, parainfluenz

There are few comprehensive epidemiological studies of pneumonia in the developed world. Ascertainment and definition are important variables in the estimation of pneumonia incidence both in primary care and from hospital data. The available figures suggest a burden of disease in the order of 10-15 cases/1000 children per year and a hospital admission rate of 1-4/1000 per year. Both incidence and hospital admission are greatest in the youngest children and rapidly fall after the age of 5 years. In a majority of cases of community acquired pneumonia an organism is not identified. Viral infectio

BACKGROUND: With use of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and a centrifugation-enhanced viral culture method, we characterized the viruses causing acute respiratory infection in adults during an influenza season.
METHODS: During January-March 2002, nasopharyngeal wash specimens from previously healthy adults presenting with respiratory symptoms were evaluated for viral pathogens with centrifugation-enhanced viral culture and PCR.
RESULTS: The diagnoses in 266 cases included unspecified upper respiratory infection (in 142 [54%] of the cases), acute bronchitis (42 [16%]), sinusitis (23 [9%]), ph

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies of febrile children who were 3 to 36 months of age and had clinically recognizable viral syndromes have shown low rates of concurrent bacteremia. We sought to determine the prevalence of serious bacterial infections (SBIs) among children with influenza A, a viral syndrome that can be established definitively by specific tests.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective cross-sectional study of patients who were 0 to 36 months of age and presented with fever to the emergency department (ED) over 4 consecutive influenza seasons. Chest radiographs and urine and cerebrospin

INTRODUCTION: Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) was recently discovered in children with acute respiratory tract infection. We have studied the occurrence of hMPV and report clinical findings of 50 hMPV-infected children who were hospitalized during an outbreak in Norway.
METHODS AND POPULATION: During 5 months from November 15, 2002 to April 14, 2003 we collected nasopharyngeal aspirate specimens from 236 children admitted because of respiratory tract infection (RTI). Samples were analyzed for influenza virus A/B, parainfluenza viruses 1, 2 and 3 and respiratory syncytial virus by direct immunofl

On September 11, 2001, the Connecticut Department of Public Health (CDPH) initiated daily, statewide syndromic surveillance based on unscheduled hospital admissions (HASS). The system's objectives were to monitor for outbreaks caused by Category A biologic agents and evaluate limits in space and time of identified outbreaks. Thirty-two acute-care hospitals were required to report their previous day's unscheduled admissions for 11 syndromes (pneumonia, hemoptysis, respiratory distress, acute neurologic illness, nontraumatic paralysis, sepsis and nontraumatic shock, fever with rash, fever of unk

OBJECTIVE: Influenza virus is the most common cause of Acute Respiratory Infections (ARI) world wide. In patients with chronic condition, infection by the influenza virus can cause complications such as pneumonia which may have fatal outcome. The aim of this work was to determine the frequency of human influenza virus in outpatients with influenza-like illness (ILI) and in those patients admitted to hospital with community acquired pneumonia (CAP) in Yucatan, Mexico (October 1998-July 1999).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Throat swabs were collected from ILI and CAP patients and processed to detect r

We experienced 142 cases with community-acquired pneumonia between April 1998 and March 2000. By measuring the titers of respiratory viruses for these cases, we were able to identify acute phase infections of influenza A virus in 10 cases and RS virus in 6 cases and determined that there was an increase in community-acquired pneumonia during both winter seasons. Thereafter we compared the clinical features of community-acquired pneumonia with regard to these two types of virus infection by dividing the patients into two groups, both of which frequently included in the elderly. In the influenza

BACKGROUND: Acute lower respiratory tract illness in previously well adults is usually labelled as acute bronchitis and treated with antibiotics without establishing the aetiology. Viral infection is thought to be the cause in most cases. We have investigated the incidence, aetiology, and outcome of this condition.
METHODS: Previously well adults from a stable suburban population consulting over one year with a lower respiratory tract illness were studied. For the first six months detailed investigations identified predetermined direct and indirect markers of infection. Evidence of infection

To investigate what viruses are related to acute bacterial respiratory tract infections, we prospectively evaluated 113 cases with respiratory tract infections (always accompanying by purulent sputum) experienced between July 1998 and March 2000. Acute viral infections were detected in 25 cases (22%); 10 cases of influenza A virus and 6 cases of respiratory syncytial (RS) virus. The epidemiology of the influenza A virus and RS virus was mainly identified as from December to February in both winter seasons. A bacteriological examination of sputum cultures isolated 12 cases of Streptococcus pneu
