Avian influenza (AI) is a highly contagious zoonotic disease primarily affecting birds with clinical manifestation depending on bird species and virus subtype. Globally, outbreaks have had a large socioeconomic impact. Moreover, highly pathogenic AI virus (HPAIv) outbreaks can pose a public health risk. Detection of AIv, particularly HPAIv, mainly relies on passive surveillance, risking underreporting and delayed detection. This study describes and compares the contribution of passive and active surveillance components on HPAI detection in poultry flocks in years with different HPAIv introduct

While clinical trials have illuminated both the virological and clinical efficacy of baloxavir for influenza and post-treatment viral resistance, these aspects warrant further study in real-world settings. In response, we executed a prospective, observational study of the Japanese 2022-2023 influenza season. A cohort of 73 A(H3N2)-diagnosed outpatients-36 treated with baloxavir, 20 with oseltamivir, and 17 with other neuraminidase inhibitors (NAIs)-were analyzed. Viral samples were collected before and after administering an antiviral on days 1, 5, and 10, respectively. Cultured viruses were a

The Department of Defense Global Respiratory Pathogen Surveillance Program conducts continuous surveillance for influenza, severe acute respiratory syndrome 2 (SARS-CoV-2), and other respiratory pathogens at 104 sentinel sites across the globe. These sites submitted 65,475 respiratory specimens for clinical diagnostic testing during the 2021-2022 surveillance season. The predominant influenza strain was influenza A(H3N2) (n=777), of which 99.9% of strains were in clade 3C.2a1b.2a2. A total of 21,466 SARSCoV-2-positive specimens were identified, and 12,225 of the associated viruses were success

PROBLEM/CONDITION: Dengue is the most prevalent mosquitoborne viral illness worldwide and is endemic in Puerto Rico. Dengue's clinical spectrum can range from mild, undifferentiated febrile illness to hemorrhagic manifestations, shock, multiorgan failure, and death in severe cases. The disease presentation is nonspecific; therefore, various other illnesses (e.g., arboviral and respiratory pathogens) can cause similar clinical symptoms. Enhanced surveillance is necessary to determine disease prevalence, to characterize the epidemiology of severe disease, and to evaluate diagnostic and treatment

The molecular mechanisms underlying the clinical manifestations of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), and what distinguishes them from common seasonal influenza virus and other lung injury states such as acute respiratory distress syndrome, remain poorly understood. To address these challenges, we combine transcriptional profiling of 646 clinical nasopharyngeal swabs and 39 patient autopsy tissues to define body-wide transcriptome changes in response to COVID-19. We then match these data with spatial protein and expression profiling across 357 tissue sections from 16 representative patient l

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends case definitions for influenza surveillance that are also used in public health research, although their performance has not been assessed in many risk groups, including pregnant women in whom influenza may manifest differently. We evaluated the performance of symptom-based definitions to detect influenza in a cohort of pregnant women in India, Peru, and Thailand.
METHODS: In 2017 and 2018, we contacted 11 277 pregnant women twice weekly during the influenza season to identify illnesses with new or worsened cough, runny nose, sore thr

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) manifests symptoms as common etiologies of respiratory tract infections (RTIs). During the pandemic of COVID-19, identifying the etiologies correctly from patients with RTI symptoms was crucial in not only disease control but preventing healthcare system from collapsing. By applying sensitive PCR-based molecular assays, we detected the etiologic agents and delineated the epidemiologic picture of RTIs in the early phase of COVID-19 pandemic.
METHODS: From December 2019 to February 2020, we screened patients presented with RTIs using multiplex PCR

BACKGROUND: Influenza C virus has been largely neglected, compared to influenza A orB viruses, and is not routinely tested in clinical practices. However, several studies have indicated that influenza C virus causes severe acute respiratory illness and pneumonia in all ages.
OBJECTIVE: We conducted a study to identify influenza C virus among young children in South Korea.
STUDY DESIGN: From October 2013 to September 2016, 973 young children with influenzalike illness (ILI) were enrolled at three university hospitals. We tested nasopharyngeal samples for 16 types of respiratory viruses. Among

BACKGROUND: Since the Influenza A pandemic in 1819, the association between the influenza virus and Streptococcus pneumoniae has been well described in literature. While a leading role has been so far attributed solely to Influenza A as the primary infective pathogen, Influenza B is generally considered to be less pathogenic with little impact on morbidity and mortality of otherwise healthy adults. This report documents the severe synergistic pathogenesis of Influenza B infection and bacterial pneumonia in previously healthy persons not belonging to a special risk population and outlines thera
