Report of the National Influenza Surveillance Scheme, 2022-2023.

This report describes influenza surveillance activities in Australia in 2022 to 2023. Data were extracted from several sources constituting the National Influenza Surveillance Scheme. Following the relaxation of public health and social measures which had been applied in Australia in response to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in 2020 and 2021, the influenza seasons in 2022 and 2023 were characterised by high activity overall, with 1.4 and 1.8 times the number of laboratory-confirmed influenza notifications than those of the 2015-2019 pre-pandemic five-year mean, respectively.

Clinical characteristics and exploratory outcome associations among patients hospitalized with acute febrile illness during a post-flood period: a multicenter cohort study from Vietnam.

Flooding can disrupt sanitation, contaminate water sources, and alter patterns of infectious disease; however, causal attribution of an individual febrile illness episode to flood exposure is difficult in retrospective hospital-based data. This study described hospitalized patients with acute febrile illness during a post-flood period in northern Vietnam, exploring associations with adverse short-term outcomes. This multicenter retrospective observational cohort included 237 consecutive patients admitted in Thai Nguyen province from October to November 2025. Demographic, documented environment

[Autumn vaccinations for older adults: Influenza, Covid-19 and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)].

Today, the Federal Commission on Vaccination (EKIF) recommends two vaccinations for people aged 65 and over in the autumn: one against flu and one against Covid-19. The new RSV vaccines are recommended for people aged 75 and over and for people aged 60-74 with relevant underlying conditions, but basic health insurance does not yet cover the costs. These vaccines each reduce the risk of illness and hospitalisation to varying degrees, and the risk of serious side effects is very low. The flu vaccine reduces the risk of heart attack, at least in terms of secondary prevention. However, the high Nu

A retrospective study of respiratory infections in children following the COVID-19 pandemic in Wuhan, China.

INTRODUCTION: Acute respiratory infections cause over 4 million deaths annually worldwide, half of which occur in children under 5 years, primarily in developing countries. This study investigated the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of pediatric patients with respiratory infections. METHODOLOGY: This study retrospectively analyzed 8,815 pediatric cases (0-18 years) with laboratory-confirmed respiratory infections at Wuhan Children's Hospital in pre-pandemic (November 2019-February 2020) and post-pandemic (November

Vaccination as a Strategy for Cardiovascular Prevention: Closing a Gap in Clinical Practice.

Prevention of the consequences of atherosclerotic disease has traditionally focused on controlling individual risk factors such as dyslipidaemia, hypertension and diabetes. In recent years, the term residual risk has been used to describe the persistence of cardiovascular events despite the optimal management of these classical risk factors, with particular attention given to inflammation. Far less attention, however, has been paid to environmental risk factors, which affect entire populations and may account for a substantial proportion of temporal variations in event incidence, as well as th

CD73 controls neutrophil responsiveness to type I interferon impairing antibacterial responses during secondary pneumococcal pneumonia.

Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) are asymptomatic colonizers of the nasopharynx but can progress to pulmonary and systemic pathogens upon influenza A virus (IAV) infection. Polymorphonuclear cells (PMNs) are key for controlling S. pneumoniae , but their antibacterial function is impaired by IAV. Using a mouse model that allows transition of pneumococci from colonizers to disease-causing pathogens upon IAV co-infection, we examined the signaling pathways impairing PMN responses. We found that type I interferons (IFN) produced upon IAV infection drives impairment of PMN antibacterial resp

[Vaccination against respiratory infections in older adults: Covid-19, respiratory syncytial virus, influenza and pneumococcus].

Population aging increases the risk of severe respiratory infections and their complications in older adults, largely because of immunosenescence. Beyond pneumonia, these infections can lead to cardiac and respiratory decompensation, acute cardiovascular events, loss of functional independence, and institutionalization. Vaccination remains the cornerstone of prevention. This review provides an update on four vaccine-preventable respiratory infections that are particularly common or severe in older adults: coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection, seasona

Lemierre Syndrome After Influenza A Virus Infection.

Lemierre syndrome is a rare condition characterized by septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein with metastatic septic emboli, most commonly affecting the lungs. We report a case of Lemierre syndrome temporally associated with influenza A infection in a previously healthy 21-year-old male. The patient initially presented to the emergency department with severe headache and tested positive for influenza A. Over the following seven days, his symptoms progressed to neck pain with decreased range of motion, hemoptysis, cough, and persistent myalgias. Despite four additional emergency d

Detection of Aspergillus in the lower respiratory tract and its association with mortality in patients with different viral pneumonias: a retrospective multicenter cohort study from China.

BACKGROUND: The detection of Aspergillus in the lower respiratory tract complicates the clinical course of viral pneumonia and is linked to poor outcomes, but prior evidence is confined to the intensive care unit (ICU) or single-virus settings (e.g., influenza or SARS-CoV-2). Whether its frequency and prognostic significance differ across viral etiologies in hospitalized adults remains unknown. METHODS: This multicenter retrospective cohort study included adults with community-acquired viral pneumonia at seven tertiary hospitals in China (2017-2025). Patients were categorized into SARS-CoV-2,

Emerging respiratory infectious diseases: Clinical aspects for rapid identification and management.

Emerging respiratory infectious diseases increasingly arise at the human-animal-environment interface and challenge clinicians with rapidly evolving diagnostic, therapeutic, and infection-control decisions. This narrative review summarizes clinically relevant viral and bacterial pathogens that may present as severe respiratory disease, but are easily mistaken for common community-acquired infections during early illness. We focus on zoonotic influenza A viruses, including contemporary H5N1, Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV), hantaviruses, Nipah virus, and inhalational bac

Pathogen-Specific PET Imaging of Pulmonary Infection Using [18F]Fluoromannitol.

Pneumonia remains a leading cause of global morbidity and mortality, with diagnostic uncertainty frequently complicating clinical management, particularly in patients with chronic lung disease, immunocompromise, or healthcare-associated infections. Conventional imaging modalities and microbiologic testing lack specificity for distinguishing bacterial pneumonia from viral infection, sterile inflammation, or noninfectious lung disease, often resulting in empiric antibiotic overuse and delayed alternative therapies. In this study, we evaluated [18F]-fluoromannitol, a pathogen-specific Positron Em

Viral triggers of Guillain-Barré syndrome: implications for laboratory diagnostics.

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a leading cause of acquired acute neuromuscular paralysis and is an immune-mediated disorder of the peripheral nervous system (PNS). Accumulating evidence indi-cates that GBS is often preceded by infectious events that trigger autoimmune responses through mechanisms such as molecular mimicry and autoantibody production. Campylobacter jejuni remains the most common bacterial agent, but viral pathogens also contribute to the development of GBS. This review summarizes the current evidence regarding viruses as triggers of GBS, including herpes-viruses, hepatotropic

Duration and severity of asthma-like episodes in young children vary by viral and bacterial triggers.

BACKGROUND: Asthma-like episodes with cough, wheeze and/or breathlessness are frequent in young children and often triggered by respiratory tract infections. We aimed to examine whether specific microbial triggers of asthma-like episodes were associated with episode duration and severity. METHODS: We analyzed 453 nasopharyngeal aspirates collected during acute asthma-like episodes from 268 children aged 0-3 years from the COPSAC-2010 cohort. Samples were tested for common pathogenic respiratory viruses by PCR and for bacteria by culture. Asthma-like episodes were prospectively recorded in dia

Cycles of Susceptibility: Immunity Debt Explains Altered Infectious Disease Dynamics Post-Pandemic.

The concept of immunity debt is a phenomenon resulting from the suppression of endemic pathogens during the COVID-19 pandemic due to non-pharmaceutical interventions. The reduced circulation of various pathogens during the pandemic, particularly respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), altered typical infectious disease dynamics by reducing levels of population immunity usually acquired through exposure to infection. This concept is demonstrated through the post-pandemic resurgence of diseases such as RSV and group A Streptococcus, and highlights the interplay between reduced pathogen exposure and i
