Children's understanding of COVID-19 and the flu in three demographically distinct U.S. communities.

Children's understanding of illness reflects their developing views of the biological world and predicts the protective measures they engage in. However, most of the research to date has focused on children from the communities surrounding research universities and as such might not provide a generalizable view of how children across the United States think about illnesses and viruses. This is of particular concern with regard to the COVID-19 pandemic, as Black and Latinx communities experienced more hospitalizations and deaths, and rural conservative communities were the targets of misinforma

Bridging spatial scales in respiratory viral infection.

Respiratory viruses spread within the host through a combination of local expansion and occasional long-range dissemination that seeds new infection foci. We present LEAP (Lotka-Euler Airway Pathogen model), an analytically tractable within-host model that captures this two-scale process. The model takes the form of an age-dependent branching process and yields a closed-form expression for the exponential growth rate during early infection. Using empirical data to parameterize the model, we find that productive dissemination requires only a small number of successful long-range seeding events

The socioeconomic value of adult respiratory vaccination in Australia: a benefit-cost analysis.

BACKGROUND: Pneumococcal disease, respiratory syncytial virus, influenza and COVID-19 cause a major burden of illness and death among adults, much of which is vaccine-preventable. We estimated the societal value of adult vaccination against these four pathogens in Australia. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We developed disease-specific static life table cohort models and conducted a societal-perspective benefit-cost analysis of adult respiratory vaccination, approximating those recommended by the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunization, relative to no vaccination. Mortality risk redu

Nationwide survey of testing practices for respiratory viruses in Australia in the post COVID-19 pandemic era.

BACKGROUND: In the wake of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, there have been dramatic changes in the testing protocols for respiratory illness. Laboratory identification of respiratory pathogens causing clinical symptoms has become more important in the post-COVID-19 era, both for epidemiological and clinical reasons. This is particularly the case for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) where a number of preventatives are at the point of clinical translation. The laboratory diagnosis is one of the critical elements in understanding the disease burden of respiratory pathogens and

RSV, influenza, and COVID-19 in hospitalized children: A comparative analysis of the 2025/2026 epidemic season in Poland.

Comparative data on the epidemiology and clinical impact of RSV, influenza, and SARS-CoV-2 infections among hospitalized children during the same epidemic season remain limited in Central Europe. This multicenter retrospective study compared the epidemiological characteristics, clinical presentations, and outcomes of laboratory-confirmed respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), influenza, and COVID-19 among hospitalized children in Poland during. A total of 756 patients were evaluated, including 408 with influenza (54.0%), 204 with COVID-19 (27.0%), and 144 with RSV (19.0%). The infections displayed

Disseminated BCG disease and recurrent pulmonary infections in a child with trisomy 21 carrying a novel BACH2 variant of uncertain significance: a 5-year case report.

BACKGROUND: Trisomy 21 is associated with combined immune dysregulation, including lymphopenia, impaired responses to vaccines, and heightened susceptibility to respiratory infections, driven in part by triplication of chromosome 21-encoded interferon receptor genes. BACH2 haploinsufficiency is a rare monogenic immunodeficiency characterized by lymphopenia, hypogammaglobulinemia, and susceptibility to infections and autoimmune diseases. Co-occurrence of these two conditions has not been previously described. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 5-year longitudinal course in a Kenyan girl with triso

[Specific respiratory tract infections in acute cough-when is targeted diagnosis and treatment required?].

In most cases, acute cough is caused by a self-limiting respiratory infection. However, symptoms, pre-existing conditions, or environmental factors may indicate a cause requiring treatment; red flags point to dangerous courses, the NEWS2 score can assess the risk of septic deterioration, and the CRB-65 score supports decision-making regarding hospital admission in pneumonia. Pneumonia cannot be reliably diagnosed clinically but is unlikely in the absence of clinical indicators. Laboratory tests can support the decision for antibiotic treatment, while the diagnosis is confirmed by chest X‑ray.

Influenza A (H1N1) virus infection complicated by checkpoint inhibitor pneumonitis: A case report.

RATIONALE: Checkpoint inhibitor pneumonitis (CIP) is a common, potentially severe adverse event in cancer patients receiving neoadjuvant immunotherapy, with glucocorticoids as the standard first-line treatment. Traditionally, glucocorticoids are avoided in confirmed viral pneumonia because they may delay viral clearance and increase secondary infection risk. No standardized strategy is available for managing concurrent CIP and viral pneumonia, and inappropriate treatment can lead to irreversible clinical deterioration. PATIENT CONCERNS: Following neoadjuvant immunotherapy, the patient develop

RSV Molecular Epidemiology Pre- and Post-COVID-19 Pandemic Periods in Seattle, Washington, USA.

BACKGROUND: Globally, RSV declined to historically low levels following stay-at-home orders in 2020 and re-emerged as restrictions lifted, with large inter-seasonal outbreaks and other shifts in epidemiology. The effect of the pandemic restrictions on genomic diversity has not been well studied. METHODS: Individuals with respiratory symptoms were enrolled into community-based surveillance studies and provided nasal swabs over three respiratory virus seasons from 2019 to 2022 in the Seattle metropolitan area in Washington State, USA. Samples were tested for RSV by RT-qPCR, with whole genome se

Evaluation of pre-Omicron population immunity for SARS-CoV-2 in the Household Influenza Vaccine Evaluation (HIVE) cohort.

BACKGROUND: Continued serosurvey for SARS-CoV-2 population immunity is critical for vaccine strain selection and identification of susceptible groups such as young children. We aim to evaluate the use of a high-throughput, low-volume assay to describe strain-specific IgG measurement in a longitudinally followed community based cohort. METHODS: The longitudinal Household Influenza Vaccine Evaluation study has observed around 300 households annually for acute respiratory illness. SARS-CoV-2 variant-specific IgG (including original, Delta, Beta, and Omicron variants) concentrations were measured

Viral Respiratory Infections: Upper and Lower Respiratory Tract Infections.

Respiratory infections are a major health concern and are divided into upper and lower respiratory tract infections. Upper respiratory tract infections are mostly viral and self-limiting; billions of cases occur globally each year. Lower respiratory tract infections such as pneumonia and bronchitis can cause significant illness, especially in children, older adults, and individuals with comorbidities or immunocompromise. In 2021, lower respiratory tract infections caused more than 2 million deaths globally, mainly in low- and middle-income countries. Preventive measures include hand hygiene, m

Viral Respiratory Infections: COVID-19.

On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic. By late 2024, COVID-19 had become endemic, with regional surges caused by new variants and declining population immunity. Case fatality rates have decreased because of vaccination and the emergence of less virulent variants, but long COVID persists as a public health concern. Because of structural issues, including those related to employment, housing, health care access, and mistrust, minority and low-income individuals are at higher risk for COVID-19 infection and mortality. Preventive strategies include shared de

Report of the National Influenza Surveillance Scheme, 2022-2023.

This report describes influenza surveillance activities in Australia in 2022 to 2023. Data were extracted from several sources constituting the National Influenza Surveillance Scheme. Following the relaxation of public health and social measures which had been applied in Australia in response to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in 2020 and 2021, the influenza seasons in 2022 and 2023 were characterised by high activity overall, with 1.4 and 1.8 times the number of laboratory-confirmed influenza notifications than those of the 2015-2019 pre-pandemic five-year mean, respectively.
