Interference with intraepithelial TNF-α signaling inhibits CD8(+) T-cell-mediated lung injury in influenza infection.

CD8(+) T-cell-mediated pulmonary immunopathology in respiratory virus infection is mediated in large part by antigen-specific TNF-α expression by antiviral effector T cells, which results in epithelial chemokine expression and inflammatory infiltration of the lung. To further define the signaling events leading to lung epithelial chemokine production in response to CD8(+) T-cell antigen recognition, we expressed the adenoviral 14.7K protein, a putative inhibitor of TNF-α signaling, in the distal lung epithelium, and analyzed the functional consequences. Distal airway epithelial expression of 1

[Two adult cases of influenza A/H1N1v virus pneumonia hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit of the Reims University Medical Centre].

During the 2009-2010 winter season, the new pandemic influenza A/H1N1 virus (S-OIV) was responsible for 1,334 hospitalized severe infection cases including 312 (23.4%) deaths in metropolitan France. In the Champagne-Ardenne area (north eastern) this new epidemic strain was detected in the respiratory samples of 14 severe S-OIV infection cases resulting in 5 deaths. Here we report two of these 14 cases who were suffering from a bilateral pneumonia related to S-OIV infection and who were hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Reims University Medical Centre during December 2009. Bronchoscopic findings in a child with pandemic novel H1N1 influenza A and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

The spectrum of disease with pandemic novel H1N1 influenza A (2009) virus ranges from non-febrile, mild upper respiratory tract infection to severe or fatal pneumonia. We report the bronchoscopic findings associated with a fatal case of H1N1 influenza A associated with co-infection with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in a previously healthy child, which were more severe than those previously described as associated with seasonal influenza infection alone. The severity of the airway pathology seen on bronchoscopy in this patient may be due to a unique effect of the H1N1 infl

Influenza A inhibits Th17-mediated host defense against bacterial pneumonia in mice.

Staphylococcus aureus is a significant cause of hospital and community acquired pneumonia and causes secondary infection after influenza A. Recently, patients with hyper-IgE syndrome, who often present with S. aureus infections of the lung and skin, were found to have mutations in STAT3, required for Th17 immunity, suggesting a potential critical role for Th17 cells in S. aureus pneumonia. Indeed, IL-17R(-/-) and IL-22(-/-) mice displayed impaired bacterial clearance of S. aureus compared with that of wild-type mice. Mice challenged with influenza A PR/8/34 H1N1 and subsequently with S. aureus

CT onset of influenza A (H1N1) complicated with severe pneumonia in two typical cases.

The novel influenza A (H1N1) virus developed in the United States and Mexico in April 2009 and has spread worldwide rapidly. Pulmonary complications are major reason of death associated with influenza A (H1N1) infection. Thus, it is necessary to investigate characteristics on the turnover of A (H1N1) infection complicated with pneumonia. Although the chest radiographic findings of the influenza A (H1N1) pneumonia were described in a clinical report, the CT findings involving turnover of influenza A (H1N1) complicated with severe pneumonia have not yet been reported. We report two typical cases
