Sequential Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia and Chromobacterium violaceum skin abscess in a pediatric patient.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a common atypical respiratory pathogen causing community-acquired pneumonia in children. Co-infection with other respiratory viruses is common in pediatric patients but super-infection with bacteria other than Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae is rare. The first case of Chromobacterium violaceum infection incubated during and manifested after pneumonia caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae in a 12-month old girl without any known history of immunodeficiency is here reported. The patient developed fever with redness and swelling over the middle phalanx of th

Development of reverse transcription recombinase polymerase amplification assay for avian influenza H5N1 HA gene detection.

The 2006 outbreaks of H5N1 avian influenza in Egypt interrupted poultry production and caused staggering economic damage. In addition, H5N1 avian influenza viruses represent a significant threat to public health. Therefore, the rapid detection of H5 viruses is very important in order to control the disease. In this study, a qualitative reverse transcription recombinase polymerase amplification (RT-RPA) assay for the detection of hemagglutinin gene of H5 subtype influenza viruses was developed. The results were compared to the real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR).

Interspecies transmission of canine influenza virus H5N2 to cats and chickens by close contact with experimentally infected dogs.

The novel H5N2 influenza virus, CA/SD/JT01/09, was isolated from the dog exhibiting respiratory signs in China in 2009. Dog to dog transmission of the novel H5N2 was previously confirmed. But interspecies transmission of the virus between dogs and the other animals has still remained unclear. To determine whether the virus can be transmitted directly from dogs to cats and chickens, we conducted contact exposure experiments. Susceptible cats and chickens were housed in the room which the novel H5N2 infected dogs were housed in, respectively. As a result, only one cat showed clear manifestations

Detecting specific infections in children through host responses: a paradigm shift.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: There is a need for improved diagnosis and for optimal classification of patients with infectious diseases. An alternative approach to the pathogen-detection strategy is based on a comprehensive analysis of the host response to the infection. This review focuses on the value of transcriptome analyses of blood leukocytes for the diagnosis and management of patients with infectious diseases. RECENT FINDINGS: Initial studies showed that RNA from blood leukocytes of children with acute viral and bacterial infections carried pathogen-specific transcriptional signatures. Subseque

[Phylogenetic analysis and genotyping of A/H3N2 Influenza viruses isolated from patients hospitalised with influenza-like illness symptoms in the na bulovce hospital in the season 2011/2012].

Influenza A virus is an important cause of acute respiratory infections (ARI). Clinical manifestations of ARI vary from mild or moderate to life-threatening conditions requiring intensive care. Given the segmented genome, a large natural reservoir of other influenza virus subtypes, and antibody selection pressure in the population, the virus is variable and genetically unstable. The phylogenetic analysis and genotyping of A/H3N2 influenza viruses isolated from patients hospitalised with influenza-like illness symptoms in the Na Bulovce Hospital in the season 2011/2012 support the assumption th
