Temperature-sensitive mutants of influenza A virus: response of children to the influenza A/Hong Kong/68-ts-1(E) (H3N2) and influenza A/Udorn/72-ts-1(E) (H3N2) candidate vaccine viruses and significance of immunity to neuraminidase antigen.

One of two slightly different influenza A/ts-1[E] recombinant candidate live vaccines was given intranasally to each of 23 young children. Twelve of 15 children who had no serum HI antibody but who did have serum ANAB at the time of administration became infected and 1 had mild rhinitis. All eight who lacked both types of antibody became infected and they shed virus in higher titer and for longer than the former group; five had rhinorrhea and five had mild fever. These findings suggest that serum ANAB plays a part in modulating influenza virus infection and that the full expression of virulenc

Temperature-sensitive mutants of influenza A virus. XII. Safety, antigenicity, transmissibility, and efficacy of influenza A/Udorn/72-ts-1[E] recombinant viruses in human adults.

The influenza A/Hong Kong/68-ts-1[E] virus (shutoff temperature, 38 C), which possesses many characteristics desirable in a vaccine virus, was used as a donor of its two temperature-sensitive (ts) lesions to the antigenically divergent influenza A/Udorn/72 wild-type virus. Two subsets of Udorn/72-ts-1[E] recombinant viruses were evaluated in seronegative volunteers (serum titer of hemagglutination-inhibiting antibody, less than or equal 1:8). The first subset, represented by clone 13, possessed a shutoff temperature of 39 C and only one of the two ts lesions; this virus was insufficiently atte

Hydrocephalus due to prenatal infection with the lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus.

The results are presented of serological examinations in a total of 4235 subjects including blood donors (341 persons), pregnant women (1784), newborns (833), patients with malignant tumours (248), patients with influenza-like diseases (548), patients with abacterial meningitis (295), infants under one year with hydrocephalus (40), infants under two years with other nervous system diseases (110), mothers of seropositive children with hydrocephalus (12) and mothers of seronegative children with hydrocephalus (24). The investigations revealed 16 cases of serologically confirmed prenatal lymphocy

An outbreak of severe pneumonia due to respiratory syncytial virus in isolated Arctic populations.

A rapidly developing outbreak of pneumonia in young infants was documented in two isolated Artic populations in May 1972. These were studied virologically, serologically and clinically. In addition to the two stricken communities, one apparently unaffected with serious clinical illness and a fourth, in which are located the major hospital and airport in the eastern Arctic, were also studied. One hundred and twenty-four patients were studied serologically and 81 respiratory and other specimens were obtained for virus isolation from 40 of these patients. Clinical records were kept of the outbrea

[Characteristics of experimental para-influenza in Syrian hamsters infected by different routes].

The pathomorphological and virological study of peculiar features of parainfluenza infection caused by intranasal, aerosol and oral administration of the virus was carried out. The most marked lesions in the respiratory tract were observed in hamsters infected by the intranasal route, whereas with other routes of infection the intensity of lesions was minimal. Such differences in the pathomorphological manifestations of the process are most probably due to uneven distribution of the virus in the respiratory organs and to peculiar features of the immunological response of the animals.

QUALITATIVE DIFFERENCES IN THE ANTIGENIC COMPOSITION OF INFLUENZA A VIRUS STRAINS.

A study of the PR8, Christie, Talmey, W.S., and swine strains of influenza A virus by means of antibody absorption tests revealed the following findings: 1. Serum antibody could be specifically absorbed with allantoic fluid containing influenza virus or, more effectively, with concentrated suspensions of virus obtained from allantoic fluid by high-speed centrifugation or by the red cell adsorption and elution technique. Normal allantoic fluid, or the centrifugalized sediment therefrom, failed to absorb antibodies. Influenza B virus (Lee) caused no detectable absorption of antibody from antiser
