Clinical epidemiology of adenovirus pneumonia among Chinese hospitalized children.

Adenovirus pneumonia is a prevalent form of community-acquired pneumonia among children. Research on the epidemiology and economic burden of this disease is crucial for public health, yet comprehensive data remains scarce, making it crucial to highlight on this topic. In this study, the data were extracted from the face sheet of discharge medical records collected from 26 tertiary children's hospitals from January 2016 to December 2021. In total, 1854 children with laboratory-confirmed adenovirus pneumonia were hospitalized, accounting for 0.13% of the total number of hospitalized for pneumoni

Screening and verification of differentially expressed serum proteins in children with severe adenovirus pneumonia.

BACKGROUND: Human adenoviruses are prevalent pathogens that cause severe acute respiratory infections. The clinical presentation of the adenoviral pneumonia is varied; in severe cases, they may cause systemic multi-system damages. Currently, early clinical differential diagnosis is difficult under the existing testing methods, the study identified potential biomarkers by screening and validating differentially expressed proteins (DEPs), and aimed at distinguishing between severe and non-severe adenovirus pneumonia in children aged <14 years. METHODS: DEPs were identified using data-independen

Effused and Confused: A Case of Severe Adenovirus Pneumonia in a Teen.

Adenovirus is a common pathogen responsible for respiratory infections, including pneumonia, predominantly in pediatric populations but also in immunocompromised adults. This case report details an 18-year-old immunocompetent male presenting with severe lobar pneumonia and pleural effusion, initially suggesting a bacterial origin. Despite antibiotic treatment, the patient's symptoms persisted, prompting further investigation. The diagnostic approach included polymerase chain reaction testing on upper-airway specimens, pleural effusion, and bronchoalveolar lavage, which identified adenovirus as

Unusual presentation of alveolar capillary dysplasia with misalignment of the pulmonary veins in a child with respiratory syncytial virus pneumonia: A case report.

Alveolar capillary dysplasia with misalignment of the pulmonary veins (ACDMPV) is a rare congenital diffuse lung disorder, with a fatal course during the neonatal period. We describe an 18-month-old boy who presented with respiratory syncytial virus pneumonia and pulmonary hypertensive crisis requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. Exome sequencing revealed a FOXF1 frameshift variant, NM_001451.2:c.995_998delACTC, inherited from his asymptomatic mother. Genetic findings were compatible with histopathology findings from a lung biopsy. Based on the disease course, histopathology, and outc

Multi-omics analysis reveals underlying host responses in pediatric respiratory syncytial virus pneumonia.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is an important pathogen causing pneumonia in children. Few studies have used multi-omics data to investigate the pathogenies of RSV pneumonia. Here, metabolomics was first used to identify potential biomarkers for RSV diagnosis. In the training cohort, serum from 36 healthy controls (HCs), 45 RSV pneumonia children, and 32 infectious disease controls (IDCs) were recruited. After analyses, six metabolites had potential diagnostic value. Using an independent cohort of 49 subjects, two biomarkers (neuromedin N and histidyl-proline diketopiperazine) were validate

Comparison of thrombotic and clinical outcomes in SARS-CoV-2-pneumonia versus other viral pneumonia in an urban academic medical center.

BACKGROUND: Infection with viral pneumonia (PNA) is known to offset the coagulation cascade. Recent studies assessing novel SARS-CoV-2 infection observed a high frequency of systemic thrombotic events resulting in ambiguity if severity of infection or specific viral strain drive thrombosis and worsen clinical outcomes. Furthermore, limited data exists addressing SARS-CoV-2 in underrepresented patient populations. OBJECTIVES: Assess clinical outcomes events and death in patients diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia compared to patients with other types of viral pneumonia. METHODS: Retrospectiv

Point-of-care ultrasound use in COVID-19: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic that began in early 2020 resulted in significant mortality from respiratory tract infections. Existing imaging modalities such as chest X-ray (CXR) lacks sensitivity in its diagnosis while computed tomography (CT) scan carries risks of radiation and contamination. Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) has the advantage of bedside testing with higher diagnostic accuracy. We aim to describe the various applications of POCUS for patients with suspected severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection in th

A nomogram for predicting severe adenovirus pneumonia in children.

Adenoviral pneumonia in children was an epidemic that greatly impacted children's health in China in 2019. Currently, no simple or systematic scale has been introduced for the early identification and diagnosis of adenoviral pneumonia. The early recognition scale of pediatric severe adenovirus pneumonia was established based on an analysis of the children's community-acquired pneumonia clinical cohort. This study analyzed the clinical data of 132 children with adenoviral pneumonia who were admitted to the Children's Hospital of Nanjing Medical University. The clinical parameters and imaging fe
