Epidemiology and Characteristics of Respiratory Syncytial Virus Pneumonia in Critically Ill Adults.

BACKGROUND: Severe respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)-associated pneumonia in adults has rarely been addressed. We investigated the burden and clinical characteristics of severe RSV-associated pneumonia in critically ill adult patients. METHODS: We analyzed a prospective cohort of 2865 adults with severe pneumonia who were admitted to the intensive care unit in a 2700-bed tertiary care hospital from 2010 to 2019. The epidemiology, characteristics, and outcomes of 92 cases of severe RSV-associated pneumonia and 163 cases of severe influenza virus (IFV)-associated pneumonia were compared. RESUL

Efficacy and safety of interferon on neonates with respiratory syncytial virus pneumonia.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) pneumonia is a leading cause of hospitalization and mortality among neonates worldwide, and there are currently no specific clinical treatments for RSV infection. Interferons (IFNs) possess broad-spectrum antiviral properties, and the present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of IFN-α1b for the treatment of neonatal RSV pneumonia. Neonates with RSV pneumonia were divided into the treatment (126 neonates) and control (160 neonates) groups, the former of which were treated with IFN. Aside from IFN administration, both groups received the same routi

Anti-SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing monoclonal antibodies: clinical pipeline.

Monoclonal antibody (mAb) therapy has been previously exploited for viral infections, such as respiratory syncytial virus pneumonia and Ebolavirus disease. In the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, early signals of efficacy from convalescent plasma therapy have encouraged research and development of anti-SARS-CoV-2 mAbs. While many candidates are in preclinical development, we focus here on anti-SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing mAbs (or mAb cocktails) that represent the late-stage clinical pipeline, i.e., those currently in Phase 2 or Phase 3 clinical trials. We describe the structure, mechanism of action, and

High-resolution lipidomics reveals dysregulation of lipid metabolism in respiratory syncytial virus pneumonia mice.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a leading viral pathogen responsible for lower respiratory tract infections, particularly in children under five years worldwide, often resulting in hospitalization. At present, the molecular-level interactions between RSV and its host and the underlying mechanisms of RSV-induced inflammation are poorly understood. Herein, we describe an untargeted high-resolution lipidomics platform based on UHPLC-Q-Exactive-MS to assess the lipid alterations of lung tissues and plasma from a mouse model of RSV pneumonia. Untargeted lipidomics using LC-MS with multivariate

Microorganisms associated with respiratory syncytial virus pneumonia in the adult population.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) has been recognized as responsible for severe respiratory illness in adults, especially in the elderly. While pneumonia is commonly observed during RSV infection, the burden and epidemiology of bacterial superinfection is poorly understood. The aim of this study was to identify microorganisms associated with RSV-positive pneumonia in adults. A retrospective study was conducted during three consecutive winters (October to April 2013-2016) in the University Hospital of Lyon, France. During RSV circulation periods, a systematic RSV screening was performed by reve
