West Nile virus (WNV) is one of the most widespread arboviruses globally and is maintained primarily through a bird-mosquito-bird transmission cycle, while other vertebrates play more limited roles. Host contributions to transmission depend on both infection evidence in natural populations (reflecting exposure and susceptibility) and reservoir competence, determined by the magnitude and duration of viraemia sufficient to infect mosquitoes. Despite extensive surveillance and experimental research, no comprehensive, standardised resource has integrated evidence on host exposure and infection in

Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV) is an emergent arbovirus of major epidemic concern. Associated with periodic outbreaks in Central and South America, VEEV has a high morbidity rate in humans due to a 1:1 clinical-to-subclinical ratio and can cause neurological disease in up to 14% of cases. Concerningly, no FDA-approved vaccines or therapeutics for VEEV exist. Molnupiravir, an isopropyl ester prodrug of β-D-N4-hydroxycytidine, has previously showcased notable antiviral activity against VEEV in vitro and in rodents. While molnupiravir emergency use authorization has been granted for

Arboviruses such as dengue virus (DENV), chikungunya virus (CHIKV), Zika virus (ZIKV), and Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) circulate between mosquito vectors and vertebrate hosts, with non-human primates (NHPs) playing an important role in sylvatic transmission cycles. In Malaysia, frequent interactions between long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis) and humans at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) Bangi campus provide an opportunity to investigate arbovirus exposure at the human-wildlife interface. Forty free-ranging macaques were sampled from five locations within the UKM Bangi ca

West Nile virus (WNV) and Usutu virus (USUV) are mainly avian mosquito-borne pathogens, increasingly cause human and equine disease in temperate regions. Mostly asymptomatic, current surveillance in France is reactive, based on clinical and veterinary reports, delaying signals for vector control and preventative interventions. We implemented in Southern France, in 2024 and 2025, a proactive surveillance methodology combining molecular xenomonitoring of mosquito excreta and environmental water detection of viral RNA in wetlands and mosquito larval habitat, through a multiplex reverse transcript

INTRODUCTION: Orthoflaviviruses are emerging in Europe and have potential significant impact on animal and public health. Usutu virus (USUV) and West Nile virus (WNV) have been first detected in the Netherlands in 2016 and 2020, respectively. Wild boars (Sus scrofa) have been suggested as an interesting population to detect the circulation of orthoflaviviruses. We aim to provide epidemiological insights of USUV and WNV infections in wild boars in the Netherlands. We further explore the interpretation of serological results, taking into account cross-reactivity patterns.
METHODS: A total of 15

OBJECTIVE: West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne pathogen of growing public health concern that is endemic in Israel and has been responsible for intermittent outbreaks. The seroprevalence and durability of functional antibody responses in asymptomatic WNV-infected populations remain unclear.
METHODS: We screened a large cohort of asymptomatic healthcare workers (HCWs) for WNV IgG and neutralizing antibody titers. Predictors of seropositivity and neutralization levels were assessed using multivariable regression. Among seropositive individuals, longitudinal samples, collected up to 44 mon

OBJECTIVES: In 2022, Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) was detected in humans and animals across mainland Australia. We examined the prevalence of JEV and endemic flaviviruses, Murray Valley encephalitis virus (MVEV) and Kunjin virus (KUNV) antibodies in blood donors in different risk geographic areas across southern Australia.
DESIGN: Prospective cross-sectional serosurvey for JEV, MVEV and KUNV-specific antibodies.
SETTING: Southern Australia.
PARTICIPANTS: All Australian blood donors who attended nine high-risk (geographical proximity to recent human, animal and/or vector detections of J

This summary report on vaccine preventable diseases in Australia is the latest in a series of multi-year surveillance reports that bring together the three most important national sources of routinely-collected data on VPDs (notifications, hospitalisations and deaths) and serve as a resource to support surveillance and control of VPDs in Australia. This report focuses on the four-year period 1 January 2019 to 31 December 2022 with longer term trends also presented. Two VPDs are included for the first time: coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) infection.

West Nile virus (WNV) is an emerging/re-emerging flavivirus representing one of the major global causes of mosquito-borne encephalitis, yet no approved therapeutics or vaccines currently exist. To characterize the kinetics of WNV-specific immunity, we evaluated the humoral response in a longitudinal cohort of 55 WNV lineage 1-infected blood donors up to 1 year. We demonstrate that WNV infection elicits robust and durable binding and neutralizing antibodies. Using a biphasic decay model, we estimated the half-life of neutralizing antibodies to be 37 days during the rapid decay phase and 472 day

BACKGROUND: West Nile virus (WNV) is an emerging pathogen in Europe with an unprecedented northward expansion. In Romania, the virus has been endemic for at least three decades, and human infection cases are registered yearly, sometimes culminating in outbreak events. Bucharest, the capital city of Romania, is the largest urban area of the country, encompasses a multitude of mosquito and bird habitats, and has been continuously reported as an active hotspot for WNV transmission. The circulation of lineage 2 has been documented in Bucharest since 2010 in mosquito and human populations. Our stud

Several animal species, including horses and pigs, can be infected with Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV). Feral pigs (Sus scrofa) are considered an effective amplifying host for JEV in natural habitats. In this study, 265 dried blood spots were collected from feral pigs in four selected North Queensland local government areas, and antibodies against JEV were detected using a competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (cELISA). The results showed that 26.4% (70/265) of the feral pigs had antibodies specific to JEV. We found a significant difference in the seroprevalence of JEV in the Wet Tr

West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus of global public health importance, maintained in an enzootic cycle between birds and mosquitoes, with humans and other mammals as incidental hosts. Although WNV has been documented in Kenya, surveillance remains inconsistent, geographically fragmented, and largely dependent on serological methods. This limits understanding of circulating lineages, vector diversity, and transmission dynamics, particularly in coastal regions. This study aimed to address these gaps through systematic arboviral surveillance of mosquito populations across four e

Soon after the appearance of West Nile virus (WNV) in North America, a number of public health authorities designated the American Crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos) a sentinel for WNV detection. Although preliminary studies have suggested a positive association between American Crow mortality and increased risk of WNV infection in humans, we still know little about dynamic variation in American Crow mortality, both baseline levels and mortality associated with WNV. We hypothesized that the complex social behavior of American Crows, which is shaped by age and seasonal factors, influences both baseli

BACKGROUND: West Nile virus (WNV) is a growing threat to public health and a greater understanding of the immune response raised against WNV is important for the development of prophylactic and therapeutic strategies.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In a reverse-immunology approach, we used bioinformatics methods to predict WNV-specific CD8(+) T cell epitopes and selected a set of peptides that constitutes maximum coverage of 20 fully-sequenced WNV strains. We then tested these putative epitopes for cellular reactivity in a cohort of WNV-infected patients. We identified 26 new CD8(+) T cell e

PURPOSE: This retrospective analysis aimed to assess the therapeutic efficacy and adverse event profile of tislelizumab combined with lenvatinib in patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (uHCC), predominantly of hepatitis B virus (HBV) etiology. While this combination has shown promise in clinical trials, real-world data in HBV-endemic populations remain sparse.
METHODS: A total of 163 uHCC patients who initiated first-line systemic therapy with tislelizumab and lenvatinib between January 2021 and February 2025 were retrospectively analyzed. Treatment response was evaluated accor

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the effectiveness of a novel laboratory testing protocol for dummy head biomechanics of the shoulder-head and subsequent head-ground impacts during rugby tackles. Currently, no research in tackles utilizes a real player as the tackler and considers the second impact when the opponent's head hits the ground.
METHODS: A dummy was instrumented with an inertial measurement unit (IMU; 1,200 Hz) behind the right ear. Eleven rugby players with a shoulder placed IMU executed right shoulder high tackles to the left side of the dummy's head at tw

BACKGROUND: Pleural effusion is a common postoperative complication following pancreatic surgery. It is associated with hypoxemia, often requiring prolonged mechanical ventilation and contributing to adverse clinical outcomes. Identifying risk factors and developing predictive models in critically ill patients after pancreatic surgery may facilitate early recognition and guide timely interventions to improve prognosis.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 518 intensive care unit (ICU)-admitted patients who underwent pancreatic surgery at Peking University People's Hospital from January 2016 t

La Crosse virus is a rare infection in humans that can cause encephalopathy and neuroinvasive disease following infection. While pediatric outcomes have been studied, long-term neuropsychological and functional outcomes in adults remain undocumented. This case report compares existing literature with the extended clinical course of a 19-year-old, young adult male Marine recruit who contracted LACV. The Marine presented with lethargy, altered mental status, and abnormal neuroimaging. After improvements in alertness and command following, he was transferred from acute care to an inpatient neuror
