BACKGROUND: La Crosse virus (LACV), a member of family Peribunyaviridae, genus Orthobunyavirus, is the leading cause of neuroinvasive arboviral infection in children in the United States. Diagnosis relies on detecting specific antibodies (IgG or IgM), a 4-fold titer rise or seroconversion, in patients with compatible presentations. NAAT used for LACV detection has largely been limited to mosquito, animal models or postmortem brain tissue. There is a lack of data on the performance of NAATs in clinical specimens from living patients.
METHODS: Children who had positive arbovirus serology tests

West Nile virus (WNV) is one of the most widespread emerging arboviruses in the world. Recently, Europe has undergone a significant increase in WNV incidence and geographic extension, with two genetic lineages, lineage 1 and lineage 2, actively circulating. In Spain, lineage 1 was first identified in 2007, and subsequently spread through the southwest and central regions of the country. Since 2010, it has affected both horses and humans (mainly in southern Spain), including two large human outbreaks of WNV meningoencephalitis in 2020 and 2024. Lineage 2 was first identified in Catalonia (north

BACKGROUND: West Nile virus (WNV) is primarily transmitted by the bite of Culex mosquitoes, but other mechanisms, such as blood transfusion, have also been described. Since its identification in the Americas in 1999, WNV has circulated consistently in the United States of America (USA); however, although WNV has been detected in humans in South America, no major outbreaks have occurred in more than 20 years. One of the hypotheses to explain this difference is the underdiagnosis of the infection. In Mexico, nine isolated cases have been officially reported since 2003 despite its proximity to th

IMPORTANCE: West Nile virus (WNV), a mosquito-borne orthoflavivirus, represents an increasing public health threat in Europe. In July 2025, WNV lineage 2 (WNV-L2) was associated with the first autochthonous cases ever detected in the metropolitan area around Paris, France; understanding the dispersal dynamics and geographic origin of these emergence events is critical for public health preparedness.
OBJECTIVES: To characterize the spatial and temporal dynamics of WNV circulation in France from 2022 to 2025 and to determine the origin of the virus lineages responsible for the 2025 emergence in

Toxoplasmosis and tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) are endemic in Heilongjiang province, China, posing a significant threat to public health. Although some research has indicated that Toxoplasma gondii infection may suppress the host’s immune response and increase susceptibility to other pathogens, no studies have been conducted to explore the association between these two diseases. From 2020 to 2023, a total of 415 serum samples were collected and tested for both T. gondii and tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) infections using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) by us. The positive rate

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) infection is an arboviral disease transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, typically presenting with fever, rash, and polyarthralgia. Neurological complications such as meningitis are rare and more often seen in neonates and immunocompromised individuals. Hepatic involvement is also uncommon, with only a few reports describing significant hepatitis in the absence of other risk factors. We report the case of a 68-year-old male, previously healthy with no comorbidities, who presented with acute febrile illness followed by severe headache, neck stiffness, and altered sensorium.

The nsP2 protease offers a unique opportunity to develop both narrow- and broad-spectrum direct-acting antiviral drugs against the family of togaviruses, given its critical role in viral replication. In this work, we report the identification of potent, broad-spectrum inhibitors of the nsP2 protease that cover nearly all members of the Togaviridae family and have translational potential, as they selectively block viral replication in cell cultures. The three classes of potent inhibitors have a C5-substituted pyrrole, tetrahydroquinoline, or indole-based scaffold. The lead candidate, BFB78, is

Viral infections have been implicated in psychiatric outcomes through immune-mediated pathways. This 12-month prospective cohort study, designed as a pilot and hypothesis-generating investigation, compared psychiatric symptoms and inflammatory cytokine profiles in patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV), and explored their potential predictive value. Thirty-seven patients hospitalized with viral infections and 32 healthy controls were evaluated, acknowledging the limited sample size. Psychiatr

Reports of acute Jamestown Canyon Virus (JCV) cases have increased markedly over the last 15 years, associated with improved diagnostic testing protocols. Analysis of these cases and the criteria used for their diagnosis could benefit clinicians encountering this under-recognized disease. In the current study, we analyzed all published reports of acute human JCV infections in North America from the first in 1982 through 2022, including retrospective studies. A total of 50 reports with 416 cases of JCV were found. The primary illness associated with JCV infection involved the nervous system. Of

Human cases of West Nile Virus (WNV) infection have been reported since 2010 in Türkiye, with seasonal outbreaks occurring almost annually. Enhanced surveillance has been in place since 2011. The early detection of WNV infection is crucial for obtaining and delivering appropriate samples for accurate diagnosis, initiating proper treatment, conducting contact tracing and ensuring the early detection and control of outbreaks. This study aims to evaluate the increase in WNV cases reported in Türkiye in 2024, following a four-year period with no reported cases. All confirmed cases of WNV in indivi

This paper presents a novel West Nile virus model that has more extensive free boundary conditions and also takes into account the impact of infected mosquitoes on the free boundary, both of which are firsts in West Nile virus modeling. Specifically, the free boundary conditions independent of the dispersal kernel functions in the equations, bring new challenges to the dynamical analysis of spreading-vanishing, especially for the case where the basic reproduction number R 0 ≤ 1 , which involves new ideas and techniques for dynamics analysis. Moreover, due to the consideration of the impact o

Functional gastrointestinal (GI) tract disorders affect a substantial proportion of the global population and are often preceded by intestinal infections that cause injury to enteric neurons and glia through unrestrained immune responses. However, the mechanisms that limit infection-induced inflammation and protect the enteric nervous system remain poorly understood. Here, we defined such neuron-glia-macrophage interactions after West Nile virus (WNV) infection; this model neurotropic virus causes GI tract dysmotility in mice via injury of enteric neurons through a T cell-mediated cytolytic me

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is the most common non-purulent neuroinfection in Central Europe and a major public health concern in the Czech Republic, where vaccination coverage remains low. Even after recovery from the acute disease, many patients experience long-term sequelae known as postencephalitic syndrome (PES). This prospective multicentre study examined predictors of acute disease severity and long-term outcomes, including motor deficits and other forms of PES. A total of 209 patients with laboratory-confirmed TBE were enrolled at four Czech centres in 2023 and 2024; 187 completed si

West Nile virus (WNV) is a pathogen belonging to the family Flaviviridae and the genus Flavivirus. This study examined WNV IgG antibodies in healthy blood donors at Hitit University Blood Centre in Corum, Türkiye, during 2019-2020 using ELISA, thereby providing seroepidemiological data on WNV in northern central Anatolia. It also investigated the associations between ABO (antigens A and B) and Rhesus (D antigen) blood group system and WNV seropositivity. Blood samples from 500 individuals (155 women, 345 men) aged 18 years or older who visited the Blood Transfusion Centre were tested using the

BACKGROUND: Belgium will likely be confronted with the introduction of West Nile virus (WNV) in the near future, as its presence in neighboring countries has been documented, and the high abundance of Culex pipiens, the main vector of this virus, has been documented in Belgium as well. Other mosquito species, such as Anopheles plumbeus, could also play a role in disease transmission. Anopheles plumbeus is a tree hole-breeding species whose habitat is expanding to urban sites, thus increasing its contact with humans. Only limited data are available on the vector competence of this species for a

Jamestown Canyon virus (JCV) is a historically understudied mosquito-borne virus of increasing concern in North America. We generated 658 whole-genome JCV sequences from northeast United States, including 84% (500/597) of all JCV-positive mosquitoes detected in Connecticut from 1997 to 2022. Then, we applied phylodynamic methods to demonstrate how mosquito phenology structures the maintenance and evolution of JCV. Our phylogenetic analyses estimate that JCV was introduced in the Northeast by at least the early 1700s, and the primary introductions of lineages A and B into Connecticut occurred d

Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is primarily transmitted by Ixodes spp. and poses significant health risks, leading to morbidity and mortality in humans. Two of the five subtypes, Siberian and Far Eastern are known to circulate in Mongolia. In 2021, Ixodes persulcatus ticks were collected from Bulgan aimag (province) using flagging and dragging methods and subsequently screened for TBEV using PCR. Positive samples underwent sequencing using an Oxford Nanopore Technologies-based hybrid capture approach, resulting in two coding-complete TBEV genomes from separate tick pools. Phylogenetic an

OBJECTIVES: In 2017, the first autochthonous cases of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) were reported in the region of Saint-Étienne, a forested and mountainous area in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes (AURA), France. We aimed to describe the frequency of TBE among patients in this area with acute and subacute neurological symptoms and to characterize the confirmed TBE cases.
METHODS: We included patients over two years of age with neurological symptoms evolving for up to three months and having undergone cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis between January 1, 2021 and December 31, 2023 at Saint-Étienne Univer
