Pneumonia due to Staphylococcus aureus infection.

Staphylococcus aureus is the second most common infectious agent of pneumonia in the ICU. The virulence of this organism is highlighted by toxins and enzymes that result in severe damage to lung tissue. Clinical features fail to distinguish Staphylococcus aureus pneumonias from other pathogens, and clinical diagnosis has the same limitations that beset other bacterial causes of pneumonia. Effective therapy is dictated by carefully performed susceptibility testing. First-line therapy is with a beta-lactam agent. If BRSA is detected or beta-lactam intolerance occurs, vancomycin should be adminis

Pneumonia due to Staphylococcus aureus in a patient with AIDS: review of incidence and report of an atypical roentgenographic presentation.

Multiple defects in host defense mechanisms produce an increased incidence of community-acquired bacterial pneumonia in individuals infected with the human immunodeficiency virus. Clinical studies suggest that Staphylococcus aureus is an uncommon cause of such infections, though its incidence is increased in the setting of intravenous drug use, indwelling vascular catheter, and coexistent pulmonary Kaposi's sarcoma or pneumonia due to Pneumocystis carinii. The significantly higher incidence of S aureus pneumonia documented in autopsy series suggests that the infection frequently remains undiag

Community-acquired pneumonia due to Staphylococcus cohnii in an HIV-infected patient: case report and review.

Coagulase-negative staphylococci recently have been implicated as a cause of serious infections in immunocompromised individuals. An unusual case of community-acquired pneumonia due to Staphylococcus cohnii in an HIV-infected drug user is described. Results of a study conducted to examine the prevalence of infection due to Staphylococcus cohnii strains and their antibiotic-sensitivity patterns show a low frequency but a high morbidity. These results and a brief review of the literature emphasize the importance of these organisms and other staphylococcal species as emerging opportunistic pathog

Rhabdomyolysis associated with bacteremic pneumonia due to Staphylococcus aureus.

A case of rhabdomyolysis associated with bacteremic pneumonia due to Staphylococcus aureus is reported. A 58-year-old man was admitted because of severe left lobar pneumonia, and presented myoglobinuria on admission. The serum creatine phosphokinase level was transiently elevated and myoglobinuria were disclosed. Sputum and venous blood cultures grew Staphylococcus aureus. Rhabdomyolysis has rarely been reported in cases of bacterial infection, especially those due to Staphylococcus aureus. This case might be an extremely rare case of rhabdomyolysis complicating Staphylococcus aureus bacteremi

Ultrastructure of neutrophilic phagosome of autologous platelet in vivo in specific granule deficiency.

The ultrastructure of neutrophilic phagosomes containing autologous platelets in vivo from a woman with specific granule deficiency is described. This phagosome formation was observed only when she had developed pneumonia due to Staphylococcus aureus. Therefore, the phenomenon might be induced by severe bacterial infection under an abnormal neutrophilic condition accompanied by specific granule deficiency.

[Clinical application of subtraction CT imaging for evaluation of pulmonary vascular permeability].

In this clinical study, one normal subject, one patient with primary interstitial pneumonia, one patient with segmental pneumonia due to Staphylococcus aureus, one patient with post-operative esophageal carcinoma, and two patients with mitral stenosis were studied. Dynamic CT scan images under continuous injection of low osmotic contrast medium were analyzed in series, in an attempt to evaluate vascular permeability quantitatively. The following results were obtained: 1) Subtraction CT scan image 10 minutes after the start of contrast medium injection in two patients with pneumonia, showed a r

Pneumonia due to Staphylococcus aureus during mechanical ventilation.

The incidence of pneumonia due to Staphylococcus aureus in patients treated with mechanical ventilation in an intensive-therapy unit was investigated in a prospective study. Of 295 ventilated patients treated during one year, 17 developed S. aureus pneumonia and 26 developed colonization of lower airways by S. aureus. Neurosurgical patients treated with hyperventilation, sedation, cooling, and steroids had a significantly higher frequency of both S. aureus pneumonia (25.9%) and S. aureus colonization (27.8%) compared with other ventilated patients (1.2% and 4.6%, respectively). The epidemiolog

Optimal antibiotic therapy in bronchopulmonary infections.

Therapy of bronchopulmonary infections has evolved in the past 30 years. Only in the therapy of pneumococcal infections have, precise dosage programs been developed. Therapy of pneumococcal infection is optimal with penicillin G in low dosage. None of the newer agents has altered morbidity or mortality. The best agent for the treatment of pneumonia due to Staphylococcus aureus or members of the Enterobacteriaceae has not been established. Use of combination therapy consisting of an anti-Pseudomonas penicillin and an aminoglycoside has been shown to offer the greatest success in the treatment o
