Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae causes porcine infectious pleuropneumonia in pigs. We aimed to characterize the phenotypic and genomic features of three A. pleuropneumoniae strains from clinical cases in eastern Chinese provinces. The serovar 5 strain ZJNH2023 was more pathogenic than strains AH2020 and ZJXS2022 in a murine model and was resistant to multiple antimicrobials. The core genome SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) tree indicates that the three isolates are clustered with serovars 5, 8, and 15 strains of archived genomes. They harbor plasmids conferring resistance to florfenicol an

OBJECTIVE: Infections caused by carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) have a poor prognosis, particularly in immunocompromised patients. While carbapenemase production is the primary resistance mechanism in carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae (CRKP), other mechanisms may contribute synergistically to carbapenem resistance. Here, we describe a case in which extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing K. pneumoniae, initially susceptible to carbapenems, acquired carbapenem resistance without carbapenemase production following ceftolozane-tazobactam exposure.
METHODS: Whole-genome

The increased deployment of carbapenem antibiotics has led to a rise in carbapenem-resistant Enterobacter (CRE) prevalence. Notably, the incidence of CRE-related infections in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) has surged, presenting significant clinical challenges. This case report emphasizes the treatment of neonatal CRE infections complicated by pneumonia and renal impairment and investigates the safety of tigecycline and polymyxin in pediatric settings. We conducted a retrospective analysis of clinical data from neonates with CRE-related pneumonia and renal impairment treated with a com

Introduction. Klebsiella pneumoniae is an opportunistic pathogen that causes a wide spectrum of infections within healthcare settings and the community. Four K. pneumoniae sub-lineages, defined using core gene multi-locus sequence types, are known to cause distinct infections of the nasal and/or upper respiratory passages: SL91 and SL10031 (also referred to as subspecies ozaenae), SL10032 (subspecies rhinoscleromatis) and SL82. These sub-lineages have also demonstrated reduced carbon source utilization, which, in other species, has been linked with high loads of insertion sequences (ISs).Metho

Microorganisms commonly exist in polymicrobial communities, where they can respond to interspecies secreted molecules by altering behaviors and physiology; however, the underlying mechanisms remain underexplored. Here, we investigated interactions between Stenotrophomonas maltophilia and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, coinfecting opportunistic pathogens found in pneumonia and chronic lung infections, such as in cystic fibrosis. We found that S. maltophilia forms large protective multicellular aggregates upon exposure to P. aeruginosa secreted factors. Experimental evolution for lack of aggregation se

INTRODUCTION: Carbapenem resistance in Klebsiella pneumoniae (Kp) has led to increased use of colistin-based therapy in the intensive care units (ICUs). Lately however, colistin resistance among K. pneumoniae has been widely reported. This study aims to investigate the prevalence, and the potential risk factors associated with colistin resistant K. pneumoniae (ColRKp) in the intensive care unit (ICU).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: All ICU patients, above 18 years of age, with a culture positive blood stream infection were included. A case-control-control design was used. Patients with colistin resis

Hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae is a pathotype capable of causing invasive infections with high morbidity and mortality rates. In this study, we conducted a surveillance analysis of hypervirulent isolates circulating in Mexico to characterize their phenotypic and genomic features. Presumptive hypervirulent isolates were identified at a frequency of 6.48 % (19/293), comprising 17 K. pneumoniae sensu stricto and two K. quasipneumoniae subsp. similipneumoniae. Isolates were predominantly recovered from male patients (12/19, 63 %). Clinical samples were obtained from lower respiratory tract (1

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most prevalent bacterial infections worldwide. The emergence of antibiotic resistance increasingly complicates their management. Therefore, this study aims to describe the prevalence and the resistance patterns of uropathogens isolated from patients having UTIs at a tertiary care center in Lebanon. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 39,837 urine cultures tested for UTIs, at a tertiary care center in South Lebanon, from 1st January 2022 to 31st December 2024. Data were collected from patients’ medical records. Urine cultur

The emergence of a high-risk New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase 14-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae sequence type 147 clone is of public health concern because of its rapid international spread. We report cross-border emergence and rapid dissemination of that clone in the Canary Islands, Spain, during 2023-2025. We analyzed 30 isolates recovered during 2023 in detail by reviewing clinical and epidemiologic data, conducting whole-genome sequencing to assess clonal relatedness and analyze resistomes, and performing antimicrobial susceptibility testing of novel therapeutic options through reference bro

In patients with acute respiratory infections (ARIs), routine diagnostic tests often fail to identify the microbial cause; thus, many ARIs have undetermined etiology. We investigated potential involvement of thermotolerant bacteria in ARIs among patients in Hong Kong, China, by incubating blood agar inoculated with respiratory specimens at 50°C for 5 days. Among 7,257 specimens analyzed, 58 specimens from 57 patients grew thermotolerant bacteria not identified by other methods. We identified Tepidimonas spp. in 42 isolates, 3 of which appear to be a novel Tepidimonas species (tentatively Tepid

Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) and Carbapenemase-producing Gram-negative bacteria, particularly Klebsiella pneumoniae (ESBL-KP and CP-KP), in the food supply chain, poses a significant public health threat. Ready to eat (RTE) street foods, especially fuchka, a highly popular snack in Bangladesh, India and Southeast Asia, represents a critical breach in food safety. This study investigated the multidrug resistance (MDR) patterns of K. pneumoniae isolated from fuchka with an emphasis on phenotypic and genotypic detection of ESBL-KP and CP-KP. A total of 60 samples were collected from 15

Klebsiella pneumoniae is an opportunistic Gram-negative pathogen and a common cause of antibiotic-resistant infections including neonatal sepsis and hospital-acquired pneumonia. K. pneumoniae strains can be categorized into two pathotypes: classical K. pneumoniae (cKp), which often causes nosocomial infections, and hypervirulent K. pneumoniae (hvKp), which can cause severe disease in healthy hosts. New therapies are urgently needed for these infections, and caseinolytic proteins have emerged as promising therapeutic targets in other bacterial pathogens. ClpX and ClpP have been implicated in ba

Non-fermenting Gram-negative bacteria pose a considerable challenge in medical settings and are increasingly implicated in infections in these settings. Many are opportunistic pathogens that primarily affect patients with other acute or chronic health conditions. Among them, Delftia species-particularly Delftia acidovorans - have traditionally been regarded as of limited clinical relevance. However, a comprehensive literature review has identified 175 reported cases of Delftia infections, with D. acidovorans accounting the majority cases (87.4 %). Bacteraemia was the most commonly associated c

BACKGROUND: Klebsiella pneumoniae exhibits a marked propensity for acquiring beta-lactam resistance genes. Among these, AmpC beta-lactamases are able to hydrolyze a broad spectrum of antibiotics including first- through third-generation cephalosporins, cephamycins, and aztreonam. The CIT, EBC, and DHA families are among the most clinically significant plasmid-mediated AmpC variants in this pathogen. Consequently, this study aimed to investigate the prevalence of genes encoding these specific enzymes among clinical isolates of K. pneumoniae in northern Iran.
METHODS: One hundred clinical isola

Antimicrobial resistance is a silent pandemic responsible for 1.14 million deaths worldwide in 2021, with a major contribution from Klebsiella pneumoniae. β-lactams are the most commonly used antibiotics in humans, and there is an urgent need to characterize the resistance mechanisms to these antibiotics in Enterobacterales other than Escherichia coli. Mecillinam is a narrow-spectrum β-lactam targeting a single penicillin-binding protein, PBP2. Pivmecillinam, its oral prodrug, is used as a first-line treatment for uncomplicated urinary tract infections. It has been used for decades in Europe b
