The Tick Surveillance Scheme (TSS) is a citizen science initiative which relies on public and professional submissions to monitor tick species distribution, seasonal exposure, and host associations across the United Kingdom (UK). During the period 2021-2024, 3182 tick records were received and 27 tick species were detected. The data confirm that Ixodes ricinus, the primary vector for Lyme disease and Tick-borne encephalitis, remains the most common tick in the UK. The TSS continues to detect imported tick species, underscoring the risk of novel pathogens entering the country, with new species

BACKGROUND: Ticks transmit multiple pathogens, including B. burgdorferi, the agent of Lyme disease, and tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV), which can cause severe neurological disease and death despite frequent pauci- or asymptomatic infections. The Limousin region is considered at risk for TBEV because of dense tick (Ixodes) populations, although no clinical TBE cases have yet been reported there.
METHODS: This study assessed TBEV seroprevalence in 880 patients tested for Lyme disease at Limoges University Hospital between January 2020 and January 2023. Presence of neutralizing antibodies

BACKGROUND: Ticks are important vectors of zoonotic pathogens, posing a growing threat to animals and humans in Europe. In Norway, the tick species Ixodes ricinus is expanding its range, increasing the risk of tick-borne infections. This study aimed to estimate the seroprevalence of IgG antibodies against Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s. l.), tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV), and Anaplasma phagocytophilum in domestic dogs residing in Norway, and to assess their potential role as sentinel species for tick-borne pathogen surveillance at the northernmost limit of I. ricinus' geographical r

BACKGROUND: Ixodes ricinus is the most abundant tick species in Europe and a primary vector for multiple pathogens affecting human and animal health. Over the past 70 years in Europe, including Italy, the geographical distribution of I. ricinus has expanded, increasing the opportunities for tick-human interactions. This observational retrospective study evaluates tick-borne disease (TBD) diagnostic activities conducted from 2015 to 2022 in northeastern Italian hospitals, focusing on areas with significant I. ricinus presence.
METHODS: Data from over 49,000 human samples that underwent serolog

The most common species of tick in Europe is the castor bean tick (Ixodes ricinus), which is found in forests, parks, and gardens and is active almost all year round. Ticks are among the most important arthropods and vectors of disease, transmitting a wide range of parasites that sometimes lead to the death of infected organisms. The peak incidence of tick-borne diseases occurs between May and September; however, due to global warming, people are increasingly exposed to tick-borne diseases throughout the year. In order to increase the possibility of preventing the transmission of diseases by t

BACKGROUND Lyme disease is a tick-borne infection caused by spirochetes of the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato species complex (Bb). Lyme neuroborreliosis occurs in up to 15% of untreated Lyme disease cases and most commonly presents with painful radiculitis, cranial nerve palsy, and meningitis; progression to encephalitis occurs in approximately 3.3% to 9% of cases. Lyme neuroborreliosis can develop despite appropriate antibiotic therapy of early Lyme disease. Diagnosis of Lyme neuroborreliosis is based on a combination of compatible neurological symptoms, serologic evidence of Lyme disease,

Tick-borne pathogens are transmitted by tick bites to cause infectious diseases in humans and domestic animals. To anticipate tick-borne disease occurrence, a high resolution understanding of infection risk distribution and its ecological drivers is needed. We aimed to map the spatial distribution of ticks and pathogen-infected ticks in central Hokkaido, Japan. Adult and nymphal ticks were collected with constant effort at 171 sites from 13 May to 26 June 2024, followed by screening tick-borne pathogens and ecological niche modeling. A total of 9,908 ticks were collected and the endemic tick-b

The black legged tick, Ixodes scapularis, is a vector of the bacterium that causes Lyme disease and several other illnesses, including anaplasmosis, babesiosis, and tick-borne encephalitis. Although high-quality genome annotations are available for I. scapularis, functional understanding of I. scapularis genes is limited. To address this, we developed a platform for genome-wide CRISPR-Cas9 knockout screening in I. scapularis cells. To evaluate the platform, we performed a screen to identify genes associated with cellular fitness, and screens for resistance to treatment with copper chloride, An

In Japan, Lyme disease and tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) are primarily in the northernmost prefecture Hokkaido, where their primary vectors Ixodes ovatus and Ixodes persulcatus are most abundant. Recently, tick surveillance activities have collected both species across Japan, indicating potential expansion of their tick-borne pathogens (TBPs). We built a machine-learning (ML) model using available tick surveillance and environmental data to predict suitable habitat areas for I. ovatus and I. persulcatus and identify potential higher-risk areas of Lyme disease and TBE across Japan. Tick-borne diseases such as Lyme disease, tick-borne encephalitis and Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever in humans, and East Coast Fever and anaplasmosis in animals, pose a significant threat to public and veterinary health. Knowing where tick species are distributed helps with targeted response. In this study, we used Artificial Intelligence (AI) to automate the identification of tick species from images. A Kenya-based tick image dataset comprising of 864 images across seven tick species was compiled from laboratory collections and the Global Biodiversity Information Facility. MobileNetV2 and R

BACKGROUND: Powassan virus (POWV) is a tick-borne, neurotropic arbovirus endemic to Canada and the United States and is transmitted by Ixodes ticks, which also carry Lyme disease. It is an increasingly recognized cause of neuro-invasive infection in humans, for which treatment is supportive. Prognosis in POWV encephalitis is variable, ranging from complete recovery to death. As with other arboviral encephalitides, the mainstay of diagnosis is serological testing. However, molecular diagnostics play an increasingly important role, particularly in the case of immunocompromised hosts.

Powassan virus (POWV) is a rare tick-borne flavivirus that can cause severe neuroinvasive disease with high morbidity and mortality. Early clinical and radiographic features are often nonspecific and may mimic acute ischemic stroke, leading to diagnostic delay. We report the case of a 77-year-old woman with recent tick exposure who presented with acute-onset focal neurologic deficits and fever. Initial neuroimaging demonstrated focal diffusion restriction, raising concern for acute ischemic stroke, and dual antiplatelet therapy was initiated. Over subsequent days, the patient developed progres

Powassan virus (POWV) is a tick-borne Orthoflavivirus transmitted by Ixodes tick species. POWV causes fatal encephalitis in approximately 10-30% of neurological cases, and long-lasting neurological sequelae in approximately 50% of survivors. POWV entry into the central nervous system (CNS) is an important event in determining clinical outcome. In this study, we evaluated viral replication kinetics, neuropathology, as well as host immune response following POWV infection in C57BL/6J (WT) mice. Our data showed that infection with POWV by all inoculation routes, including the intravenous, intrape

Group A Streptococcus (GAS) infections cause neuropsychiatric complications in children, but the mechanisms linking peripheral infection to brain dysfunction remain unclear. Using mouse genetics, single-cell RNA sequencing, and spatial transcriptomics, we show that GAS infections induce inflammatory transcriptional programs in microglia and brain endothelial cells (BECs), accompanied by loss of blood-brain barrier (BBB) gene expression in female mice. Spatial transcriptomic analyses reveal that GAS-responsive microglia localize near infiltrating CD4+ T cells. Several microglial chemokines indu

BACKGROUND: Climate warming is altering the seasonal timing of many ecological interactions. Migratory birds typically time their movements using photoperiodic cues, whereas the activity of ectoparasites such as ticks is largely temperature dependent. This difference in environmental drivers may create climate-induced phenological mismatches that reshape host-parasite interactions.
METHODS: We investigated tick infestation in migratory thrushes during late-autumn migration in Belgium, a period historically assumed to fall largely outside the main activity season of Ixodes ricinus. In addition

INTRODUCTION: The hard tick Ixodes ricinus serves as vector for life-threatening tick-borne diseases (TBDs) such as Lyme borreliosis, relapsing fever, and tick-borne encephalitis. Due to the ticks` ability to adjust to climate changes, their habitat is expanding quickly across Europe, and the incidences of TBD´s are increasing. Therefore, to better understand and control TBDs it is essential to expand the knowledge about the ticks´ microbiome, particularly the spatiotemporal and tissue-specific dynamics of I. ricinus bacterial community. This study was designed to investigate the differences i
