The genetic diversities of mammalian tick-borne flaviviruses are poorly understood. We used next-generation sequencing (NGS) to deep sequence different viruses and strains belonging to this group of flaviviruses, including Central European tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV-Eur), Far Eastern TBEV (TBEV-FE), Langat (LGTV), Powassan (POWV), Deer Tick (DTV), Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFDV), Alkhurma hemorrhagic fever (AHFV), and Omsk hemorrhagic fever (OHFV) viruses. DTV, AHFV, and KFDV had the lowest genetic diversity, while POWV strains LEIV-5530 and LB, OHFV, TBEV-Eur, and TBEV-FE had higher g

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is peculiar due to its unstable dynamics with profound inter-annual fluctuations in case numbers - a phenomenon not well understood to date. Possible reasons - apart from variable human contact with TBE foci - include external factors, e.g. climatic forcing, autonomous oscillations of the disease system itself, or a combined action of both. Spectral analysis of TBE data from six regions of central Europe (CE) revealed that the ostensibly chaotic dynamics can be explained in terms of four superposed (quasi-)periodical oscillations: a quasi-biennial, triennial, pent

In Central European tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) mechanisms of tissue destruction are poorly understood. To evaluate the contribution of immunological mechanisms to tissue injury, the authors immunohistochemically analyzed paraffin-embedded autoptic brain tissue of 26 human TBE cases. In the parenchymal compartment, there was a predominance of macrophages/microglia and cytotoxic T cells. In addition, it was found that granzyme B-expressing lymphocytes were in close contact with TBE-expressing neurons up-regulating caspase-3. These findings indicate that cellular and humoral pathways of the im

Central European tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is caused by a flavivirus vectored by the Ixodes ricinus tick. In severe infections, TBE presents as (myelo)meningoencephalitis with considerable mortality. Characteristic neuropathologic changes feature a multinodular to patchy polioencephalomyelitis accentuated in spinal cord, brainstem, and cerebellum. Visualization of viral infection by immunohistochemistry has not yet been achieved. We analyzed immunohistochemically the distribution of viral antigens and its correlation with neuropathologic changes, serological data, and disease duration in 2

UNLABELLED: The case of an 11-year-old child with acute myopericarditis associated with central European tick-borne encephalitis is presented. Cardiac involvement was demonstrated by pericardial effusion, elevated serum concentration of troponin-I and cardiac arrhythmia. Co-infections with enteroviruses, Borrelia burgdorferi or the agent of human granulocytic ehrlichiosis were excluded. Recovery was uneventful.
CONCLUSION: Central European tick-borne encephalitis can be complicated by cardiac involvement.

BACKGROUND: Central European encephalitis, caused by the tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV), is exceptional in France. Most cases have been described in Alsace. As 2 cases of tick-borne encephalitis were diagnosed in the Nancy region, a seroepidemiological survey was conducted in the Lorraine region (Meurthe & Moselle, Moselle, Vosges, Meuse) in 1996.
METHODS: The survey was proposed to approximately 1,000 persons attending preventive medicine clinics. The subjects were asked to fill out a self-administered questionnaire on factors related to tick bite exposure and underwent TBEV serology t

We report a case of central European tick-borne encephalitis with cervical myelitis presenting clinically as a lower motor neuron syndrome of the upper limbs with proximal asymmetrical pareses and atrophies. There were no sensory deficits nor signs of lesions of the spinal pathways or signs of encephalitis or meningitis. The affected motor fibers of the upper limbs were electrically inexcitable, but sensory findings were normal. Electromyography of the paralyzed muscles revealed pathological denervation activity without voluntary activation. The initial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed

We report a case of Central European tick-borne encephalitis (CETE) in a 54-year-old man, presenting with fever and neurological complications following a holiday in Austria. A disease resembling paralytic poliomyelitis may develop with upper and lower extremity paralysis, as is the case in our patient. Our patient was most likely infected by eating goat's cheese, made of unpasteurised goat's milk. The diagnosis was confirmed by a positive IgM antibody response to the virus in the serum.

Central European tick-borne encephalitis is mainly found in Central European countries and Austria where hundreds of cases are reported each year. Apart from 2 cases diagnosed in Alsace in 1968 and 1970 respectively, this disease was hitherto unknown in France. We report 8 new cases observed in Alsace between 1985 and 1990. Clinical presentation in these 10 patients was a pure meningitis syndrome in 4 cases and meningo-encephalitis in 6 cases, very severe in 3 of them. All patients recovered rapidly, and only 3 have slight sequelae. In a seroprevalence survey conducted in 1989 among 619 profes

Two conserved regions in the sequence of the NS5 gene of Flaviviruses were identified. Primers were designed from the consensus sequence of these regions and were used in a reverse transcription/polymerase chain reaction (RT/PCR) to amplify a region of the central european tick-borne encephalitis virus Kumlinge NS5 gene. The authenticity of the amplified fragment was confirmed by nucleotide sequencing. A band of the expected size was also obtained when this RT/PCR was applied to 13 other flaviviral RNAs. This method may be useful for characterisation of the NS5 genes of flaviviruses and as a p

The etiology of acute encephalitis was evaluated in a retrospective study of 170 children (98 boys and 72 girls) ages 1 month to 15 years, who were hospitalized during a 13-year period from 1979 to 1991. The etiology was confirmed or considered very probable in 68% of cases. The identified etiologic agents included Central European tick-borne encephalitis virus (28.8%), varicella-zoster virus (17.0%), herpes simplex (10.0%), rubella (2.9%), mumps (2.3%), measles virus, Chlamydia psittaci (1.1%) and some other agents found in individual cases. The etiology remained unknown in 54 children (31.7%

Between 1986 and 1991, sera were collected from 33 roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), 24 red deer (Cervus elaphus), four fallow deer (Dama dama), two mouflon (Ovis musimon), 34 wild boars (Sus scrofa), and 48 hares (Lepus europaeus) shot in two areas of the Czech Republic. Collectively, the sera contained antibodies to Coxiella burnetii (prevalence of 12%), Francisella tularensis (4%), Brucella spp. (2%), Central European tick-borne encephalitis virus (8%), Tahyna (California serogroup) virus (36%), and Calovo (= Batai) virus (23%). We propose that these mammals may play a role in maintaining nat

Monoclonal antibodies (MoAbs) to Central European tick-borne encephalitis virus (strain Hypr) were used for differentiation of eight viruses of the TBE complex by indirect immunofluorescence. MoAb 11/B3 (in Western blot recognizing 52 and 70 kD polypeptides) reacted with five out of the eight TBE complex viruses, MoAb 13/E5 (anti-52 kD protein) reacted with the western or eastern subtype of TBE virus only, while MoAb 12/G4 (anti-70 kD protein) distinguished the western subtype of TBE virus from the rest of the TBE complex. These three MoAbs were able to differentiate the virulent strain Hypr f

The main vector of Central European tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), the hard tick Ixodes ricinus, is very common in forests of Berlin (West) all of which are frequently visited nearby recreation areas. While the presence of the causative agent, a flavivirus, has been demonstrated in all districts of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) there has been no corresponding investigation concerning Berlin (West). In the present study, 4593 unengorged I. ricinus nymphs and adults were collected by the flag-dragging method in forest areas of Berlin (West) in 1978, 1979, and 1986 and virologically examin

Diseases caused by flavivirus infection have been a scourge of mankind for over three centuries; with yellow fever, dengue fever and Russian spring-summer encephalitis causing epidemics resulting in thousands of fatalities. Due to the development of a safe and efficacious live-attenuated vaccine against yellow fever, this disease is no longer such a threat in countries where adequate vaccination is practised. A similarly safe and efficacious inactivated vaccine against central-European tick-borne encephalitis has also been developed and this has drastically reduced the incidence of this diseas

Rhesus, patas and vervet monkeys were infected i.c. or i.n. with three viruses of the tick-borne encephalitis complex (TBE) as follows: Turkish tick-borne encephalitis virus (TTE), Louping-ill virus and Central European tick-borne encephalitis virus (CETE). The incidence of overt clinical signs of disease varied according to the virus that was used for the inoculations. TTE proved to be more pathogenic for monkeys than the other two members of the complex, whilst CETE was the least pathogenic. Injections of specific antiserum soon after infection tended to increase both the incidence of clinic

Tick-borne encephalitis is transmitted by the tick ixodes ricinus. After the second world war an increase in the number of cases of encephalitis was observed and the neurotropic virus was isolated for the first time in 1948. Reservoir animals are mouse-like wild animals and also agricultural domestic animals. The infection is transmitted to humans through tick bites. It becomes apparent subjectively in headaches, vomiting, tiredness, giddiness and insomnia, and objectively in meningeal symptoms, extrapyramidal tremor, cerebellar ataxia, vestibular nystagmus and paresis. The treatment consists

From 1969 to 1972 1,080 patients admitted with a diagnosis of viral meningoencephalitis were treated at the Hospital for Infectious Diseases in Prague-Bulovka. In 633 of these patients tick-borne encephalitis could be detected serologically. The epidemiological conditions and the clinical course of the disease are described. Paresis of the extremities and the cranial nerves occurred in 12.8% of the patients; the outcome was fatal in 0.8%. Treatment in hospital usually lasted 3 to 4 weeks and patients were unfit for work for a further 6 to 10 weeks after dismissal.
