Saffold cardiovirus infection in children associated with respiratory disease and its similarity to coxsackievirus infection.

BACKGROUND: Saffold virus (SAFV) is a newly discovered virus belonging to the genus Cardiovirus of the family Picornaviridae. Using molecular techniques, SAFV has been detected, although infrequently, in the stools of both healthy and diarrheic children and in respiratory specimens collected from children with respiratory disease. The epidemiology and pathogenicity of SAFV remain unclear. METHODS: Between July 2009 and October 2010, nasopharyngeal specimens were collected from children with acute respiratory infections. The collected samples were used to isolate respiratory viruses, including

[Consensus conference on acute bronchiolitis (II): epidemiology of acute bronchiolitis. Review of the scientific evidence].

A review of the evidence on epidemiology, risk factors, etiology and clinical-etiological profile of acute bronchiolitis is presented. The frequency estimates are very heterogeneous; in the population under two years the frequency of admission for bronchiolitis is between 1 and 3.5%, primary care consultations between 4 and 20% and emergency visits between 1 and 2%. The frequency of admissions for respiratory infection by respiratory syncytial virus in the risk population is: in premature infants < or =32 weeks of gestation between 4.4 and 18%, in patients with bronchopulmonary dysplasia betwe

High rate of viral identification and coinfections in infants with acute bronchiolitis.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the viruses and risk factors associated with hospital and intensive care unit (ICU) admissions in infants with acute bronchiolitis. INTRODUCTION: Bronchiolitis is a major cause of morbidity in infants. Widespread use of molecular-based methods has yielded new insights about its etiology, but the impact of viral etiologies on early outcomes is still unclear. METHODS: Seventy-seven infants with bronchiolitis who were under two years of age and visited an emergency unit were included. Using molecular-based methods, samples were tested for 12 different respiratory viruse

Molecular characterization of adenoviral infections in Cuba: report of an unusual association of species D adenoviruses with different clinical syndromes.

Adenoviruses are common pathogens that are responsible for a wide variety of infectious syndromes. The objectives of this study were to identify and characterize members of different adenovirus species at the molecular level and to describe the correlation between viruses and clinical syndromes during a period of 4 years. Between 2002 and 2006, 45 of 512 respiratory specimens (8%) from patients with acute respiratory tract infection tested positive for adenovirus. Four adenovirus isolates from samples sent for enterovirus isolation were also analyzed. This research identified 49 confirmed case

Optimisation of RT-PCR for detection of enteroviruses.

Enteroviruses are members of Enterovirus genus of Picornaviridae family. On the basis of their pathogenesis and host range, most human enteroviruses are classified into one of three groups (Coxsackie's viruses, echoviruses and polioviruses). Some unclassified human enteroviruses may cause bronchitis (type 68), acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis (type 70), meningitis and paralysis (types 70 and 71) and hepatitis (type 72 or hepatitis A virus). Enteroviruses can be propagate in primary cultures of human monkey kidney cells and in some cell lines such as HeLa, Vero and WI-38. Virions are small (22-

Association of respiratory picornaviruses with acute bronchiolitis in French infants.

BACKGROUND: Human rhinoviruses and enteroviruses (Picornaviridae) are suspected to be major viral etiological causes of bronchiolitis in infants. OBJECTIVES: In the present study, we assessed the potential role of the respiratory picornaviruses as causative agents of bronchiolitis in French infants. STUDY DESIGN: From September 2001 to June 2002, we prospectively selected 192 infants < or =36 months of age and hospitalized for acute bronchiolitis. The detection of common respiratory viruses (respiratory syncytial virus, influenza virus A and B, parainfluenza virus 1, 2, 3 and adenovirus) was

Persistence of rhinovirus and enterovirus RNA after acute respiratory illness in children.

The persistence of rhinovirus and enterovirus RNAs was studied in the nasal secretions of children with acute expiratory wheezing (median age: 1.7 years). On admission, 84 samples from 161 (52%) children admitted to hospital were positive by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), which detects rhino- and enteroviruses simultaneously. Of the samples, 26 (16%) were positive for rhinovirus, 29 (18%) enterovirus and 29 (18%) nontypable rhino-enterovirus. After 2 weeks, 16 of these 84 (19%) samples were still positive. Rhinovirus RNA remained positive in 13 of 26 (50%) cases, whe

Respiratory picornaviruses and respiratory syncytial virus as causative agents of acute expiratory wheezing in children.

We studied the viral etiology of acute expiratory wheezing (bronchiolitis, acute asthma) in 293 hospitalized children in a 2-year prospective study in Finland. A potential causative viral agent was detected in 88% of the cases. Eleven different viruses were represented. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) (27%), enteroviruses (25%), rhinovirus (24%), and nontypable rhino/enterovirus (16%) were found most frequently. In infants, RSV was found in 54% and respiratory picornaviruses (rhinovirus and enteroviruses) in 42% of the cases. In older children, respiratory picornaviruses dominated (65% of ch

Epidemiological picture of respiratory viral infections in Croatia.

This paper presents the epidemiological study of respiratory viral infections in Croatia from 1 September 1986 till 31 August 1987. A total of 527 patients with acute respiratory diseases were examined. Their nasopharyngeal secretion and/or throat swab were taken and the viruses were demonstrated by the method of direct viral diagnosis (isolation and rapid immunofluorescent detection). This 12-month study on acute respiratory infections in Croatia in 1986/1987 shows that viruses were the agents in 47.2% of these infections. Out of a total of 527 patients with acute respiratory disease, 177 pat

[Significance of viruses of antigen complex of California encephalitis in pathology].

A study was undertaken to examine 320 patients with seasonal fevers occurred in June to September. These included fever of unknown etiology, acute respiratory virus diseases, pneumonias, bronchitis, enterovirus diseases, and serous meningitis. Serological tests revealed that in 20 (6.3%) of them the viruses of the complex in California encephalitis (Tyagin's virus or antigenically related virus) contributed to the etiology of the disease. Major clinical symptoms of the disease were defined in this group of patients. The disease appeared as neuroinfections (serous meningitis), influenza-like co

Respiratory viral infection in childhood. A survey in general practice, Roehampton 1967-1972.

The role of viruses and M. pneumoniae in episodes of acute respiratory illness in childhood has been studied in a London general practice. The total isolation rate was 31-7 per cent, but the rate varied from 32-6 per cent in upper respiratory infections to 64-0 per cent in pneumonia. The clinical features associated with infection were influenced not only by the type of agent but also by age and other host factors in infected children. Rhinoviruses were more commonly isolated than any other agent and were frequently associated with wheezy bronchitis.

A review of routine tests for respiratory viruses in hospital inpatients.

During the period June 1967 to May 1972, viral tests were performed upon 1195 inpatients aged 12 and over in the Brompton Hospital. The overall diagnostic rate was 21-5%, comparing 9-3% by isolation and 14-9% by complement fixation (6-5% by four-fold rises in titre in paired sera, 8-4% by titres larger than or equal to 160 in single sera). Only 42% of all patients had an acute respiratory illness within one week prior to admission, which seriously curtailed the chances of isolating viruses and of obtaining early serological specimens. The value of complement fixation tests on single specimens

Viruses associated with acute respiratory infections 1961-71.

Influenza-like illness, cold and sore throat was the diagnosis given in over 80% of 5177 acute respiratory illnesses in patients swabbed over a 10-year-period. A pathogenic organism was isolated twice as frequently from patients with a sore throat or an influenza-like illness as from those diagnosed as suffering from croup or laryngitis and bronchitis. A laboratory diagnosis was commoner in school children than in older or younger persons. Most of the organisms isolated were found in association with all types of acute respiratory illness but, with increasing age of the patient, one particular
